TSaSsw and Grist Mill of K. A. Giles
Burned to tbe Ground.
REIDSVILL.V, Ua., Oct. 3.—The news
reached Keidavillo Wednesday of the burn
ing of the steam saw-mill, together with the
grist mill and two gins and several bales of
cotton, of R. A. Giles of this county. The
loss on the said mill alone is put at $2,000,
and the total loss is about $3,000. There
•was no insurance. It is fully believed that
the tire is the work of an inceudiary, and,
to bear out this theory, it is said that the
gins were run until late Tuesday night.
When the workmen knocked off they ex
amined the premises carefully for fire, and
then closed the doors and windows. On re
turning to tho mill Wednesday morning
one of the windows was found broken open,
and tbe bouso discovered to be on fire. and
before assistance could lie obtained every
thing was destroyed. Although Mr. Giles’
losses are heavj-, he is amply able to rebuild
and furnish his mill again, and we are satis
fied that he will rebuild at an early day.
Certain parties have been suspected of
this crime, and we are informed that detect
ives are on t heir trac';.
AN ALLIANCE RALLY.
The Cofifes County Brethren Ad
dressed by Commissioner Nesbitt.
Douglas. Ga„ Oct. 3. —Oct. 1 was a big
day for Douglas The Coffee county al
liance held a rally and about 1.500 ceople
from all parts of the county composed the
crowd. At 10 o’clock Commissioner Nes
bitt of the agricultural department ad
dressed the crowd oa the functions of the
department. Prof. Overman followed him
with an alliance speech, and after his
speech a sumptuous dinner was spread.
After dinner tbe crowd reassembled in
court house, and after prayer and some
choice music, Mayor Adams of Willacoo
chee was introduced and delivored a speech
upon the Dmocratic party.
He discussed the principles of the order,
and said that the third party was a myth,
and that he quit the Democratic party once
for tho Labor party in Texas to his sorrow,
and tnat ho never expected to “bolt” again.
The faot was apparent toat the Coffee
county alliance is solidly democratic.
Col. Nesbitt has other appointments in
the cimnty for the rest of the week.
Pittsburg's striking Printers.
Pittsburg, Pa., Oct. s.—The striking
job printers of this city were greatly excited
last night over the arrival of seventy three
printers and pressmen from Philadelphia.
The new men were met at the station by a
committee of the employers’ association
and distributed among the various offices.
Another delegation will arrive to
day. The employers assort that they will
not concede the demands and will import
enough men to break the strike. An effort
will be made by the strikers to induce the
new men to join tho union.
Strike of the Miners.
Pittsburg, Pa., Oct. 3.—There is noth
ing new in the coal miners’ strike. Both
sides are firm and a long fight is antici
pated.
