cipal democracy to so alter our
rules as to adopt whatever there may be
i; . the rules of the state democratic com
mittee which will enable them to act in
concert and harmony with the party. We
owe it to the members of the democracy of
Charleston to select the best in our ranks

THE PERMAMENT CHAIRMAN.
B. H. Rutledge. Jr., was then elected
frairmatn of the convention.
On motion of State Senator A. T. Smyth
a committee of twelve, one from each ward,
was appointed to consideoand report what
changes, if any, were neces-ary in the con
mtution of the municipal Democratic
party. This committee after a recess sub
mitted a report, which in effect adopts the
constitution for the city adopted by the
state Democratic party in IS9O. It pro
vides for the election by the convention of
8 E ew executive committee which is to
serve until the meeting of the democratic
convention in the fall. The members of
the committee are to be suggested by the
democratic ward club*. The representation
in the convention is to be basod upon the
membership of the ward clubs
as under the slate Democratio party
constitution. In other words, every con
cession was made to the demands of the
alleged reformers. After electing an execu
tive committee the convention adjourned,
subject to tha call of the oommittee.
ANOTHER CONVENTION.
Another convention, under the auspices of
Ockty Cohen, will be held on Monday next.
At this convention the delegates will be
selected by the democratio ward clubs re
cently organized in the city, and it is
expected that a municipal ticket will be put
out. The regular democracy will not nomi
nate its tipket until the fall.
It should be mentioned that a very con
siderable number of the democrats of
Charleston have enrolled themselves in the
newly organized ward clubs. It is not im
probable that the May convention will be
captured by the regular democrats, better
known as the ringsters. There are in the
city not over 3,500 registered voters, white
and black, democrats and republicans. At
the democratic primaries yesterday nearly
1,300 votes were polled. No report was
made to-night of the number of reformers
who voted at the ward club meetings for
the delegates to the May convention.

A College Orator.
Athens, Ga., April 30.—Sam Tribble of
Athens, a member of the Demostbenian So
ciety, was to-day chosen to represent tbe
University of Georgia lu the southern in
tercollegiate oratorical contest, to occur
this summer in Charlottevile, Va. Mr.
Tribble is a member of the law class, and is
an eloquent and forcible speaker.
Free Passes for Delegates.
Atlanta, Ga., April 30.—The clerk at
the executive office reports that replies have
now been received from all tbe railroads
granting free passes to delegate to tbe
world's fair convention, which meets hero
next Wednesday.
