“THE DEVIL'S HOLE." A Bemarka’ole Story of an Old Saint Near Chattahoochee. Chattahoochee, Fla., Sept. s.—About three miles east of this city, near the Sa vannah, Florida and Western railroad tracks, there is an old “sink” called the “devil’s hole.” It is thought by negroes to be bottomless, and they make it a point to evade this particular spot after nightfull. Tueold Wire road, leading from here to Quincy and Tallahassee, ran near enough several years ago to have pitched a stons into it from a passing vehicle. Several un successful attempts were made to get the countv to put a wire fonco around the piuce." Then some property bolder “kicked” at that, and it was decided to move the road half a mile to the left, and this was done. many strangb and curious legends aro told about this wonderful “suck hole.” In 18GS there was a family living r.ear here whom we will call Jones—al though Jones is not the real name. Mr. Jones was a mechanic by trade and consid ered to be “well up” in bis chosen profession. He was about 50 or 00 years of age and very industrious and thrifty. He had not been here very long before he married a young ■woman about 22 years of age. They lived very happily together for a short time, but after four months of wedded lifo bis wife presonted him with a bouncing baby boy. Naturally he was much surprised. A few nights later .Mrs. Jones and her baby disap peared, and it was generally supposed that be bad either fled to avoid her shame or had leftfor parts unknown with her love.-. After several weeks had elapsed the excitement over the alfair gradually died out and it was seldom spoken of. Jones became sulky and morose; he moved out of his neat, plain frame dwelling into a log cabin in a deso late location several miles from town aud was seldom Eeeu. About two years after his wife disap peared ho was takou suddenly sick with typhoid fever. His condition was acci dentally learned by a stranger named Ellis. The citizens gave him medical atteution im mediately, but after several days of unre mitting atteution it was clearly evident 1 that he would never reoover. MAKES A CONFESSION. One night, about two weeks after he had become sick, he called several gen tlemen to his bedside, and confessed to them that he had either choked his wife to death or into insensibil ity and thrown her and her infant babe into the horrible sink. As Jones had wealthy and influential relatives who were highly esteemed, the story was kept from the general public for tneir sake. Several years after this incident a young farmer was going to town with three bales of cotton. In the two-mule team which ho had was his little girl. Espying the cool and shady puddle of wator near the road he turned his team aside so that the mules could get a drink of water. They made a wild rush for the pool, as all animals will do when they are thirsty, especially mules, and they went up to their knees in the treacherous loam. The driver beat them and yelled at them trying to force them out of their danger, but without avail The more they tried to extricate themselves the deeper they sank. The driver too late realized that he had driven his faithful mules, team, load and all into a genuine “suckhole.” He snatched up his little daughter and made a herculean jump for safety. He cleared the dangerous ground ami started Immediately for help to rescue his team. When he returned several hours later with thirty or forty men and ropes, rails, etc., not a sign remained to toll him what had become of the mules, wagon and cotton. LOSS OF CATTLE IN THE HOLE. A great many cattle, hogs, and several horses, sheep, goats, eta, have taken passes Chinawjird by way of the “Devil’s Hole” route. Of late years this dangerous suck bo,’e has been filling up and is not now con sidered very dangerous, although it is still shunned. Mothers teach their children from infancy to give a wide berth to this ■pot. It is thought by negroes to be haunted, and there is not money enough in Gadsden county to get one to speud the uigbt withlu a hundred yards of the place. PUTNAM CRIMINAL COURT. Two Interesting Cases on Trial Last Week. Palatka, Fla., .Sept. s.—The county criminal court has attracted a crowded court room this woek. The State vs. John D. Points and the State vs. KedmaD, both assaults with intent to murder, were the cases of interest. in the first the evidence showed that young Points had shot a negro girl, and the defense was that be took her to be a thief. The verdict was “Not guilty.” The Heilman case was part and parcel of this, and a report of one without the ether would be incomplete. Redman, a negro, was charged with having shat at young Points in revenge for the injury to the girl, and Points was on the stand testifying when the jury in his oase returned. The evidence against Redman was pretty con clusive and it was the general opinion that he would suffer for taking the low in his own hands. The jury failed to agree. It is understood that flvo wore for conviction , and one for acquittal. battles with the bat. Hasulteofthe Ball damas Between Vvm Country's Big Clubs. The organs are not forced into activity one day, to sink back into a worse state the next. They’re cleansed and regulated—mildly and quietly, without wrenching or griping. One, tiny Pellet is all that’s needed as a laxa tive; three to four act as a cathartic. They’re the smallest, cheapest, the easi est to take. THE K'iNNEDY MURDER. The Verdict of the Coroner’s Jury—The Reward Offered. Clayton, Ga., Sept. s.—An inquest was held on the body of Mr. Kennedy to-day by Dr. Gordon, the coroner, assisted by Dr. R. B. Sconyers of Claxton. Dr. Sconyors testified that Mr. Kennedy came to his death by a load of buckshot entering his left shoulder, passing through bis right lung aud the arteries of the heart. His ehouldor and one rib were also broken. The News correspondent did not hear the evldenoe, as most of it was private. However, some parties are suspected, ami ■will probably be arrested. To Have a Delicious Cup of Coffee it Must be Made . FRESH. When Possible, it ls Best to Grlni} the Coffee Yourself. Few people understand the Importance of freshly ground and freshly ma le col Tee. To have a perfect cup of this delicious beverage it is not only necessary to have high grade coffee like the well-known MOMAJA, but it is best that the bean should not be ground until the coffee is about to be made, livery family should have a small hand mill, go adjusted that it will grind the coffee moderately tine. Buy in small quantities, so that it Is sure of being fresh roasted. Do not expose the bean or ground coffee to the air any moro than you can helD, and immediately after grinding pour on the water, first making sure that it is boiling. Bet it simmer gently on the stove for about flfteeu minutes (not boil), and then serve immediately with h-t milk In this way you can be c rtain of setting the best reauits from such exquisitely blended coffee as MOMAJA.
