A possible lynching.
John Jenkins May Dang-le From a
Chattahoochee County Tree.
From lA< Columbia {(7a.) EnquiVer-sim.
John Jenkins, a negro with rather an un
savory reputation, was arrested Thursday
morning on Broad street, locked up in the
barracks until noon and then taken to Chat
tabooobee county, where be stands an ex
cellent chance of being lynched.
The crime for which Jenkins was ar
rested w committed last Tuesday night on
T. M. Faikman's plantation, about twelve
nnlee from Columbus. Tuesday morning
Mr. Parkmao was forced to leave his home
for a day. ami Mr*. M. F. Uumaway and
Mrs. James, his mother-in-law and sister,
were left unprotected in the house. Mr.
Farkman felt no uneasiness whatever, ns
Jenkins, who worked on the place, was the
only man who knew of his departure. When
he returned Wednesday, however, he found
that his confidence had been misplaced and
the ladies had passed through a terrible or
deal.
The two ladies stated that about *2 o’clook
at night they were aroused by the sound of
voices outside their window. At first they
thought that somh one might be poising by
the house and that no harm was intended
them. A few minutes later, however, they
heard the same voices at the back door, and
then they heard a sound as if someone was
trying to force the lock. Thoroughly
alarmed, both ladies screamed loudly, and
as soon as the tnen outside found that tbeir
proseDCe was discovered they commenced
heating on the door and demanding admis
sion.
Mrs. Dutnawoy knew where her son-in
law kept a pistol, and this she secured, de
termined that as soon ns the door gave way
she would shoot at least one of the men.
In the meantime, however, the ladies opened
an upper window aud screamed for help
with all tbeir strength. The men were evi
dently frightened by the noise, but they
wore determined to break in. and their
blows were renewed with even more vio
lence than before.
Fortunately the door was made of stout
wood and the look was strong. Finally,
however, it commenced to give nay aud the
ladies heard the cracking of the plaoks
which foretold a Fpeedy end of their tempo
rary safety. Just as they had given up all
hopes of being rescued a ory was beard from
the road end immediately the two house
breakers gave up their purpose and fled.
Several of the neighbors had been aroused
and in a few minutes several good citizens
were trying to quiet the frighteoed ladles
and at the same time laying plans to catch
the criminals and make of them such an ex
ample that such crimes would become rare
la Chattahoochee county.
The next morning Mr. Parkman re
turned, and when he was told what had
happened he was naturally furious. He at
ouce suspected Jot.king as being one of the
men because he knew that several days ago
Mrs. Dumsway hsd drawn her pension as a
confederate soldier’s widow, ana be thought
that the crime may have been insighted by
the hope of obtaining the money. He had
no doubt, bowover, that a worse crime thau
robbery had been oontemplateij.
Jenkins was about the place as usual. and
toward noon Mr. Parkman told him to go
down In the field to do some work. Jenkins
went a little way and then said be had for
gotten his knife, aud would go back for it.
When he thought he was out of sight he
took to his heels and made for the wood*.
Mr. Farkman and a friend went in pursuit,
but they failed to capture the fugitive.
Mr. Farkman came to Columbus yester
day morning, and on Broad street he saw
Jenkins strolling about quite unconcern
edly. Officer Dunbar was standing on the
corner and Mr. Parkman demanded Jenk
ins’ arrest. At the station house the prisoner
refused to make any statement. He was,
however, locked up until noon, when Mr.
Farkman started with him for Chattahoo
chee county.
It was openly stated that unless the pris
onercould prove conclusively his innocence,
he will soon be hanging from the branch of
a tree.
