SHE HAS NO HANDS.

LIVES JNCAUFO NIA.
A Pretty L. ttle Sauc?lito Girl’a F’ucky
etrugaf e Against Lcn? Odds—ier
Are aa Good aa Hands.
From the San Fiancisco Kra niner.
There is a strange little giri over in Sau
eelita She lives in a tiny hcuse among the
green hills, and she's just as happy as the
Jay is long.
She has seven brothers and sisters, has
this strange little girl—four brothers and
three sisters—so silo is never lonely. The
older children go to s:hool, tut t. ere is
always a baby to keep her company.
She never goes to school herself, though
she is nearly 8 years old.
There are a good many reasons why she
stays at home from school.
She could not bold her books very well if
she went, end she hates to think she cannot
tio everything quite us well as any one else.
Besides, the children might tease her for
being so different from the rest, and she
would find out then that she ought to be
uuite unhappy.
For the poor little thing has no arms. She
has never had any.
Her name is Mnryau Marcena, and her
fatner is a tinsmith.
The thing that Maryan most delights in
doing is to help her little brothers and sis
ters get ready for school.
She is very quick and full of life, and she
hurries around at a groat ra’e. She makes
them hurry, too. She washes their faces
and combs their hair, and if they don’t
standstill she knows how to give them a
lively little box on the ear.
How does she do it?
Why, with her feet, of course. She laughs
when people are astonished at that.
Maryan does not believe that hands are
one bit more useful or convenient than feet.
Any one who notices her for awhile is
usually a convert to her way of thinking,
too.
She just takes hold of a towel between hor
toes, and she throws it around her little
brother’s neok by a dexterous twist of her
supple ankle. Then she dips her feet in the
water and she rubs that youngster’s face till
it shines again.
Then she sits back and looks at that
round little red face, just exactly as an
artist looks at his picture to see if be has
achieved the correct effect.
When the face is as new looking and fresh
as a brand new tin pan Maryan gives a
queer little satisfied sigh and patters into
too next room as fast ns she can—that's
pretty fast, too, by the way.
When sho comes out she lias something
between her first two toes. That something
is a comb. She goes up to her brother, and
thou sho sits down.
“Couio here,” she says in Portuguese, or
if it isn't “come here” that she says it is
“come here” that she means, for the little
fellow leans obediontly near her.
Swish: swish! goes the little comb through
the thick black hair of little brother.
Splash! goes the comb in the water. Swish!
again, and there’s a parting. Swish! once
more, und there’s a beautiful parting.
‘There, now,”she says, cheerily; that is,
if she doesn’t say “there, now,” she means
it. Surely she means it. And so the little
brother knows, for he rises hastily and pro
ceeds in a business manner to follow the
fashion of boykind and get rumply and
dirty-faced as soon as he conveniently can.
She can sew a littie, too, can this wonder
ful child, and she likes to do it. It is a curi
ous sight to see her thread a needle. She
does it in this w y: Sho take.s the needle in
one foot and the thread in the other. She
twists that thread and roils it to make the
end stiff mid pointed, and then she balances
herself in some marvelous way, and, presto!
her needle is threaded.
She can hold her knife and fork in her
toes, and she does it. How in the world she
manages to feed herself is a mystery. But
she does feed herself, and very easily, too, if
one judges from her appearanco.
She bold a pencil between her intelligent
little toes and scribbles away finely.
She grasps the handle of a duster in her
firm, flexible clutches, rind, my, how she
can make the du->t fly. She can pick up a
piu, or anything else, for that matter, quite
as well as people who are blessed with ten
pickers and stealers. Sho almost talks with
these delicate toes, and they almost seem
endowed with a separate iutolligeuco of
their own—an intelligence ns quick and
nervous as that of the brain itself.
She is a sweat-faced child, with a pair of
great blue eyes that look exactly like big
violets. They are nevor sa.i, though, those
big violet eyes. She’s a light-hearted little
creature, and she apparently’ has not the
faintest idea that her lot is sad. Her younger
brothers are very fond of her, but she knows
what is good for them, and she is a strict
disciplinarian.
She ban a good many tilings to make her
happy, she thinks. There’s tho bay, for ex
ample. The bay is always laughing and
dancing in the sun or sulking in the shade.
It is very amusing to see how it changes its
moods whenever the sun is behind a cloud.
Maryan thinks it is never dull when there
is the water to watch. From her tiny
house she can see the big ships sail past, and
she can sae tne queer little three-cornered
sails of the fishermen’s boats when they
bend and seem to touch the rough
waters. Sometimes she is frightened and
gasps tor breath when the sails go too far
over, but usually she loves to see
them. After the first rains in the
spring the steep hill where she lives is
carpeted with vivid green grass. When
the second rain comes tho green carpet is
sprinkled with hundreds of gay flowers.
Then tho strango littlo creature is happier
than ever, for she knows how to make ail
sorts of pretty chains and wreaths out of
the wild blossoms, and she loves to run
about iu the sunshine and feel the soft grass
under her slender toes.
Her quiet little face is sensitive and deli
cate. She is shy, not with tba consciousness
of her misfortune, but with the diffldenco
of a country child.
Some San Francisco people had a little
chat with her the other day. The San
Francisco people did all the talking, but
Maryan’s fare was so bright and her shining
eyes were so pleasant that they scarcely
realized that she had not spoken one word
until they went away.
When the visitors went out tho gate a
•oft, high-pitched voice called after them.
“Good-by,” said the voice. It was
Maryan wno spoke, standing iu the door
and looking after them. It was the first
hughsh word she had spoken. As tho car
riage lolled down hill the visitors heard
Maryan laughing with her brothors. She
w a.s evidently much amused that the visit
ors were so much surprised when she
showed them how she could sow with her
toes, She didn’t seo anything surprising
about it—not at all.
She seemed to think it was rather stupid
and a matter of course herself.
.She lives quietly in her home and sees
rery few strangers. Her parents are poor
people, but they are very proud of their
houseful of healthy, handsome, black-eyed
youngsters. They are very proud of their
uttle armless girl, and she is of one the hap*
Piest, merriest children in Saucelito.

Let’s reason together.
Here's a firm, one of the
largest the world over; it
has grown, step by step,
through the years to great
ness— and it sells patent
medicines !—ugh !
“ That's enough ! ”
Wait a little—
This firm pays the news
papers good money (expen
sive work, this advertising!)
to tell the people that they
have faith in what they sell,
so much faith that if they
can’t benefit or cure they
don’t want your money.
Their guarantee is not in
definite and relative, but
definite and absolute —if the
medicine doesn't help, your
money is “on call?
Suppose every sick man
and every feeble woman
tried these medicines and
found them worthless, who’d
be the loser, you or they ?
The medicines are Dr.
Pierce’s “ Golden Medical
Discovery,” for blood dis
eases, and his “ Favorite
Prescription,” for woman’s
peculiar ills. If they help
toward health, they cost Si
a bottle each! If they
don’t, they cost nothing /
