SAVANNAH’S STSAM3OAT LINE3
AND THEIK TRAFFIC.
The Territory They Open to Trade.
M'.llions of Dollars of Freights Han
dled by Them—The Extent of the
Steamboat Service in Savannah and
tn Adjoining Georgia and Florida
Territory The Ocean Steamship
Fleets.
Few people aro aware of the magnitude of
the steamboat service in Savannah aud what
is known a3 the Savannah district of the
steamboat inspection service, which inoludes
not only Savannah but the entire coast and
inland waters from Savannah to Cape Ca
naveral, Fla.
In that territory there are over 200
steamers employed, with an aggregate ton
nage of over 40,000 tons. Seventeen new
steamers were added to the district last
vear. aud nearly twice as many will be
added this year. In this service there were
last year 727 masters, mates, pilots andjen
gmeer licensed by the government through
the United States local inspectors of steam
vessels, beside tho crews. Tho steamboat
business, therefore, gives employment to
thousand of people.
savannah’s steamboat fleet.
About thirty steam vessels hail from Sa
vannah ami receive their papers through
the custom house hero. Tho amount of
commeroe handled by those vessels is diffi
cult to estimate, although aggregating
millions of dollars. They ply nearly every
navigable stream in Southern and Eastern
Georgia.
The steamboats do not, by any moans,
handle the entire traffic of the inland
navigable waters tributary to Savannah,
although they carry a large part of it.
Hundreds of email sailing vessels ply be
tween Savannah and inland, bringing and
carrying a large traffic and forming a no
inconsiderable part of Savannah’s water
transportation facilities. The steam
boat lines, however, are the principal
means of water transportation bringing cot
ton, naval stores and lumber and carrying the
trade of Savannah’s merchants into the in
terior not easily accessible by rail. It is not
often that these steamers arrive or dopart
without a full cargo.
THE OCEAN STEAMSHIP COMPANY.
The Oceau Steamship Company’s fleet of
vessels, although not a part of tho river
transportation, is a part of Savannah’s
great steamer service. The company organ
ized in 1873. It was the successor and
took up the business of three separate lines
which had previously run between New
York and Savannah, operating steamships
of limited capacity. The busiuess increas
ing rapidly, necessitating ships of larger
tonnage and greator speed, contracts were
successively made for the construction of
first-class freight and passenger ships, which
have been multiplied and magnified until tho
fleet now amounts to ten ships, viz: Kansas
City, of 4,(XX) tons; the City of Augusta,
TuUahnssee, Chattahoochee, Naooochee
and City of Birmingham, each 3,000 tons,
on the New York line; the City of Macon,
City of Savannah aud Gate City, each of
2,000 tons, on the Boston line, and the Des
soug on the Philadelphia line.
Baltimore is also directly reached by a
line of steamers operated by the Merchants’
and Miners’ Transportation company, and
half a dozen lines of river steamers ply be
tween Savannah and neighboring inland
and coast ports.
THE FASTEST ON THE COAST.
The career of tho Ocean Steamship Com
pany was commenced with a weekly sailing
to New York. It was soon after increasod
to a semi-weekly, and tri-weekly line, und
is now workiug a schedule of four sailings
a week, while the Boston service has been
increased from a weekly sailing to one
every four days. Increase of facilities has
brought increase of business, resulting in
construction of ships of greater capacity
and speed. Steady improvements in
this direction have been attained until the
company realizes in tho construction of the
Kansas City the possession of the finest
coast line steamer that sails from the city
of New York. Her regular time between
the two ports is forty-four hours.
It is probable that the increasing demand
for transportation to aud from New York
wiil soon necessitate the putting on of an
other line between Savannah and New
York.
The inland lines carrying the greatest
trnffio are those between Savannah and
Augusta, and Beaufort and BlutTton, S. C.,
and Darien and Brunswick ami interme
diate points. These boats handle a trailic
far greater than most people suppose, aud
open to the interior country a wide field for
Savannah trade.

CURE SCROFULA
With Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. This disease
may well be termed “the curse of civ
ilization.” Whether hereditary or ac
quired, scrofula poisons the blood, en
feebles the constitution, causes con
sumption, catarrh, glandular swellings,
nlcers, sores, and troubles innumerable.
Fortunately, there is a remedy for this
evil. By the persistent use of Ayer's
Sarsaparilla, all traces of scrofula may
ho eradicated. Henry Brandt, Avoca,
Nebr., certi-i ifies: “For
years I suf- M/*t fered from
scrofula, till ?/111 I began tlie
use of AyerV. I Sarsaparilla,
since which the disease has entirely
disappeared. A child of mino was also
cured by the samo remedy.”
“I was a sufferer, for years, from scrof
ula and blood diseases. The doctors’ pre
scriptions being of no avail, I was at
last advised to try Ayer’s Sarsaparilla.
I did so, and now feel like anew man,
being fully restored to health.” —C. N.
