GUYTON'S WEEK’3 HAPPENINGS.
Society’s Doingfa at the Pretty Little
Village In ESlngiiam.
Progressive euchre is one of the favorite
amusements for Guytonians just now.
During the week a euchre party was given
by the Misses Armstrong complimentary
to Mrs. Juliau Rogers of Macon, who is
visiting the family of B. R. Armstrong.
Miss Annie Rawls was the champion end
Me winner of the first prize. The booby
was awarded to Miss Mamie Arden.
Avery pre tty wedding occurred in Guy
ton Tuesday afternoon, by which the town
loses a very worthy young lady. Miss Eva
Bird married Mr. George Beach of Savan
nah. at the residence of her brother, Mr.
Walter Bird. The ceremony was performed
by Rev. J. E. Wray, pastor of the Guyton
Methodist church, and the happy couple left
for Savannah, their future home.
Dr. VY. S. Simmons, one of Guyton’s ris
ing young dentists, has returned from the
convection of the State Dental Association,
which was at Ht. Simon's Island. Dr.
Simmons is having a handsome office fitted
up in the second story of the Baynard build
ing.
T'rof. R. E. Cobb and bis brother spent
Monday night in Guyton. This is Prof.
Cobb’s first visit as instructor for the Guy
ton silver cornet band, recently re-organ
ized. The boys are preparing to give an
entertainment in the early part of June to
raise funds witb which to defray the ex
penses of the instructor.
During a rece.it thunder-storm at Guy
ton the residence formerly owned and oc
cupied by W. B. Mal'ett, on Springfield
road, was struck by lightning and the roof
and one of the corners of tne house where
the current descended were badly torn up.
Fortunately no one was occupying the
house at tue time.
The summer residenters and visitors are
beginning to seek their suburban homes.
Me-ar*. E. U and W. C. Neidllnger have
arrived nDd now occupy their handsome
summer residence.
The Lanier house, under charge of Mrs.
Victoria Jeukin*. has been put in order for
the reception of her numerous summer vis
itors.
The resort will doubtless be well patrou
ized, as it is a home to be commended to
those who ai e seeking a quiet, home-like
place to spend the heated term.
The Cubbedge house, run by Mrs. Van-
Tassel, is located near, the depot, where
the visitors have all the oomforts of home.
Tho Guyton Glees, assisted bv their gen
tlemen and lady friends, will give an enter
tainment at Guyton Hall next week. The
Glees have deliguted Guytonians before.
The action of the Southern Press Associa
tion in inaugurating a movement looking
to the erection of a monument to the late
President Davis will meet with a hearty re
sponse from the citizens of Guyton. Mayor
Sweat will, doubtless, call a meeting of the
people at the proper time.
Wednesday night the anniversary cele
bration of the Methodist Hunday school
took place at the church ill Guyton, and
was in every respect oharming and enter
taining. The church was orowded from the
altar to the door with one of the most de
lighted audiences seen in the ohurch for a
long time.
The church and altar deooratiors were
very handsome and most profuse. Tho
children of the Sunday school were
neatly attired in white dresses.
They formed in twos at the parsonage,
and, accompanied by their teachers,
marched in aud up the aisle sieging “Bring
ing iti the Sheaves.” Shortly after 8 o’clock
the presentation of banners and sheaves
took place. A Scripture lesson was read|by
Rev. J. E. Wray, the pastor. The address
of welcome was delivered by Master Robert
Lovett. The song “Onward, Upward,’’ was
sung by the sohool. The recitation, “Lit
tle Hands,” by the infaut class, charmed the
andience. Alter a song, “Bring Them In,”
little Cliffie Mell reoited "Sowing and
Reaping.” This recitation was given
with ease, grace end perfect naturalness.
The recitations and floral offerings by a bevy
of little misses was an interesting feature of
the celebration. Miss Laurie Blackshear,
daughter of Mr. James E. Blackshear, de
lighted the audience with a recitation,
“Watching.” Supt. A. E. Bird made a very
gratifying report, showing the year’s work.
Prof. Bird has been superintendent for sev
eral years, and is a very enthusiastic Sun
dav-school worker.
ftev. J. E. Wrav made|a short addres’, full
of appreciation of the work of the school
and the success attending its efforts. After
the rendering of a few songs “Good-by”
was sung by the school. This celebration is
conceded to be one of the best ever given by
the sohool.
Avery pleasant sociable was given Fri
day night by Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Davant,
Jr., complimentary to Miss Susie Adams of
Savannah, who is visiting them.
Rev. Jacob Austin of Ebonezer Lutheran
church,with his daughter, visited Savannah
last week.
Conductor Jordan of the llaloyondalo
aoooinmodation and his force have made
their appearance in handsome new uni
forms. It is said that “Uncle Mike” for
the first time donned it on the occasion of
the entertainment at Halcyondale last week
and was highly complimented by the ladies
for his youthful aud soldierly appearance
The Sunday schools of Effingham will
have their annual celebration at Spring
field Wednesday, June 3. Rev. T. H. Blenus,
of the Christian church of Savannah, has
been invited to deliver the address.

High-Priced Meats Sold After Becom
ing- Damaged by Long Keeping.
Inspector Desvergers or the Citizens’ San
itary Association, in his report of inspec
tions of food produce in the Savannah mar
ket for the week ending last night, says that
dressed beef and dressed mutton showed
’ nie improi ement in quality over the pre
ceding we >k. Dressed pork showed no im
provement.
There was a considerable quantity of
beef and mutton in the cold stor
age houses, but buyer3 were deterred by
the high prices asked for it, and it was held
until the latter part of the week, when some
of it was put upon the market deteriorated
m condition. In the meantime a number
of droveß of Georgia and Florida cattle and
*“®®P catne iu, aud the market at the close
of the week was well supplied with do
mestic beef and mutton.
The inspector reports poultry, both
dressed aud alive, plentiful ana of good
quality. Spring chickens were particularly
good. Tho coops brought into the market
house are not looked after, the inspector
B ays, as they should be. Several poultry
venders persist in eartiling or dusting the
Boors of the ooops, evidently for the pur
po of effecting concealment of the condi
tion of fowls which have suffered
from long transportion and con
finement or impure food. From coops so
ousted, fowls when fluttering In the grasp
of the vender fan out from them an im
palpable powder which floats, freighted
n ’ith minute insects and disease germs
about the air of the market house and
lodges upon dressed meats and other food.
The inspector reports pickled beef and
tripe averaging good; sausages and meat
Puddings were inferior.
Green vegetables and such fruits as ba
nanas, oranges and pineapples ware good
aud plentiful; strawberries, blackberries
and plums were fair.
Fish, shrimp, prawn, crabs and clams were
good and plentiful.

Those who believe that
Dr. Sage’s Catarrh Remedy
will cure them are more
liable to get well than
those who don’t.
If you happen to be one
of those who don’t believe,
there’s a matter of SSOO to
help your faith. It’s for you
if the makers of Dr. Sage’s
Remedy can’t cure you, no
matter how bad or of how
long standing your catarrh
in the head may be.
The makers are known to
every newspaper publisher
and every druggist in the
land, and you can easily
ascertain that their word’s
as good as their bond.
Begin right. The first
stage is to purify the sys
tem. You don’t want to
build on a wrong founda
tion, when you’re building
for health. Don’t shock the
stomach with harsh treat
ment. Use milder means.
You wind your watch
once a day. Your liver and
bowels should act as regu
larly. If they do not, use
a key. The fay is Dr.
Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets.
