was sent Saturday.
Annie Searcy, for whom Sheriff Morrow
of Fulton county and bis assistants have
been looking ever since the grand jury
found a true bill against her for arson, was
located at Maocn on Saturday. The matter
was reported to Chief Connolly and the au
thorities at the Central city wired to arrest

have flown, however, for the Macon police
bars thus far failed to find “Dutch Annie.’’
Atlanta Knights Templar hare received a

that place of Sir Knight John 8. Town. It
explains that be is supposed to be suffering
from mental aberration. He wandered
from there Feb. 10, was seen Feb. 16 and
has never been heard of since. He is de

title of a full fledged major. Under the
new military tactics each regiment has
two majors, anti an election for the new
place is soon to take plaoe in the third.
There is not a better military man in the
state than Guinn. The high standard of ex
cellence of the Third regin ent, then the
Ninth, displayed at Cbickamauga last sum
mer was in a large measure due to Adj.
Gulnu’s enthusiasm and military capacity.
Mrs. Mauldin, the wife of Miller D.
Mauldin, of the Fenley Furniture Company
of Atlanta, met with a very sudden death
Sunday. She lived on West Third street,
near Ponders avenue. Sunday ehe arose
apparently in the best of health, and went
about her household duties as usual. At 8
o’clock Mr. Mauldin left her to go to a
neighbor’s. He returned a half hour later
and found his wife lying dead on the
kitohen floor. He was shocked at the dis
covery, and Immediately a suspicion of foul
play entered his mind. An investigation,
however, seemed to disprove that theory,
and it is thought that heart disease was tne
cause of death. She was a young woman,
and the affair has nearly prostrated her
husband.
Atlanta Herahl: Store Ryan is not ex
pecting an early releaae from Fulton jail.
In fact, be expects to remain In his de
cidedly close quarters for Are or six years.
The motion which is to be made in his case
next Saturday does not affect in the least
the question of his further incarceration.
That motion is simply to test the validity of
the mortgages given by Ryan to others.
His contempt case must first come before
the supreme court and then go through
months and months of red tape. The young
merchant prinoe was playing a solitary
game of draughts when a Jlrrnld reporter
was admitted to his quarters Monday morn
ing. The prisoner looked as solid and
healthy as ever. He is in no wav getting
soft during his confinement. Upon his en
trance to Mr. Ryan’s quarters the Herald
maa noted a pair of 0-pound dumb-bells bal
anced across the head board of the oot in
which Mr. Ryan sleeps, while in a window
was a pair of two pounders. the
young merchant told his visitor that he put
these "up” several times daily. “Suppose
you should pay this amount that they aek
me to pay in my behalf.” said Mr. Ryan, ‘ ‘I
would still be in contempt. Suppose my
relatives and friends should pay it, 1 would
not be purged of the charge. I have not got
the money. I can’t pay It and I suppose I
am In here for five or si x years any how, and
maybe for life. Why haven’t these people,”
continued the prisoner, “ever produced a
■ingle affidavit showing that my testimony
tn regard to the disposition of my money was
not correct? I have produced about 100
affidavits in support of the evidence I gave.
My testimony has not been impeached. I
haven't the money they demaud and here 1

Ryan dropped the subject and became

The Peruvian Phosphate Company of
Tampa is erecting a large new dump room,
60x24 feet and 15 feet high. This will have
a storage capacity of 1,200 tons of dried

capacity was 200 tons. The shipment of
phosphate in large quantities made the en
largement of their plant a necessity.
Palatka Times: We noticed in the shop
of Wigg & Butler, the enterprising harness
makers, od Haturday last, a noble, old
looking, cankered, small brass bell, which
has quite a history already. Mr. Wigg in

will be quite a relic in years to come.

NEWS OF OCALA.
The Revival—Third Party Talk—A
Railroad Item. .
Ocala. Fla., March 15.—The revival
services which have been in progress for four
weeks came to a cloee Sunday night in the
MGthodist church, and while the number of
converts was not numerous, the lmpreseion
left on the minds of their large audiences
was excellent.
Since the third, or Peoples', party has
taken form In this county, although mani
fested by only a handful of followers,
speculation is rife as to who will be the can
didatee for county and legislative honors.
Among the prominent ones mentioned for
the legislature are William ILcksoa and
Tom Sistrunk.
Considerable speculation is indulged in as
to whether Marion county will continue the
primary methods adopted two years ago or
whether the rural population will insist ou
the convention methods, thereby securing
a more eveu footing with Ocala in
getting their sbare in the political deal.
IVord cornea that the Florida Southern
railroad, recently purchased by the Jackson
ville, Tampa and Key West system, will
be extended from Cura south to ths phos
phate fields of Hparr and Anthony, and
that from Sparr a branch will be extended
to the Ooklawaha river at Eureka, where
very fine cypress timber aboumls. This
branch will run through the Fort McCoy
settlement, a thickly settled and good,
prosperous district.
Tdis branch will be graded, tied, right of
way given by a company of private indi
viduals, mostly interested in the develop
mentof phosphate lands and the shipment of
rock. They claim this twenty-three miles
of track can be built for $40,000, os the
country is almost level, and the Florida
Southern railrond will operate it.
It not only will give the phosphate men
of Sparr and Anthony competition by rail,
but. it is said, it will also bring into the
transportation field competition by the
Ockltfwaba river at Eureka, only ten miles
distant from Sparr. Soarr station this season
forwarded 14,000 boxes of oranges, while one
cargo of phosphate from the Peninsular
mines at that station paid freight on it to
Fercandina to the tune of $l,O 0.
Around Sparr there are live phosphate
mines in operation, while at Anthony a
dozen are getting ready to ship the stuff.
At the latter place two tracts of land,
consisting of TOO acres, have been leased at
a royalty of $1 a ton. At Sparr several
40-acre tracts were purchased at SIOO au
acre.
While at Sparr the other day we met
with a Marion county farmer who said he
made mooey at farming. It was none other
than the veteran Copt. DuPree, who, last
season, raised all the corn he used for Lis
stock, his bands and for the use of his fam
ily. In fact, bis plantation supplies his
table with all he uses, except coffse.
Among his money crop were nine hogs,
which ho fattened on pindars, and wbuee
weight ran from 150 to 630 pounds net, and
the meat was readily disposed of at from 8
to 10 cents wholesale, while the excellent
manner be has in preparing the sausage
meat and bead cheese from these animals
sells quickly at retail prices, people of this
community having standing orders with
him for these epicurean dishes.
Another crop was peanuts, of which he
sold (500 bushels at 80 cents and $1 per
bushel. He raises five or six colts each
year, while his herd of cattle brings him a
neat sum yearly. Off an acre of orange
bearing trees ho sold 040 boxes at $1 a box
on the trees. Thus the reader can easily
see that Capt. DuPree makes ends meet and
has an assuring surplus for a rainy dav,
though many farmers do not, and are
always wanting many comforts of life and
ever in financial distress.

NEARLY SHANGHAIED.
A Brunswick Man Telia of An Exciting
Experience.
Brunswick, Ga., March 15.—J. C.
Akers, a young white man of good build
but addiotod to the use of intoxicants, came
near being “shanghaied” last night At
least that Is the tale he tells, although in
vestigation does not su betantiate his story
in every detail “Shanghai” is a word
seldom beard in the interior country, and
Akers' story of the attempt to abduct him
has revived It in Brunswick. The word
applies to the practice of “shipping” men
on vessels without their consent.
As ruuoh os SBS per capita has been piia
in times past by commanders for men to
serve on their vessels. The traffic, car
ried on to suoh an outrageous extent in
nearly all seaports, culrniuated a few years
since in the shipping of a dead man in Pen
sacola, Fla. Fourteen men wero made
drunk aud drugged on the occasion
referred to, and the sailor thief in order to
get the bounty on the body threw in the
corpse, and preteuding that the man was
too drunk to stand up and write, signed tue
contraot for him and got the bounty. The
dead man was discovered by the captain
next morning aud brought ashoro by the
crew and buried. The bounty business has
been stopped so fur as the law can control
the matter.
In Brunswick about five years ago a
printer in the Brunswick News otlice disap
peared ono Friday night leaving a week’s
wages behind, and it is still thought that he
was shanghaied aud carried to a foreign port.
