MERCER UNIVERSITY.
The Resignation of the Ola Members
of the Faculty.
Macon. Ga., July 6. —Editor Morning
yews: Without being fully posted os to
tba facts and merits of the matters at issue,
a portion of the press of the state, in their
comments upon the recent resignation of all
the old professors of Meroer University,
may perhaps have created some prejudice
against them.
This would be extremely unfortunate and
a great wrong to these worthy gentlemen.
Nothing definite has transpired in the prem
iss*, aud until final action has been taken
by the board of trustees, with its accom*-
panyiug reasons, there should be a suspen
sion of public opinion upon the subject.
The present head of the university, Dr.
Nunnaliy, Is a man of versatile talents, and
unbounded euergy and industry, aud the
institution has certainly muds rapid strides
under bis administration. Far bn it from
me than to piuck one laurel from the brow
of Mercer’s gifted president. Nor do I pre
tend to express an opinion upon the differ
ences which have brought about this trouble
in tbe faculty. But all will join me in the
hope that a spirit of concession and com
promise may obtain In the deliberations of
the board, and these distinguished sava .ts be
indueed to retaiu their respective chairs.
They are all of them darn in et venera
bile, and it is not too much to assert that it
would be difficult, if not impossible, to sup
ply their places from the roll of southern
scientists.
At the feet of these Gamaliels, in some
Instances for a hslf century, have the youth
of the land been trained, and governors,
congressmen, judges, generals, diplomats,
authors and distinguished divines sent forth
to bless and illustrate thoir country in
every sphere of action.
In all the departments of science may be
found among them skilled Instructors fully
abreast in the march of mind and progress,
and derelict in nothing. To discriminate
would be invidious. Their names are as
household words and their services will
never be forgotton. Again, there is the
wish reiterated, that the board of trustees
may succeed in restoring harmony and pre
serving the present able organization of the
university. H. H. J.
THE REVOLVER S.’OPFED HIM.
Narrow Escape From Bloodshed in
an Alliance Meeting.
From the Xeto York Timet,
Charleston. 8. <J., July 4.—At the
annual meeting of the Laurens oounty
alliance at Laurens, 8. U., yesterday, they
had a lively time and the meeting came
near ending in bloodshed and riot. Tbe
occurrence is made one of especial Interest
bv tho tact that United States Senator J. L.
M- Irby was one of the principals in tbe
d.fficulty.
The meeting was secret and details are
consequently meager. It seems that re
cently Prof. Evans of Laurens high school,
of which Irbv is chief patron, invited
Judge A. C. Haskell to address the pupils.
Haskell was ti:e straightout democratic
candidate for governor last, fall against,
Tillman, and Irby declared Evan's action
on insult to him and his party. He also got
G. IV. MoElroy, a political ally, to write a
card denouncing Evans. Tho result was
that next day Evans attempted to o&ne
McElroy on the streets, and only desisted
when the latter agreed to sign a prepared
retraction.
At the alliance meeting yesterday, while
Senator Irby was speaking, McElroy Inter
rupted blai and charged lam with haviug
incited the publication of the card, and
failing to stand up to it like a man. Irby’s
reply was rather savage when JlcEroy out
the colloquy short by denouncing him as a
liar in an emphatic manner. Irby sprang
from the stage and mode a rush for SlcEl
roy, who promptly drew a revolver a. and
called to him to come on, declaring himself
ready for the fray.
A number of hot-heads present joined In
the row, and for a few mluutes things
looked equally. McElroy all the time
stood, pistol in band, cooly awaiting the
advance of the senator. When Irby saw
the gleam of the revolver, however, he
stopped, and in a short time wiser counsel
prevailed and peace was restored. No
further trouble between the men is antici
pated.
C. A. Thompson, Seymour, Ind., writes:
“My sister Jenuie, whoa she was a young
girl, suffered from white swelling, which
greatly impaired her general health and
made her blood very impure. In tho spring
she was not able to do anything and could
scarcely get about. More than a year ago
she took three bottles of B. tanlc Blood
Balm, and now she is peifoctly cured.”—Ad.

find it ended up with a recommen

and by their protracted use, a com

Pierce’s Pellets often cure sick head
