houses were burned in East Jack* mville to
night They were beyond the reach of
water and assistance from the fire depart
ment. One hi use was owned by J. C.

The tenants saved but little of their per
sonal effects, so rapid was the work of the

The schooner Tamos, loaded with lumber
from Hunter s mill of this place, for Alba

news of any of the crew has been received.

art Superior Court.
Lumpkin, Ga., Oct. 24.— The Stewart
superior court heard the case of state vs. S.
P. Owens, charged with bigamy. The jury
was out about ten minute . A verdict of
guilty was render and, and he was sentenced
to the penitentiary f r four years.
There is some little excitement in our
town, caused by t>elve uegroes being
brought to turn under arrest, charged with
having engaged in a riot. All are in jail.
Are Bur ev (colored) was found guilty of
putting obstructions on the Savannah,
Americus and Mon gomery railro .and. He
was sent to the penitentiary for eight
years.
There was a heavy frost this morning.

The State to Realize About $20,000
from the Sa.e of the Prcparty,
Atlanta, Ga., Och 24.—The final
decree in the famous Georgia Stats
Lottery case was signed by Judge
Clark of the superior court this
morning, and this long series of litigation
is settled. Dr. Henry L. Wilson wai ap
pointed by the court commis doner to sell
the property, a correct verdict having been
agreed on last Saturday. The state will
realize about $20,000 from the property,
which has been a bone of contention in the
courts almost since the war closed.

Bavisbof.o, Ga., Oct. 24.—The gin house
'•of Thigpen & Sa iden, four miles south of
ton n, was burned Wednesday uigbt at 7
‘’o’clock, with twenty-eight bales of cotton
and 500 bushels of cotton seed. The origin
of the Ere is unknown. The loss, which
fails heavily upon the firm and their
tenants, is estimated at ?1,700.
Death From Apoplexy.
Boston, Ga., Oct. 24. —T. P. Headley, a
•ilviTsmitb, who moved here about two
months ago from Thomasvi le, was fouud
in his sho >on Jefferson s reel this fternoon
in an unconscious condition. Doctors were
called in and pronounced the trouble apo-
Elexy. He was moved to bis home, where
e died shortly afterward.
Sleep of the Soldier.
Rome, Ga.. Oot. 24.—Many survivors of
the old Eighth Georgia regiment will he
pained to learn of the death of L. L. Floyd,
a member of Companv E. Mr. Fioyd was
a good and faithful soldier, always ready
and willing to do his duty. He was a good
member of the Antioch Primitive Baptist
church.

No Money in L'bel a utts-
Minneapolis. Minn., Oct. 24.— The jury
in the libel eui, of Ig ialius Donnelly
against the Pioneer Press for 1100,000
damages to-night brought in a verdict giv
ing Don eliy |1 and allowing him Jo for
counsel fees.
The trial has been pro 1 ably the most
famous in the legal annals of the northwest.
Ignatius Don nelly, the fara us author aud
former member of congress ale der in the
farmers’alliance, sued the Pioneer Press
tor SIOO,OOO actual damages n account of
the publication Feb. 16, I->GI. of a letter
from Col. tV. S. King, formerly postmaster
of the House of Representatives, and a
m>n of national reputation, which letter
had been firtt publis ed in the Pioneer
press eleven years previously, alleging the
accepiance of bribes by Mr. Donnelly.
With the exceptions of Coi. King and C.
P. Huntington all the people wh > could have
he and the newspaper are dead. Mr. Doune.ly
expiai ed that lie received money for his
se vices as attorney ad as to that paid out
by him when a candidate for the United
States Senate, be said it was mo ey loaued.
The case was re luced t > a questi n of the
credibility ot Col. King and Mr. Donnel y,
which the jury had to decide The jury
stood at one time 11 to 1 in favor of the
Pioneer Press, and after three hours gave
merely nominal damages.
