TO COMPLETE THE SYSTEM.
Work on the Electrical Railway Lines
to Benin at Once.
President J. 8. Collins said yesterday that
the work of completing the Electrical Rail
way Company’s belt will commenoe as soon
as the rails can be got here.
Work will commence at South Broad and
Montgomery streets and the track w;Il be
laid to West Broad, out West Broad to
Roberts, on Roberts to Cemetery, thence
to liwinnett, to Burroughs, to
Puffy. on Duffy to Cemetery
and to the cemetery gate,
then back again to Duffy and across the
city on Duffy to Price to connect there with
tbe present line. The total distance to be
bnilc to complete the belt is about three
miles*
president Collins said he thinks it will
take about three weeks to get the material
on the ground. He expects to complete the
road within sixty days after work is begun.
After the belt is oompleted tba line to the
Central railroad wharf will be built.
The rails hare been purchased for the
connection between the electric railway and
the Savannah and Isle of Hope railroad on
Anderson street and Waters road and work
will commence as soon as Capt D. G.
Purse returns from his tour out west.
At a recent meeting of the directors of
tbe Savannah Real Estate, Loan and
Building Company the president and fi
nance committee were authorized to pro
ceed with the arrangements to complete the
electric railway system.
A DAY FALL SO FAR.
One or Two Good Rains Will Made Dp
the Deficiency, Though
The fall season so far has been a remarkably
dry one. The last of August the rainfall
for the year was oxaotly normal. To-day
there Is a deficiency of 5.14 inches.
Sinoe Aug. 31 there has fallen only 6.35
Inches, of which 2.69 inches fell in Septem
ber, 2.46 in October, 1.10 inches in Novem
ber. There was a deficiency of 3.58 iuches
in the September rainfall and of 1.32 inches
in the October rainfall.
The usual normal for November is 2.19
inches, so if there are one or two good rains
before the eud of the m >nth there will be
no doficienoy for this month. It is very
probable that there will be rain this week.
The long dry season has beeu very favora
ble to the early maturing and tbe harvest
ing of the cotton crop. No such favorable
season was calculated upon, aud conse
quently lower estimates of the ootton crop
were made than tho present heavy receipts
would aDpear to warrant.
While there is no growing crop to injure
there is a general complaint from the
country around at tho continued dry
weather. Fall planting of grain has proba
bly been considerably interfered with.
OSANGTS BEGINNING TO M3VF.
The Beet Fruit Not Yet Leoolved in the
Savannah Market.
The orange crop is beginning to move.
The local dealers report a fair demand and
good prices. "Windfalls” are bringing $1 75
to 12 a box, and 176 e $2 25 a box.
All of the oranges received hero so far
havo been small, and, until the late cold
spell, sour. This was because th-y were
‘ ‘windfalls,” which are always the first mar
keted. All the oranges are reported small
this year, but there is said to be a big crop
of them.
The dealers say that the small oranges,
running from 176 to 200 to the box, are pre
ferred by the trade, as the retailers can af
ford to sell them at from 20 to 35 cents a
dozen. The large oranges which fill up a box
with ninety to 100 orungee are not in favor
with the trade.
A carload of oranges that was smashed
upon the Savannah, Florida and Western
railway was being offered very cheap yes
terday, and had the effeot of slightly de
pressing the local market.
Doing His Work Well.
Observer P. H. Smyth of tho weather
bureau is receiving many compliments
upon his efficient work since taking charge
of the station here. The thoroughness
and accuracy of Mr. Smyth’s work
has given great satisfaction, and tbe
promptness with whioh the morning and
evening bulletins have been furnished has
been very gratifying to business men. The
Morning Nkws is also indebted to Mr.
Smyth for the dally weather bulletins and
for the full and accurate reports
furnished by him of tbe daily movements
of the weather. Mr. Smyth’s predictions
have beeu generally verified since assuming
the duties of the station, and the exceptions
have been very infrequent, Savaunah is
fortunate in having a man as capable as
Mr. Smyth in charge of the weather bu
reau.

The cutting off of the electric lights on
the circuit on which the Morning Nkws is
located put the business houses aud offices
in that part of the city in darkness for an
hour last night. Candles and lamps were
Drought into requisition. The cutting off of
tne light was caused by the breaking of e
wire on the Bay street circuit.
A RECOLLECTION OF WAR DAYS.
A Letter from Ono of Savannah’s As

• C. P. Kosßignol received a letter from
Maj. John F. McGuire of Clinton, la., in
which there are some things that may
be of interest to war time Savannahians.
Maj McGuire was assistant provost

times after the war, and is doubtless well
remembered by many residents of the city
now. rhe letter which is given below was

The Richmond and Danville to Put it
on as boon as Travel Warrants.
General Passenger Agent Taylor of the
Richmond and Danville is at the De Soto.
He is in the city on his regular inspection
trip of the ticket offices, and will be here
until to-night.
Mr. Taylor told a Mobnino Nkws re
porter last night that the Richmond and
Danville’s fast tourist train from the north,
together with the tourist ratal, is becoming
quite popular, and travel is increasing
rapidly over iu line.
It is the intention of the Richmond and
Danville, said Mr. Taylor, to show the ad •
vantagas of Savannah to the people of the
north aud east In a way which will make
this oity a competitor of Florida for the
tourist travel. Mr. Taylor thinks the
Richmond and Danville people will be suc
cessful in this move and that Savannah will
be a tourist canter this winter. As soon as
the travel this way warrants it, Mr. Taylor
said, a vestibule train will ba put on direct
from New York to Savauuali.
Mr. Taylor said there never has been any
intention on the part of the Central to turn
its northern passengers over to the South
B und at Columbia. If any passengers wish
to come that way they will be agreeably
transferred, but it wonld be a silly thing
for the Richmond and Danville to abandon
its own line from Columbia to Augusta to
help any other road. The tourist time will
be the same as that of the Atlantic Coast
Line.
THE RIVER AND HARBOR.
It will be well fer vessel owners and mas

distinctly visible. The smallest letter used
shall not be less in size thau four incnee.
The penalty is 119 for each name omitted.

RAIL AND CHOSSTIE.
The Central railroad passenger train
from Atlanta did not arrive until 10:40
o’clock last night—four hours late. The
engine broke down near Macon and there
was a delay until another engine could be
secured.
J. T. Medlin, who has been chief olerk at
tho Savannah, Florida and Western rail
way freight depot, at Gainesville, Fla., for
the past two years, hat been promoted to
assistant Inspector of agencies, in the place
of C. G. MoCfanie, resigned.
A rousing railroad meeting was held at
Gainesville, Fla, Wednesday, by the citizens
of Gainesville, Lake Butler aud LaCrosse,
for tbe extension of the Georgia Southern
and Florida railroad front either Lake But
ler or Sansom City to Gainesville. A com
mittee of three from eaoh place was ap
pointed to furnish estimates of the costs of
constructing the line and find out bow much
will be donated along each route.
Daniel J. Mullaney has been appointed
general traveling passenger agent of the
Western and Atlantic railroad, with head
quarters at Jacksonville. This place has
beeu created on acoount of a traffic arrange

The Pennsylvania Railroad Company has
announced its series of personally conducted
tours to Florida. The dates fixed are Jan.
19, Feb. 2,16, March 1,15 and 29. The party
will travel by special train of Pullman
sleeping and dining cars and they will go
through via the Atlantic Coast Line on fast
schedule. The tourist agents will oondurt
each tour in both directions, except that
passengers on tho last tour will return inde
pendently by regular trains. Tho tickets

which has a longer return limit. The special
train will leave Philadelphia at 11:50
o’clock a. m., stopping at Wilmington,
Baltimore and Washington, arriving at
Jacksonville next evening.
Cutting Up the Fark Walks.
Editor Morning News: Please call the
attention of the proper authorities to the
reckless manner in which the composition
walk along the Park extension Is being cut
up by heavy trucks hauling the new water
pipes. A couple of planks placed over the
walk for the wheels of the truck to run upon
would obviate the destruction of an im
provement which has cost the taxpayers of
the city a considerable sum. Citizbn.

SMILING THROUGH GRIEF
In Spile of the Worries Which all W omen
Hare, They \ppear Well tnl Happy— How
to Make this Apparent Happiness Real.
“Yes," said aa eminent physician recently,
"I do not think I exaggerate when I say that one
half of the Buffering an 1 sickness which exists
among women might and should be avoided.
“How f Listen and I will tell you. Pains and
weakness and the little cares, which no man
other than a physician suspects, frequently
combine to make women more or less miserable.
Yet they come up smiling nearly always,
hiding beneath their seeming happiness an in
finity of mental and phys'eal torture. This is
all wrong. Woman was born to brightness and
happiness; she needs strength to resist her
many trials. Her body, her mind and all her
faculties and functions must be put into a
healthy condition or she cannot secure strength;
and where nature falls she must be assisted.
Here is where stimulants prove so valuable.
“Yes, I mean spirits; but not the spirits of the
saloon: aDd while I recommend whiskey as the
beet and most useful of spirits I am
always most careful to Impress upon my
patients the necessity of ootaioing it absolutely
pure, as impure whiskey Is worse than useless.”
It has been agreed by the leading scientists and
physicians of the day that Duffy’s Pure Malt
Wliia-ev is absolutely pure. The proper use
of it Will strengthen the nerves, blood and body.
It is not a beverage, but is designed for medical
use. It stimulates all the faculties of the body
and mind, adds energy and strength and builds
up waste tissue. It inav be obtained from vour
drugglit or grocer. In justioe to yourself see
that you obtain the genuine Duffy 's Pure Malt
Whiskey, and do not be satisfied wim any sub
stitute which may be offered as just as good.
