Usw York. Jan. 16.—People who are
ti'esned j-;ih common sonte have no idea
wbat {o. Is there are in the world, nor how
oaiiy of mem there are.
j bere are fools of all kinds, and when
they become very foolish they are known
J cranks and are sent to Bloomingdale or
elsewhere for safe-keeping.
There are fools, you know, who have aJ
idea that aU the money in the world should
Uloßg to them, and they are ready to kill
„, r le if it isn’t banded over promptly
M the dynamiter. Norcross was ready
Jo kill Russel Sage. Then there ore fools
bo have started out to reform the world,
is rtli£ loa and politics and social laws and
in morality. Such fools are speedily appre
hended and are put soras where out of
hara'i * ay.
gat there is a certain olass of fools even
Bore abundant than any of the others that
have been mentioned, whioh are perhaps
ocra troublesome than any of these, and
which, it is to be regretted, do not very
often get their just deserts. These fools are
tbe ones who make levs to society girls with
whom they have no acquaintance aud fol
lowV ow and torment them until the poor
vouug women are ready to die of mortiflea-
U gJimetimes these queer fools have been
jnccesaful enough to got a bona fide intro
duction to the young lady, and In that case
tbs: e is really no end to taslr persecutions,
for they are, after a fashioD, privileged to
speak to her and pay her some little atten
tioa. More often they are entirely un
known and tbe first intimation that tbe
voung woman has of her adorer is brought
to her by meauß of billet-doux, bouquets
and love tokens, whioh shower upon her at
all times of day and night.
Up at a verys well houee on Fifth avenue
was a luncheon party held a few days ago,
and ome of the society girls present were
tailing their experience with strange men
who had become enamored of them. Among
those present was a young relative of Gov.
Flower, New York’s by-a-large-majority
governor. The young woman is rioa, tal
acted and very pretty. Some years ago
s -e had this misfortune to meet abroad a
to-called count, who paid her some little
attentiou while she was on the other side,
and who, when she returned, came over to
this country and renewed his BUit.
Tbe young woman, with unusual good
west; for an American girl, was not at
tract'd by the title of countess and did not
cate for the foreign representative of tbe
noble family to which he claimed to belong.
Accordingly, as soon as she saw that the
counts attention was becoming too pointed
she gave him what we iu America would
call ‘‘ttseold shake.”
But tbe count was persistent, and, when
be bad tried all bis loving arts in vain, he
became ugly and swore that he would get
even with the young woman, even If ho had
to kill her to do so.
One evening the count was announced
and, before the young woman had time to
enter the drawing room, a pistol shot rang
through the house and the unhappy oount
lay bleeding in the hallway from a pistol
St >t through the temples. Weill the shot
bad gone a little astray from the place
where too count intended It should lodge,
and it did not prose fatal And the story
never got into the papers.
Hastily summoning the policeman on the
block the family of the young woman gave
him a largo sura to keep tho matter quiet
ar.d to assist in having tee count removed
to a hospital. The cab driver and others
who assisted in removing him were like
wise '•filed” with the mightv dollar and no
one was any wiser for ttie affair. Ones in a
hospital, all went well. The count was put
in a private room and the young woman’s
family paid all the expenses of a long and
tedious sickness and convalescence. The
hospital authorities made no inquiries Into
tho affair, uud w hen the count recovered he
w*s given money to go back to his native
land and solace himself as best he could
wit i one of his own country women.
By this clever bit of management the
young woman waa saved from an unenviable
piece of notoriety, and the family name
was not dragged into the newspapers by
means of a miserable bit of scandal.
In telling the story, the young woman
sail that she was always quite sure that
the young man became so Infatuated with
her upon a certain occasion when she acted
88 it wer girl at a charity bazar. The dress
which stio wore was exceedingly pretty and
very becomiug to her, and the count, never
having seen anything of the kind before,
was completely infatuated.
A story is told of Miss Bailie Hargous
now the beautiful Mrs. Duncan Elliott. It
happened so runs the story, long ag > in the
ola days whe i Miss Hargous used Cos go to
Saratoga instead of to Newp rt for the long

“ “ more disagreeable than any of these
experiences warihe trouble which a cer
i tain young wdiaa had with a wealthy
youug society van who made her acquaint
j ance at Lenox and who courted her there
assiduously irspiteof all her efforts to pre
| vent him. "De young woman legs that her
name shoulr not be mentioned. And so,
out of regard for herself, and the young
man, who ias since outgrown his passion,
the uamesare withheld.
Tbe yp*ng people were visiting at one of
tbe palaial residences which uiuke Lenox
the hanlsomest country place in America,
aud thy were thus thrown constantly into
each rther’s society. The young man was
several years tbe junior of the young
wonan, and so his affections seemed to her
of tie type which is vulgarly kuowu as the
••c.lf love.”
, From the first he was desperately enam
red of her, and morning, noon and night
he besieged her with attentions. Notes,
love letters and sonnets were showered upon
her like a snow storm, and ere she was awake
in the morning there would oo.ne a gentle
tap at her door, to which her maid would
respond, only to receive a handful of love
letters, which were brought to the door by
the young man’s valet, who had mercifully
retrained from bringing them at all hours
of the night when they wore written. Later
would come another snow storm of love
letters, followed by boxes of candy, straw
baskets, “views” and everything obtainable
at Lenox.
The young man was almost demented
with the force of his love, and he pleaded
and implored and even demanded that the
young woman give him her promise of
marriage.
One day, quite wearied with his attentions,
she strolled out to a little arbor where there
was a rustic seat. And there, dropping
wearily into a shady corner, she congratu
lated herself upoa her success in escaping
for a few moments from hor adorer. But
alas! Scarcely had she had time to com
pose herself, when the blighted young
creature appeared, and, seating himself by
her side, renewed his suit with more than
usual ardor. Suddenly clasping his hands
in front of him, he said, with an earnest
ness which left no doubt as to his sin
cerity :
“I swear to you, Mss Dora, that unless
you consent to marry me, I will never per
mit you to go out of this summer house
alive, nor will I leave it mvself with the
breath of life in me.”
Half Beared to death tha young woman
collected her wits as beat she could, and
and said quietly:
“Now, you must beliove evory word I am
going to say to you. It Is not my custom
to say what is not true. I cannot promise
to marry you, but I give you my word of
honor that I will give you a fair chance to
win me. And I will promise to engage
myself to no one else for at least a year to
come.”
The young man was pacified, and the
youug woman lived to tell the story and to
add how the followi Beason brought about
a change of heart In the young man, so that
now he is comfortable and happy without
her.
These are just a few instances of the
troubles that society girls have had with
adorers, but if all the stories were told it
would be as interesting as an Arabian Nights
tala. Carrie Careless.
HIS UNLUCKY NUMBER.
The Sick Man Who Was Pursued to
Death by the Mysterious 13.
From the Detroit Free Press.
There was a commotion in the hotel when
the Denver stage came In, and the men who
were playing poker in the barroom and the
loafers who were waiting for somebody to
treat hurried to see what was up.
“There’s a siok traveling man. He’s awful
bad and can’t go any farther. Fix him up
a bed and send for a doctor," someone in
authority was saying.
There was plenty of volunteers to help
aarry the sick man to a room, and soon a
temporary nurse was installed and a doctor
in charge of the case.
There was nothing unusual about it. He
wasn’t the first sick man that had stranded
there, and would not be the last. The only
curious thing about him was this: He heard
the laudlord say:
"Take him into 13."
"No, no,” he said feebly, "that is an un
lucky number to me—don’t put me there."
"All right,” said the landlord, “give him
18, that’s empty.” Aud the men bore him
carefully upstairs.
But the landlord had winked to those who
had him la charge, and they had responded
by an answering wl.ik, which said in dumb
show, "All right, we understand.”
So they carried him into the room with
the unlucky number, and he, having faith
in the man he had appealed to, askel no
questions. Indeed, he could not, for as
they carried him into the room he swooned,
and they had enough to do, with the doctor's
help, to revive him.
Then ho dozed and started up in feverish
deiirum, and called for people who were
far away, and raved and muttered. And
the landlord was laughing down at the bar,
tailing of his good joke in deceiving the
sick man.
“Ho'll never know the dlff’rence," he
said. “I ain’t no patience with such super
stitions, and what the aye don’t see the heart
don’t feel Here’s health and long life to
the stranger in No. 13.”
They clinked glasses and drank.
The noise of their carousal penetrated
the room above, where death wrestled with
life in an unequal encounter.
“Wbat time is it?”
The sick man had wakened suddenly.
and us he asked the question the clock on
tbe meiitel began to strike the hour.
“One, two, three, four," he counted the
strokes aloud.
The nurse tried to dissuade him from
speaking by shaking her head in disapproval
and laying a Auger on her lips, but he per
sisted and had his way.
“Five, six, seven, eight ”
Tho doctor held bis finger on the sick man’s
pulse and felt as accelerated thrill In its ir
regular boat. The sick man's voice con
tinued :
“Nine, ten, eleven, twelve
“Midnight,” said the doctor, giving the
nurse a warning look.
“Thirteen 1”
“The clock struck one too many; it is out
of order,” grumbled the nurse.
"It has stopped," said the doctor, taking
his finger from the pulse, to whioh he re
ferred. "Strange! I did not think the end
waa so rear.”
Neither did the landlord, who had just
wished the traveler long life.
I?ut the clock that struck one too many
had been the strange instrument of fata.
Whkn James Russell Lowell was ministfr to
England Lord Granville ouce anted him to dine,
saying; "It Is absurd to give so short a notice to
the most engaged man in London." The poet
replied: “The most engaged man in London is
very glad to dine with the most engaging one.
