Blornstierne Ejornaon Writes Another
Good Story-Here It Is in all Its Pure,
fountain Flavor end Wild, Poetic
eentlment— Old Canute’s Daughter.
from the Strand Magazine.
From the time that Aslang was quite
own U p there was no longer any peace or
auietat Husaby. In fact, all the hand
somest youug fellows iu the village did
nothing but light and quarrel night after
. and it was always worst on Saturday
izhts. Aslang’s father, old Canute
Husaby. never went to bed on those nights
without keeping on at least his leather
breeches and laying a good stout birch stick
on the bed beside him. ‘ ’lf I have such a
tt y daughter," said old Canute, “I must
know bow to take care of her.”
Thor >'esset was only the son of a poor
m’tager and yet folks said that it was he
we it oftenest to visit the farmer’s
dauzhter at Husaby. Of course, old Canute
was not pleased to hear this. He said it
was not true; that, at any rate, be had
never seen him there. Still they smiled
! and whispered to each other that if he only
had thoroughly searched the hay loft,
whither Aslang had many an errand, he
would have found Thor there.
Spring came, and Aslang went up the
mountain with the cattle. And now when
the beut of the day hung over the valley,
the rocks rose cool and olear through too
sun’s mistv rays, the cow bells tinkled, the
shepherd’s dog barked, Aslang sang her
••jodel” songs, and blew the cow horn, all
the young men felt their hearts grow sore
and heavy as they upon her beauty.
And on the lirst Saturday evening one
after the other they crept up the hill. But
they came down again quicker than
they had gone up, for at the top stood
a man who sept guard, receiving each one
who came up with such a warm reception
that he all his long life remembered the
words that accompanied tbeaction: "Cotne
up here again and there will be still more
in store for you!"
All the young tellows could arrive but at
one conclusion, that there was only one
nan in the wnolo parish who had such
s§;s, and that man was Thor Nesset. And
ill the rich farmers’ daughters thought it
as too bad that this cottager's son should
lnd highest in Aslang Husaby’s favor.
Old Canute thought the same when be
beard about it all, and said that if there
were no one else who could check him be
vouid do it himself. Now Canute was cer
tainly getting on in years, still, although
hi was past 00, he often enjoyed a good
wrestling match with his eldest son waen
ever time indoors fell heavy on his bands.
There was but one path up to the
mountain belonging to Husaby, and it went
straight through the farm garden. Next
Saturday evening as Thor was on his way
to the mountain, creeping carefully across
the yard, hurrying as soon as he was well
past the farm buildings, a man suddenly
rushed at him.
“iVhat do you want with me?” asked
Thor, and hit him such a blow iu the faoo
that i parks danced before his eyes.
“You will soon learn that,” said some
one else behind him, and gave him a great
blow in the back of his neck. That was
Asiatic's brother.
“And here’s the third mansaid Old
Canute, and attacked him also.
The greater the danger the greater was
Thor’s strength. He was supple as a willow
and hit out right manfully; he dived and he
docked; whenever a blow fell it missed him,
and when none expected it he would deal a
good one. He stooped down, he sprang on
one side, but for all that be got a
terrible thrashing. Old Canute said ufter
"ard that ‘ ‘be had never fought with a
braver fellow.” They kept it up till blood
began to flow, then Canute cried out,
“S op!” Then he added in a oroaking tone:
“If you can got up here next Saturday, in
spite of Canute Husaby aud his men, the
girl shall be yours 1”
Thor dragged himself home as best he
could, and when he reached the cottage
went straight to bed. There was a great
deal of talk up on Husaby bill, but every
one said, “ Why did he go there!” Only one
person did not say so, and that was Aslang.
bhehad been expecting Thor that Saturday
evening, but jvheu she heard what bad
happened between him aud her father, she
sat down and cried bittetly and said to her
self: "If l may not have Thor I shall never
bave a happy day again in this world.”
I Thor stayed In bis bed all Sunday, and
when Monday came he felt be must stay
cn where he was. Tuesday came, and it
was a very lovely day. It had rained in
tbs night; the hills looked so fresh and
gree.i, the window was open, sweet odors
were wafted in, the cowbells were tinkling
on the mountain and far up above some
body was "j riling.” * * * Truly, if it
bad not been for his mother who was sitting
in the room he c uld have cried. Wednes -
dav cs:ue aud still he stayed in bed; oil
Thursday, though, he began to think about
the possibility of being well again by Satur
day, and Friday found him on his legs
®£uin. Then bethought of what Aslang's
father had said: “If you can get up to her
next Saturday without being stopped by
Canute aud his men the girl shall be yours.”
river and over again helooked up at Husaby
farm; "I shall never see another Cbrist
inas,” thought Thor.
As before mentioned, there was but one
path up to Husaby hill; but surely any
strong, able fellow must be able to get to
it, even through tbe direct way were barred
to him. For instance, if he were to row

[Bjornstierne Bjornsou, the first and great

two years’residence at Copenhagen, to which

chief Dan.sh writers, confirmed him in his
resolve to create a literature in Norway.
He was only 20 when lie assumed the directoV
ship of the theater at Bergen, where he produced
play after play- of national importance. Ho
wrote also several novels, of which "Arne” and
"In God’s Way" are. perhaps, the best known
to English readers. The above little story show s
as well as any of his long romances his peculiar

The Judson Pneumatic Street Railway
Company wants to establish street railways
in Leavenworth, Ivan., to be operated by
compressed air on the storage plan. The
company wants $250,000 of city renl estate
in return for its benefaction, and further
agrees to see that ten distinct manufactur
ing enterprises shall be established in the
town, eaohto employ not less than twenty
five men, and it proposes to supply the ten
factories or any ten factories with oom
pressed air power free of charge for two
years’ time.
Plans and specifications for anew union
depot in Atlanta are being prepared in
New York. The depot will be located be
tween the tracks of the East Tennessee and
the old Monroe track of the Central road
near Mitchell street. It will bo paid for by
the Richmond and Danville, Central, East
Tennessee and Georgia Pacilio jointly, and
will be used by them for all their passen
ger business. The Richmond and Dauville,
on behalf of Hues interested, proposes to
lease the union depot for one year only.
Before that time expires the new union
depot will be ready for use. As thoir plans
for obtaining the right to use the old depot
have probably fallen tnrough, it is intended
to begin work in a very short while on the
new one.
Col. H. S. Morse, the projeotor and builder
of the Macon and Dublin railroad, says
that either a combination will bs formed
between the Maoon and Atlantic road wheu
completed, or tie Macon and Dublin would
proceed on to Savannah. The road, ho says,
cannot afford to stop at Dublin, aud dues
not propose doing so. From facts gathered
it seems, to the Macon Telegraph, that the
Maoon and Dublin has been and is still
waiting on the Macon and Atlantic people
to build, with the view of combining their
interests. There seams to be but little pros
pect that the Macon aud Atlantic will
build further this way thau Brewton,
and necessity forces it to combine or
sell out. The Mucon and Dublin people
have waited for the completion of the road,
and are still disposed to wait until it is seen
the road cannot he completed by the pres
ent projectors. In this case the Macon and
Dublin will offer to buy the road out com
plete, or if this cannot be done then the
Macon aud Dublin will build independently
to Savannah. There is t.e best of feeling,
tho Telegraph says, between toe two roads,
and the Macon aud Dublin would
under no consideration attempt to
parallel tbe Macon and Atlantio to
Savannah as Icing as there is a chance
for that road to be built, but, as Mr. Morse
says, the Macon and Dublin must have an
outlet and will have It. The most generally
accepted view of it is that the Macon and
Atlautlo will be completed to Brewton by
the present projectors, and will there oon
neot with the Macon and Dublin, giving
Macon another through line to the coast.
The Macon and Dublin, it is claimed, can
secure all the money necessary for making
any arrangements for buying the Maoon
and Atlantic road.
Tbe Chicago Herald describes at length a
new elcotno street oar, a double decker,
weighing 38,00 J pouuis, which seems to be
successfully and economically operated by
the Westinghouse motor. “The new car.”
says the Herald, “is the joint invention of
E. C. (Sessions, a banker in Oakland, Cal.,
and C. L. Pullman. It is operated by the
trolley electric system. In general appear
ance it resembles the double-decked ve
hicles in common use io London aud Paris,
aud it presents a handsome appearance.
It is 33 feet long. 7 feet a;id 4
inches wide, and 14 feet 'J'-j inches
high. The chief aim of the inventors
was to design a car wit® double tho usual
carrying capaoiy. The new car will seat
forty passengers on each deck. The oar
body is so arranged that the passengers may
enter at tbe center of either side, whore
spiral stairs lead to the upper deck. Four
stairways, combined with two at the bot
tom, separate toward the top, leading to
either end of the car. The entrances at the
center occupy no mure space tUau the end
pmtform. on ordinary street cars. The car
is equipped with electric chandelier and a
double oil lamp in each compartment.
Kiectric heaters ore also set in the car. Two
Westiughouse mot rs of twenty-five horse
power furnish the force. The car rests
on two trucks of special design, arranged
with doublo-braka attachments and a fric
tion brake. Tne efficiency of the brakes
was demonstrated by the stoppage of the
car within its own length while traveling
at a speed of twelve miles an hour. The
operation of the motors was perfect, giving
great, spe rt and being under perfect control.
The car requires tho services of three em
ployes, and cost #3,500. An incorporate !
company has been formed by a number of
Chicago capitalists for the manufacture of
this new car, and they hope to he able ; o
furaih an important factor toward solving
the transportation problem during the
world's fair. It will bo known a the Full
man center vestibule street car with upper
seats.”

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?”

"X Do Not Live,’’ Replied the Humor
ist—“l am Boarding. ’*
From the. Andies’ Home Journal.
A boarding house at its best is but a poor
home, and this fact tbe oue woo presides
over it should never overlook. Just so far
as it is within her power, it should 1 her
aim to make those in her house feel that
they are not boarders, b it members of one
family, and by tact she can accomplish
this. In some cases the woman who pre
sides over the house believes it best not to
mingle with her guests, and this is far safer
and more diplomatic policy than to become
too familiar with them. At the same
time she should know those
under her roof sufficiently woll
to study their tastes and ideas of home life,
aud then meet the nso far a< she can. Her
influence can bo felt to an equal extent
away from b one as though she were sealed
at it. Tbe band of a good manager is eas
ily detected in anything, and this is espec
ially true in a boarding house. There is
generally something wrong in a house where
the boarders go direct from the dinner
table at evening to tbeir rooms, instead ot
meeting tu social intercourse. In this the
wouiai who presides over tbe

THE LATEST THINGS IN JEWELS.
Myriads of Novelties Seen by a Sharp
sighted Woman.
From the Jewelers' Circular.
A heart-shaped locket of sardonyx was
seen with a cupid cut in intanglio.
Tiny caohou boxes covered with re
pousse work are designed for men’s vest
pockete.
A circular brooch made of twisted bands
of small diamonds and olivines is a pretty
trifle.
Tue trident is anew form for a lady’s
gold hat pin. Tho prongs are luxuriously
set with diamonds.
A beautiful object in a scarf pin is a wom
an’s bust with arms thrown up behind her
head cut out of moonstone.
Another instance of a tasteful display iu
a jeweler’s window is a wreath made of
enameled Cowers with diam nd ('outer*.
Scarf pins in sard, gr-en tourmaline, gar
net, and labradorite out intaglio are among
the most elegant as well as artistic scarf
pins.
New bonbon boxes are hexagonal, tbe
corners being mereiy cut off, and bave a
picture iu enamel, usually u cupid, set in tbe
cover.
A long-felt want is supplied in small round
boxes of repousse silver t at resemble bon
bon boxes, but inside conceal a dainty littio
powder puff.
One of the prettiest rings baa bowknot
of small diamonds for a set. The dainti
ness of the design lies in the idea that
these ribbons are attached to tho ends of tbe
uncompleted circtet and complete it.
A species of dolphin, long enough to
wrap himself around and curl ni, tail so as
to flt in an imaginary circla, makes one of
tbe newest gold brooches. Tne finish is
rough and uuuolished, and tiny diamonds
serve as eyes.
A diamond star recently seen has one
long blazing ray and lesser rays of differ
ent length mingled with slender beams of
light indicating tine lines of gold. It is an
entirely new departure in the time-honored
diamond star, and a step toward things as
they are.
Advantage of tbe layers and tint* in a
piece of opaline was taken to carve the
heads of youth and old age, one looking
right and above, tbe other loft and be
neath. On another piece of opaline wa: a
butterfly, and on another a paroquet ex
quisitely carved.
Tall, slender glass vases with flaring tops
come in red and yellow shaded glass. Tbe
larger ones bave a transparent snake with
bis tail wrapped around tile vase and his
head resting on the glass vase.
That wsssn appropriate bit of music they
bad at the cattlemens annual dinner.”
