An Effort to Have the New Metho
dist College Located There.
Mount Vehnon, Os., April 30.—At n
meeting here yesterday for the purpose of
securing to Mount Vernon the South Geor
gia Methodist college, eloquent addresses
were made by Judge H. D. I). Twiggs and
Others. Over |H,OOO was subscribed In cash
by the good people of the town and county,
probably securing the college to this plane.
In point of location and health Mount Ver
non offers the D*t advantages of any town
yet. in the race.

negro got caught in the belt, was thrown
toward the roof, breaking a 2x4 girder in
bi* flight, and going on struck the roof of
the mill, knocking off two of the boards,

They Carry Off Everything at One
Place Except the Mill.

parties last night went to I.avinsky’s mill,
near Verbena, Ala., and carried cIT abso
lutely everything except the mill. The
commissary was valued at several thousand
dollars. The country about Verbena is
infested with a daring band of robbers,
who have in the post few weeks perpetrated
a number of bold robberies.

attorney for the board of control and lady
managers of the world’s fair, Miss Pinrbe
Cousins’ petition for an injunction to re

United States court. The ground for the
removal was that a number of the defend
ants are citizens of other stales than Illinois.

PIITTBURG’a STRIKE.
Tbe Men of the Building Trades Ex
pected to Go Out.
PfTTSBUR'i, Pa., April 30.—The pro
gramme of the long threatened strike is
that the carpenters shall strike to-night for
(2 Vi per day of eight hours. They at press
*nt receive (2 75 for nine hours’ work.
The st me mason* of the city, who are not
now on strike, will;also go out for an eight
hour 'lay nad 45 cents per hour.
The contractors who are members of tbe
builders’ exc! ange have sign'd iron-clad
articles to refuse the demands of the oar
(Tenters, and when the strike occurs to lock
out every carpenter who strike*. They have
agreed to lock out all other branches of the
building trades, because they are ail closely
allied and work under a system of federa
tion.
The marble cutters believe their scale will
t signed. They have agreed to extend the
time until next Monday.

Pittsburg, Pa., April 30, !1 p. m.—This
city is now fairly started in the eight-hour
movement with 5,000 carpenters out, and
the placing of other trades in such a peon

the Michigan car shops is practically over.
Over 300 of the old employes applied for
work this morning, which was immediately
given them. The men continued to come
in by twos and threes, and were immediately
assigned to their various departments.

less men. and by to-niurrotv or Saturday
full operations will be resumed.
