Henry Priest of Medway, a well-known lumberman, has a thrilling experience with a bull in' os- 1 . Mr Priest is about 50 years of age and lame but knowing how savage a buil moose 'g at this season of the year he was not slow in taking a Nelson gait for the nearest tree, into tbe'brauehes of which he swung him self just in time to escape the infuriated Priest was unharmed, but perched in the tree he had a good chance to inspect this ••monarch of the forest.” Mr. Priest says the animal was a huge fellow, and would weigh over half aton. On his widj-spread ina antlers wore twenty-five prongs, which „ r o pointed and sharp, and would pierce tfce tlesb like a Damascus sword. For an hour the moose walked about the tree, pawed the ground, and occasionally emitted bellows which were anything ex cen- tousle to Mr. Priest’s ears. The min utes fassed slowly, seeming like hours to llr. Pri'.st in his uncomfortable seat in the tree. Finally the mooso went away some distance, and Mr. Priest took the opportun ity to slide to the ground and started for a w’hito Ureh grow.h which was some dis tance away. _ He had safely covered part of the space ■when the moose discovered him. Then there was a wild go-as-you-please race. Mr. Priest fortunately had a good start, and reaching the birch trees, struck a match und t uebed it to the bark, which, catching firo like tinder, the flames with a roaring sound shot into the air. This was anew ex perience to the moose, a genuine surprise. He sto and for a moment looking at the ruddy blaze, and listening to the crackling flames, whan he turned, and with a bound disap psared in the forest. The method of attack with the bull moose is with bis antlers and forefeet, the edges of the hoofs of which are as sharp as a keen cutlass. Woe to the man whom the moose attacks. A person had better struggle with a bear than to have a contest with a bull moose when he is in an angry mood. A few years ago an Indian who was camping near Mount Katahdin called a bud with a mooso horn. The bull surprised poor Lo, and he had a fearful hand-to-hand struggle. When Joe Danny, the Indian, who was ono of the tribe at Lincoln Island and quite famous in his day, emerged from the battle and took refuge in a tree, ho had not a shred of clothing upon him, and his face and body bore evidences that the struggle had been one which nearly caused the death of poor Joe. It is not unusual for bull moose at this season of the voar to attack men. The late Moses Wadleigh of Oldtown and an Indian were onoe treed by a moose. The moi.se saw fit to pay particular attention to Mr. Wadleigh. The Indian slid out of his tree, and, as he started on the run, said: 11 Any news t< send down to Oldtown, Mr. Wad leigh:” Mr. Wadleigh escaped, and lived many years to tell of the adventure. Their courtship was by letter, and the most I roma-itic part of the affair was the fact that his own daughter was the matchmaker. Miss Way was the head of a department in the dry goods store. Mr. Wall’s vivacious iS-year-old daugh ter Belle secured a position in the same s ore su months ago and was assigned to Miss Way’s department. They became dear friends. Miss TVall read her father’s letters to Miss Way and also told her what a dear good father he was. She also wrote to her father what a good friend Miss Way we3 to her, and u hat a charming lovable little •Oman she was. In a short time, through the daughter’s introductory letters, the father and his daughter’s friend opened a correspondence. Editor Morning News : As I have made the very important discovory of the only true solution of the currency auestion, “the something better,” which is now bothering the farmers and al iance leaders so much, I beg you to let me present it through the I columns of the Morsinq News. In the first place, the farmers want to obtain money without being held duly responsible I? 1 " . ~ intent are they on doing this that they are willing to have the whole patronage of warehouse clubs and paymas ter turned over to the hands of the negroes if the republicans succeed iu the mxt election—how will they like this ? If the cry for more money is not hypocritical and the farmer-, are willing to becorao duly respon sible for the same, here is, theu, a solution for all of their troubles. Let the state issue guaranteed bonds to each and every county in the state for as many millions as may be wanted for banking nurposos, and in addi tion let congress indorse those bonds so that it will be a national currency; then let the farmers of each county form as many banking societies as they wish, pledging one-half of the value of all unincumbered real estate, at its tax valuation, as security for the bonds. The state should charge 2 per cent, on these bonds. A treasurer and two directors, with suitable bonds, should be elected or appointed in each county to havo charge of these bonds, and issue the necessary amount of currency to the different banking socie ties after havi ig the titles duly examined by a competent aitorney.or it could he issued directly to the people through the county treasurer. The regular state and county treasurer and tax collector and assessor should also made director in this banking business. Where the state issued the cur rency direct to the people through the' county treasurer, 6 por cent, interest should be charged and a mortgage taken on their real estate at half its taxable value. The regular county officers would be of very great help to the bank in arriving at the proper valuation of tbe proper-y. As land is really tbe capital of the farmers, this method would give them the same banking privilege that the capitalist with his money has. This currency should be made receivable for all dues except import duties. I havo now given a crude outline of what I believe to bo far more praotlcal than any thing of “ths something better” that I have yet seen. It places the whole management of the business in the hands of the farmers instead of negroes and republican advent urers. It places the farmer oi an equality with the merchant and other money haul ers. It capitalizes lau 1 and makes it an ex ceedingly importaut frctor in tbe fit snees of the nation. OEonoiA Cracker.
