Atlanta Herald : Two guns that were
not loaded nearly caused the death of Wil
lie I’arkhurßt, the son W. F. Parkhmst.
The boy who did the shooting was Hugh
JBrown. son of C. I- Brown. Several boys
were at Willie Parkhurst’s home shootiug
English sparrows. Hugh Brown had a
Remington rlffe, and several boys had guns
of smaller caliber. Tired of play the boys
began looking around for something more
exciting, Knowing that the gun he had in
bis possession was empty, Willie Parkhurst
called out to Hugh Brown in a joking way:
Hugh, let’s have a duel,” and suiting
bis action to bis words, young Parkhurst
threw the parlor rifle to his shoulder and,
taking deliberate aim at Hugh, snapped the
trigger. As deliberately, thinking his gun
unloaded, did Hugh aim the Remington at
>V illia Parkhurst’# heart. The trigger was
pulled aud a leaden ball was released from
Its don. When the gun went off
.Parkhurst threw his hands to his
heart and fell to the ground. As
Boon as the boys recovered from their
fright aid was summoned and an examina
tion made. It was found that the life of
young Parkhurt had been saved by a sus
pender buckle. The buckle was directly
ever the boy’s heart, and the bullet, striking
the metal, deviated from its course, and,
striking a rib, glanced away from that
fatal part. The attending phvsicians have
us yet been unable to locate the bull, but
think that It very possibly did not enter
the cavity, as there Lave been no hemor
rhages.
The Americus 7'im.es-Rccorder contains
tbefollowlng fuller account of the killing
of John L. Adams thnu that already printed
In the News. John L. Adams of ripping
received injuries that will prove fatal, near
Alley Station on the Bam road, Bundav,
Adams took the east-bound passenger train
Bunday, Ho alighted at Alley with the
intention of boarding tho train before i.t
pulled out. He was not careful, however,
ond got left. Ho jumped the next train
which passed the station going
in the same direction. The
conductor came out on the plat
form of the r< ar car where Adams was
standing, to collect his fare. The young
man pulled out a roll of bills, and wns about
to hand him the money, when a $5 bill was
blown out of his hand, and fluttered down
the track. Adams seemed to lose his head
at this juncture and deliberately jumped
off the car for the purpose of recovering bis
money. That leap was a terrible one, how
ever, and will cost tbe young man bis life.
His bead struck violently against
one of the ties, crushing his skull lu
several places. The train was
stopped and kind-hearted people proceeded
to the spot where he lay. YVhen they drew
pear a horrible signt met their eves. Tbe
man was totally unoonscious and bis brains
had been scattered by the force of hts fall
upon the oroHsties. lie was picked up and
carried to Mount Vernon, where medical
assistance was promptly summoned. At
latt accounts he was still alive, but his
death is momentarily expected.
Atlanta Herald: Kivu Cbinameu ham
mered their emaciated list! against the bus
of a cell at the |<olics station Tuesday morn
ing aud cussed out tho police force la their
ungodly gibberish. Their trouble was all
earned by a diminutive Chinaman named
Cbing Bing. The crowd was ruu in on a
charge cf residing an officer, with the ex
ception of CbiDg Bing, who was arrested
for larceny. A year ago a Chinaman
named Leon was laid to re*t in Oakland
cemetery. He had reformed and becjms a
Caristian and was buried by
a minister of the Episcopal church.
Fourteen years before Leon married an
lii-h woman and his widow now lives m a
shanty on Marietta street. Their only off
spring was a girl who has developed into
one of tho meet I eautiful girls that man’s
eyes ever rested upon. Since the demise of
her spouse Mrs. Leon has become rather
lax in regard to her morals, so the police
people say, and her home has become the
rendezvous of the Chinamen of Atlanta in
general. The young girl, who has nothing
noticeable at all of the Chinesein her, seems
to be the attraction that draws the Celes
t al-eved opium eaters to the Leon home.
Kunday night Cbing Bing wa* a visitor
there. After his departure Mrs. I-eon
missed a valuable ring. Kho notified the
police and last night Bing was located on
Marietta street. The officer who found him
attempted to arrest the Chiaaman when be
wns set upou by four other Celestials and
for a few minutes is looked as though the
p liceman would get the worst of it. As
sistance came to him, however, and the
Chinamen were secured and taken to the
station bouse. An effort is being made to
get the youug girl, who is the center of the
story, away from the vicious company by
which she is now surrounded.

rapidity the fire swept through the woods,
licking up all before it, and into the pine

a great effort the hommock grove and oth
