To-day ushers in Christmas week. Yes
terday's weather is a sample of about what
most towns and cities get on Christmas,
but it is not what Savannah is accustomed
to. The weather observer says the proba
bility is that the present spell will pass off
in a day or two, and Christmas wili be clear
a id cool.

realizing and In spite of “hard times” and
•■dull times” it will be pretty rnuoh the same
Christmas as usual.
The rush of holiday buying will be on In
full fore* the four days of this week pre
ceding the great festival. A great deal of
it has been done already, however, and the
malls are beginning to be heavy with quan
tities of small and mysterious packages ad
dressed to distant points. Tbo-e in nearby
places will begin to pour In this week.

Postmaster Doyle says there has been a
rush at the registry and money order de
partments of the otlloe for the last two
weeks and the clerks are sxpecting to have
all they can bold np under for the next four
days. Ho matter how hard times are peo
ple will always find money for Christmas.

of packages by mail, especially
Christmas presents, which are desired to
reach thair destination promptly. Always
be sure to have the package securely
wrapped and fasteusd with material that
will not break or tear readily. Write ihe
address plainly in the lower right-hand
corner, arid as a precaution put the address
of the sender in the upper left-hand corner.
Send no largs amounts of money through
the mails except by mousy order or by
registered lettor. There is absolutely no
way of traoing money lost in a regular
letter,
*HE EXPRESS COMPANY.
The Southern Express Company’s busi
ness has Increased greatly within the last
two weeks. The holiday branch office of
the oorupany on Broughton street in the
Lovell building is doing a good business
already. All oity deliveries will be made
from the Broughton street office daring the
holidays, and all goods for shipment will be
received at the main office on Johnson
square.
Among the articles already moving by
expries ure large uumbrrs of boxes of
oranges. Those moving tblU early ore going
to friends at h -me and it dogsti’t matter if
they arrive a day or two ohoad of time, or
they are going to distant points north and
west and require several day* iu Srausit.
Oranges are aheap this year and good
oranges can be had from $ L 50 to $2 a box.
The dealers say tney are receiving large
orders for boxes to be sent out this week.
A more acceptable present than a box of
oranges could hardly be Imagined.
The school ohildren will be turned loose
for the holidays. The reboots wHI close at
noon Wednesday, and will remain closed
until the first Monday iu January. This
will give the ohildren ton days holiday, a
longer holiday thau their parents will have,
but Christmas is the children's festival and
they should enjoy it if any one should.

The Rifle Club to Spend Christmas In
Guyton.
At the last meeting of the Pooler
Rifle Club It was decided to postpone the
club’s usual Christmas turkey shoot to Hew
Year's day, as the club intends to spend the
day in Guyton as guests of the Minuts Men.
It wae thought that only a delegation of
four or five of the beet shots would go, but
it seems that quite a number have signified
their intention of being in the crowd. The
Central authorities have put on exoursion
rates, 4 osnts per mile round trip, making
tue price of tickets 81 cents. All members
who intend going to Uuy ton will meet at the
station in time to take the 8:20 a. m. train,
as that is the only train from Savannah
which passes Guyton in the morning.
In the wholesale discharge of railroad men
which took place last week. Pooler cer
tainly received her share. Coming at this
season of the year, it is a hard blow to some
of them. Several Poelerites who have been
discharged have boon lu t a employ of the
road for the past twenty odd years, and now
that they have grown old In the service of
the company they are dropped out. It will
be difficult for some of them to got now
places now, as young bleod is always given
the preferanoe and old men are pushed to one
side. The storekeepers In Pooler feel tbs
effect of the discharge more than any oua
else, aud they express a hope that It will
not last long.
At last arrangements are being made
whereby the waltiag room at too station
will be opened early to the morning to ac
commodate toe “lightning express” passen
gers. It is understood that a key is to be
given to T. A. llendricken, nephew of Bar
ney McDonald, who will be on hand every
morning to let the people in. Stoves have
been placed in position, and fire can be
made, so as to have a comfortable place to
get into during a wait in bad weather.
Complaint was made last Tuesday morn
ing by the ladies who went to Savannah on
the shoofly that the stepping stools were not
put out. The stools ore carried on the trains
for such use. The distance fro a the ground
to the first oar step is from 15 to 38 inches,
according to where the trains stop (and
they never stop in the same place twice).
There is no platform to step from and it is
very trying on a lady to have to haul her
self up a couple of feet to get on the first
step of the platform when she knows there
is a stepping stool inside the car.
Pooler certainly has a good guesser in

A Little Colored Girl’s Unaccountable
Disappearance.
A little 7-vear-old colored girl disap
peared In the neighborhood of Gwinnett
and West Broad streets Thursday afternoon
and has not been heard from since.
The child Is the daughter of Tara Aikens
of Decatur, and camo to Ssvannah with
her mother a few days ago to spend Christ
mas with J. H. Mvers, a waiter at the
Here veil house. Myers it a brother of the
Aikens womau. The child was plaving

Inspector Deavergers of the Citizens’ San.
•tary Association, in his report of inspec
tions of foed produce In the Savannah mar
ketfor the week ending last nignt, says
that dressed beef, dressed mutton, dressed
pork and dressed venison made an excellent
average in quality. Dressed poultry, game,
nsb, oysters and clams made a good aver
oge. Also pickled beef, pickled trir.e,
pickled tonguee and pickled pigs’ feet
corned beef and oorned pork, sau ages and
meat puddings Green vegetables and such
green fruits as bananas, oranges and grapes
also made an excellent average.
