GEORGIA'S LEGISLATURE.
The Seeilon Taken Up With Reading
Bills a second Time.
Atlanta, Ga., Sept. s.—The House sre
■ion today was taken up largely with the
reading of bills a second time. There was
barely a quorum present, and not even a
quorum present all the time.
A few local bills, to which there was no
•opposition, were passed by a “courtesy
vote” of 88 to nothing.
Several bills and resolutions were Intro
duced.
REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS.
An important bill by Senator Williams
was tabled to-day by the House. Its object
is to allow another method of transferring
real estate so as to make the seller secure.
It makes a mortgage for part of the pur
chase money good against the claim for a
year's support, and yet does not deprive
persons entitled to a year’s support of any
rights they now have, for the seller always
retains the title. If the bill passes, it will
allow the same thing to be accomplished in
a different way and will protect ail parties.
The vote upon it to-day was.* T MS
3 nays, and the bill would have passed ni.h
an average attendance.
yOR INDIGENT CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS.
Mr. Phillips of Habersham introduced a
resolution to appropriate the SIO,OOO which
the oity of Macon paid to the state in 1867
* for what was known as the “State reserve,
situated near Macon, “to be paid to tbe in
digent confederate soldiers being non-pen
sioners under the present law, the same to
be nominated to the governor by the
grand jury and ordinary of the several
counties in this state, the said sum to be
pro-rated. ”
railroad rates for physicians.
Mr. LeConte of Bartow introduced a bill
providing that from and after the passage
of this act al! railroads shall be required to
oarry physicians who are in regular practice
of their profession over their roads in
freight trains, as well as upon passenger
trains, at the same rates as upon passenger
trams, the roads not to be liable for dam
ages to such passengers riding in freight
trains, except in cases of gross negligence.
A violation of this law is to be fined SIOO
to *SOO.

Columbus, O . Kept. 3,1891.
Gov. IP. ./. Xorthen. Atlanta. Ga.:
Mv Desk Sir—The Democratic party of the

great Issue before the people that of tariff
reform.
We gladly take up the gage of war
with the chief apostie ;>f protection
as the standard bearer of their party.

Brunswick's Finest Uncage in an Ex
citing Street Encounter.
Brunswick, Ga., Sept. s.— Patrolmen
, The mss Horton and William Wigging

THE JOINT DEBATE.
Livingston Moy Not Discuss the Rail
road Question With Watson.
Atlanta, Ga., Sept. s.— The chances are
that Col. Livingston will not. accept the in
vitation of certain legislators and allianoe
men to enter a joint discussion on the sub
ject of railroads with Congressman Thomas
E. W afcson. It is said that he has written a
letter to Mr. Watson, asking for an ex
pression of his views on the advisability
of their discussing the railroad question.
His answer to the request will not be
made until he has has received Mr. Watson’s

I N MEM ORI AM.
IN MEMORIAL
OF—
Miss JOSIE SHEFTALL.
The scythe of the Great Reaper never stops
its mowing. How fast the graves of loved ones
thicken around us; and. as we trace their won
drous and mysterious flight. Faith 6ees the
pearly “gates ajar" and hears the hallelujah
welcome of numbers without number! The
light of heavenly truth dispels the gloom of the
night of death, and reveals to us angelic forms
in the tomb, lu tae “chamber of imagery," as
we pay this tribute to the memory of our
sainted dead, the dear familiar face of Miss
Josie Sheftall seems beaming upon us—who
entered into rest. Aug. 14, 1891. One whose
influence lives, and is to be felt. A memorial of
whose lire should be preserved, not only as a
reco nition of the worth of the departed, but as
an incentive to the living to follow in her foot
steps. Happy thought, that the record of a
Christian's life is with God—kept in the
archives of heaven and also becomes a rich
legacy to us. To know Miss Josie was to love
her—affections to pure. She, whose piety was
so silent and unobtrusive; her life flowed like
th** deep and murmurless stream, calm and un
dismayed, gentle as cradled slumbers; ever
displaying tbe sweet spirit of the dying Christ,
meek submission the Father s will, she fell on
sleep. Her last thoughts were for kindred,
borne and heaven.
The swan song of triumph is broken off. while
merging into the hallelujahs of heaven, for the
sweeter, louder strains of the redeemed millions
on the “other shore." Our friend had been
very sick for some time, and we had hoped her
recovery, but ail that loving hands and a faith
ful physician could do did not prevent the
"King of Terrors’* from claiming her as his
victim and so suddenly, it seems, she left us.
The last words she uttered were, "Lord Jesus."
’And when we remember bow composedly she
requested her sister to gather her little memen
toes, that she might divide and mark them, to
be given to different members of the family;
and know, too, her life to tie so consistent and
devoted, we can but believe that the holy long
ings of her heart, looking for the blessed hope,
loving his appearing and hastening unto the
coming of the day of God. her soul cried out in
language of holy triumph: “Amen! Even so
come Lord Jesus " Yet the grieved ones, who
stood beside this “gate of heaven," caught only
the sound from her lips, “Lord Jesus.' Such
characters are living epistles—witnesses of the
truth it is so hard for us to realize that the
companionship of this pure-minded Christian is
forever closed here. Never hear her sweet
voice again or see her loving, cheerful face.
Comforting truth: "Earth has no sorrows that
heaven cannot heal." Yet how our timid natures
shrink and shudder back from death—the wind
ing sheet, the colfln, the tomb. But to him that
believeth grace triumphs, and the joyful strains
may mingle with the waves of JorJan,
"O, death, where is thy sting?
O, grave, where is thy victory?"
Then our faith is exchanged for sight, hope for
joy, and the Constian mariner, tossed and
driven o'er life’s troubled sea, enters, full sail,
tbe stormless port, and anchors high among the
‘•hills of God." Our loved one has finished her
course with joy—joy to herself and may her
repose, lastiug as heaven, prove so to us who
mourn her loss, our faith triumph, lising
above our tears; may our troubled hearts sub
rail, knowing that our loss is her eternal gain.
May tbe echo of our dear Redeemer's language
to his sorrowing disciples, come to us: *lf ye
loved ine ye would rejoice, because I go to my
Father." Many of our loved ones have gone
over in tho "better land," resting from the
journey. Only a few more conflicts, and, if
faithful, the banner of our victory shall wave
along the eternal shores, and all may then unite
and sing "Harvest Home." Gentle one, fare
well. Suffering, tears and death are all behind.
May we all meet you in that "life eternal,"
amid the rosy bowers of paradise, where there
is not one sigh in the wind, not one tear ming
ling with the waters. Safe in the arms of Jesus.
A Friend.
In memory of our kind and loving mother,
ELLEN T. LEACY,
Di and Aug. 8, 1831.
Dealest Mother,
We miss thy kind and willing hand.
Thy fond and earnest care.
And tho' t’was God’s own holy will,
*Tis hard, so hard to bear.
Tis hard to break the tender chord
When love bound our hearts together.
‘Tis harder still to think on earth
We ll see thee, never, never.
O. Jesus! while our hearts are bleeding
O'er tho spoils that thou hast won,
Wo will at this solemn meeting
Calmly say thy will be done.
