encouraged by the sale of their crops of
leaf tobacco at profitable prices, and will
riant a largely increased acreage next
season. F. T. Christie of Miccosukio
planted Vk acres as an ex
perimental patch. He housed 900 pounds
of excellent leaf from the little patch and
sold it at 45 cents a pound, realizing $405
from it. Other crops have been sold et
equally as good prices. There is promise of
a genuine tobacco boom here.
The engine and cars to complete the con
struction train for the Florida, Georgia and
Western railway have arrived, and track
laying will be begun in a few days.
All the county schools opened to-day.
The attendance is much larger than It was
last year.
FLORIDA’S METROPOLIS.
Opening of the Schools—Burglars Still
Busy.
Jacksonville, Fla., Oct. s.—The Jack
sonville schools opened to day with an at
tendance of 514 white and 441 colored. A
strict examination was made to see that all
pupils had been vaccinated, in compliance
with the edictof the board of health. About
75 percent, were found vaccinated.
Sneak thieves are still as plentiful as ever.
Two houses were entered yosterday morn
ing. .No arrests have been mads. This morn
ing about 2 o'clock Mr. and Mrs. V. Stein,
wno live on the east side of Main street next
to R. P. Andrews’ store, on the corner of
Main and Ashley streets, were awakened by
a noise. Mr. Stein got up and looked out,
and on the shed in anlalloy between his
bouse and Mr.Andrewa’ store ho beheld two
negroes endeavoring to get into Mr. An
drews’sleeping apartments above the store
through a window. Mr. Stein got his pistal
an! shot at the burglars twice. They fled
and left; no evidence of having been hit.
The drummers of Florida have sent
hearty congratulations to Mr. and Mrs.
Cleveland on tho udveait of that baby and
