RAIL AND CROSSTIff.
General Manager TV. H. G reen of the
Richmond and Danville railroad arrived in
Sivaunaii last night in his private car, on
his regular tour of inspection of the
Central railroad.
Experienced Traveler (at railway restau
rant): “When did that man at the other
table give his order?’’ VVaiter: “Bout ten
minutes ago, sail!” “What did he ordor?”
“Beefsteak and fixin’s, snh.” “How much
did he fee you?” “Quarter, sah.” "Well,
here’s half a dollar. Cook him another
steak and bring me his.” "Yes, sah.”— Ex.
The fastest time made by passengers be
tween Son Francisco and New York, trav
eling on logular schedule trains, was com
pleted last week, a special car containing"
John W. Mackay and party having accom
plished the trip in four days, twelve hours
and twenty-eight minutes, deducting for
the difference of time between San Fran
cisco and Now York. Although this rapid
trip was made by regular trams it was only
accomplished by giving permission to have
the special car attached to the fast mail over
she Union Pacific fporn Green River, Wyom
in -, to Council Bluffs, and thence by the
fast mail over the Burlington road to Chi
cego. Of course this run does not compare
in actual speed with that made by the
celebrated Jarrett & Palmer special train in
IB7C, which covered the distance between
Sau Francisco and New York in less than
hghty-four hours, or just about twenty
four hours less than the time abovo noted.

Birds That Catch Fish fbr the Negroes
of the African Coast.
From the San Francisco Examiner.
A number of interested spectators were
staadiag at the sea wall at North Beach
watching a party of youngsters who were
angling for mud porgies through holes
bored in the planking. The fish bit quite
eagerly, and several were pulled through
tke holes and laid on the wharf witbiD a
few m.nutes. Fiaally one of the bystaud
er®! turning to a companion, said:
The queerest way to catch fish that I
ever saw was oa the African coast, where
the natives do it by proxy.”
