Quitman, Ga„ Oct. 17,-Haywood Man
mny a farmer of Colquitt county, about 35
years old. was snot and killed last night by j
Henry Tillman at the home of the latter in
this county. Manning brought a load of
cotton to Quitman yesterday, and after dis
posing of it left for home. He was sober
when he left town, but was drunk wnen he ,
reached Tillman’s, two Ire miles from town. f

tion verdict of justifiable homicide was
returned by the juay.
ONLY ONX WITNESS.
Only one witness was sworn, a Mr. Taylor
of Berrien county. He testified that he
was near Tillman’s when be heard Man ing
ooramg up hallooing. Manning stopped
about 100 yard* from Tulmaus bouse. It
was abojt 9 o’clock. Manning called to
Tillman to oorue out. Tillman came out
and the witness heard Tillman say: "iou
have your knife open, don’t get bo close
upon me.” Tillman kept backing from
Manning and finally turned and ran around
the back of hie b. use. Manning then drove
his wag l >n op in front of Tillman s house,
got off his wagon and started in the house.
The witness intercepted him, stopped him
at the steps, shook hands with him and
asked him to have a seat. Manning sat
down on tbe front porch, holding his knife
open in his hand.
SPOILING FOR A FIGHT.
The witness tried to persuade Manning to
leave, but he got angry and jumped up and
commenced cursing again. Tillman came
in and told Manning he must not curse and
act in that way, as his wife was not in a
condition to bear excitement. Tillman and
the witness finally prevailed on Manning to
leave, 'ihe deceased got in his wa. on and
drove down the mad 100 yards and slopped,
turned around and cme back cursing, say
ing he could whip any Tillman in
tbe world. When be came back Tillman
and the witness were sitting in tbe house.
Tillman m tbe meautime secured his
pigt l, and when he saw Manning coming
be shouted to him that if he came in the
gate he would shoot him.
IGNORED THE WARNING.
The deceased came in and pointed his
pistol. The witiess sprang forward and
kspt him from shooting. The w itness went
out and again succeeded in getting Man
ning started for home, bu - again he re
turned cursing and hallooing, this tim9
coming in the house. Tillman asked the
witness what he snould do, saying he d.d
not wi-h to kill the deceased. Manning
came in and cut at Tillman. Tillman
backed out of the door. Manning ran him
arouud the house twice, cutting at him.
Manning then quit following Tillman and
went back in tbe bouse, cursing and halloo
ing. Tillman went in and told him be must
leave. The deceased then cut at Tillman,
cutting bis vest, Ti.lman then fired, the
first ball going through the deceased's hat,
the second and third taking effect in the
left nipple and toe fourth in the back below
tbe right .boulder. The deceased leaves
seven small children.

The City Threatened With a Eerious
Famine Uni jss Rain Comes Soon.
Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 17.—Atlanta is
threatened with a serious water famine.
Uuless Providenoe sends rain to the city’s
relief very soon there will be suffering on
account of the meager supply. The water
in the reservoir is now lower than it has
ever teen before aud the inflowing supply
is insufficie .t to meet the needs of the peo
ple. So serious is the situation that the
water board was convened today by the
superintendent of the water works, who
suomi ted a statemeut showing a startling
condition of affairs. He deflated that a
manifesto should be at once Issued prohibit
ing the citizens from using the water for auy
other than absolutely necessary pu- poses.
All sireer sprinklers, excep a few supplied
by the artesian well, which will keep a ,wn
the dust on Peachtree street to the exposi
tion grounds, have been stepped, and the
public is enjoined from ustug water to
sprinkle yards or streets. The streets are in
hn unbearably dusty condition, and unless
ref .’Oibing showers s on coma the people of
Atlanta will be in sore affliction.

The Directors to Make a Tour of the
Near-by c ities.
Augusta, Ga., Oct. 17.—The Augusta
exposition directors wiil leave for Charles
ton to-night, and wiil al o visit Savannah,
Macou, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville,
Birmingham and other points. The expo
sition opens Nov. Z It promises
to be the best industrial ex
hibition ever held in Augusta.
Eve y foot of space in the vast building is
already engaged. The exhibits of textile
machinery and auricul ural implements
will he extensive. The display of the pro
ducts of the soil, forest, mine aud mill will
be complete. The first electrical dl-piay
ever made in the south will be elaborate
and oomplete, showing all the uses to which
electricity is applied.
