MATHEMATICS IN MEDICINE.
A Dubious New System. But the Fee
Is All Right.
From Harper't Bazar.
He was a doctor of the advanced school.
He laid his finger on my pulse, and, with
his watch in his hand, gave It a fair start,
and observed it carefully all of the way
round. “Strong, 74,” he said in a moment.
Then he consulted a card that was oovered
with figures, and continued: “That equals
“3," and he placed that number on a slate.
Put out your tongue. Goodl That is 814,”
e said.
“Inches?” I asked.
“How is your appetite?” he inquired,
ignoring my question,
“Equal to the supply.”
“That makes 2J4,” he replied.
“Can’t you reduce it a little?” I asked, but
failed to get his attention.
“Cold feet?”
‘'Yes,” I answered.
“Three,” he said.
“No. 2,” I replied, to correot him.
He set the three under the other figures.
He then placed a thermometer in my mouth,
which he afterward consulted in connection
with the card. “A good 198,” he said.
“Impossible 1” I suggested, mildly.
He wrote down the 198, and asked if I had
heada hes?
“Sometimes in the morning, after being
kept late at the office,” I answered.
"Four,” he said.
“Isn’t that rather low?” I asked.
“Do you smoke?” he inquired.
“Yes.”
“Ten,” he replied.
"No, 2 for 10,” I said.
He put kown the 10.
“Do you sleep well?” he asked,
“That depends upon the baby,” I an
swered.
“We won’t consider that,” he said.
“You had better call it 980,” I suggested.
He added together the figures that he had
placed on the slate. “That makes 490,” he
said.
"Is that the amount of the bill f ” I asked.
“Bill!” he replied. “That is the number
of the prescription. I want you to know
that medioine with me is no longer an ex
periment, for I have reduced it to a mathe
matical certainty. Every aymptom has its
number, and the sum of these numbers in
dicates the medicine that is needed. I have
worked for fifteen years in formulating my
prescriptions and perfecting the treatment,
but 1 have it now. Your bill is |10.”
I understood that number, and left the
offioe feeling relieved and deeply impressed
by the doctor’s learning.
A wife whose husband has a bulging brain
And homely face used to try to make things
pleasant at home by exp.-e sing her admiration
of bin talents and giving him the pet name of
“Brains.” says the Chicago Journal. Her
delicate flattery did not seem to hare much in ■
flu“nce upon him, though she Kept it for
a whole year after their marriage. One
time, not long ago, when sho was in
a happy frame or melting mood, or
meditative state, she expressed her admiration
of his comely countenance, and at last went so
far aa to say sho would give him the pet name
of "Beauty.’’ He shilled as she repeated the
word with a full consciousness that she had
touched his weak point. And now, whatever
be his mood of mind or the vicissitudes of life,
that word dispels all other thoughts and the
twain are happy.

'Twas Whispered Soft and Low.
In one corner of a large, bare room, In which
the chairs are ranged primly 'round the walls,
says the St. Louis Republic, sits Nita rolling
pudgy cigarettes from a pile of Buetra Abaio
tobacco and white rice papers. She can hardly
see to tuck in the ends with her bone bodkin for
the tears that persisted in filling her dark eyes.
She turns quickly os a voice from the bed of
straw in an opposite corner feebly calls:
"Nita.”
“Yes, Josef.”
"Has the padre come yet?”
“No, dear. He will soon be here."
"Do you know, little sister," exclaimed he,
“that Ido not think 1 shall see him when he
comrg. It is very near."
“What Is near, my pretty one?"
“Heaven, Nita.”
A sob shakes her bosom and she goes to his
side and presses her warm, living hands on his
cold forehead.
“Nita, darliog," continues he, “do you re
member when our littlo mother was here how
she would [dace her hands on thy head and on
my head men the day was gone and we were
ready for rest?
“And do you remember the pictures we used
to look at in the big book ? The angels with
their great wide wings; the floods of dazzling
light; the gr at, golden throne witn the mighty
king sealed* on it: the musicians with their
cymbals and drums and castanets? Do you re
member, Nita?”
“Yes, my sweet one. Do you see all that?”
"No. I see nothing; but it is as it was when
maraata was here with her hands about us at
the close of day. I hear music, but it is not the
clashing of cymbals. It is a little song, An old
song. Nita, it is the lullaby mamaita used to
sing to us. Soft aDd low. Soft and low. Do
you not hear it? Listen!”
She makes no answer, for her face Is buried
in the straw, and her frame is shaken with a
storm of woo.
"Kiss me, Nita.” whispers the hoy. “Kiss me.
The lullaby is finished, and I must go to rest.
Kiss me—good nignt.’’
She passionately presses her red lips to his
pallid ones, and then he sighs, hil heart stops
its beating and he Is dead.
As the girl lifts her hea l she sees in the open
door the black-robed padre, with hands clasped
and eyes downcast in prayer.
"O, father,” she says, reproachfully, “yon
came too late to give him absolution.”
The eyes of the good man are raised and he
