A GARRISON OF WOMEN
B DBH WHACKING EXPERIENCE
XOLD BY AN EX-COMSDEBATE.
Incidents to Show How M-my of the
Confederate* Toole Upoa Themseivea
Individually to Attack Companies of
Union Infantry or Cavalry During
tlu Late War.
• 4 Jf/.Cbn/dcrafe" fn A f ew Tort Advertiser.
Connected with the late war there were
jj-gny- individual transactors which would
interest to readers of the present day
if narrated by those who teok part tu them,
faese transactions were not reported at
heaiiiu arters ttnt i there is no record of them
6a re in the memory of those who partici
pated in them. These narrations should not
necessarily beget unkind reed lections or ex*
cite feelings of animosity or hostility, and
will not in those who enacted an honorable
part in that great strife.
Actuated by these motives I propose ia
this article to place on record for the first
time my experience In some events which
transpired In the Piedmont region of Vir
ginia in the fall of 1862, at Thoroughfare
Gap, premising tny statement with the as
sertion what I have recorded is strictly
true, and that there are others, now living,
who can substantiate what I may say.
bushwhackers and bushwhacksbs.
Before proceeding further it is necessary
that I should state that there were bush
whackers and bushwhackers. Asa matter
of history, lam sure those to whom the
term of bushwhacker might be applied
throughout the whole confederacy were not
a very honorable class of soldiers and their
occupation and mode of pursuing it were not
very commendable ana would not bear
the light of exposure, but there were others
whoso circumstances and necessities com
pelled them to engage in that mode of war
fare, aud the way in which they oonduoted
it leaves nothing for them to regret nor
gives them occasion to blush at its remem
brance. .
It may not be generally known that in the
late wur the south did not furnish the sol
diers of the cavalry with horses, but re
quired them to furnish their own, for which
the government paid them about sl2 a
montu. If a soldier had his horse killed or
otherwise disabled he was compelled to sup
ply himself with another. Those who.-e
homes were in the limits of the confedera-y
conid readily accomplish this by drawing
upon stable rssources at home, but to those
whose homes were without the lines of the
confederacy it was a duty not so easily ac
complished. He had either to buy, steal or
oapture it.
TUB HAMPTON LEGION.
I bad joined the army from Maryland. I
had served the first year of the war in
the oavalry of the Hampton Legion, aud as
a Marylander was not subject to conscrip
tion and was therefore discharged from the
army. Owing to n physical infirmity I
could not serve lu the infantry, therefore I
resolved to join the cavalry.
To purchase a horse I was unable, to steal
one I nad hardly dared; but a horse I bad to
save and 1 concluded the shortest way out
ci the difficulty was to draft upon Mr. Liu
olu for one through one of his weU*
mounted cavalrymen. In accomplishing
(Ms result, I gatued the experience whioh I
am about to relate.
STATIONED AT FAUQUIER,
I-oe’s army had returned from the An
tletam campaign and was at Fredericksburg
facing the union army under Burnside.
There were no troops of either army sta
tioned in Fauquier, that region of country
being protected by scouting parties sent out
from the garrison of Washington. I con
cluded that this presented the best field for
operations of my army of one. Therefore,
I betook myself there at once.
As soon as I arrived there I was joined by
a rolative, who is still alive, and as I have
no right to make use of his name, I shall
designate by the letter F. Early iu the war
F. had manifested his Spartan and dare
devil courage, together with a most unerring
marksmanship. A year before Ueu. Ewell
had presented him with a Sharpe rifle for
his courage and 6kiU displayed in attacking,
unaided and alone, a train of cars loaded
with troops, upon the Alexandria and
Mauagsas railroad. Thoroughfare Gap,
which was owned at that time by my unole
and being upon the turnpike from Alexan
dria to Warreuton, we doomed the best
point for our operations, as it would be tho
route taken by all scouting parties passing
through that county.
THOROUGHFARE GAP.
Thoroughfare Gap was so often described
in the newspapers as to be quite familiar to
the readers of the war period. But to the
younger generation I am sure a few words
of description will not be amiss. It is a
sap la the bull Run Mountain, ten miles
from VVnrrenton, which is the county seat
of Fauquier, and eleven milos from the bat
tle field of the second battle of Manassas.
Through it passes the turnpike leading from
Aleiaadria to Warrentou. It is a deep,
narrow defile in the mountains, with Sugar
Lea: mountain on tbe right aud Biscuit
mountain ou the left as you advanoe to
TVarreuton from Alexandria. Biscuit
mountain is immediately overlooking the
pike.
In order to supply the deficiency in num>
bers.we built a fort with the loose rock lying
®° generously around. P. was armed with
bis trusty rifle and I with a Belgiau musket,
nshed up from a stream of water, where it
had been thrown by some soldier of Pope’s
retreating army.
AN IMPROVISED FORT.
This fort, which was still standing a few
years siuce, was built about breast high
w *th what may be termed two embrasures
and a portbolo below. Through this port

haded with eight fingers of powder and
twenty -seven pistol bullets. It was fired by
a lanyard attached to the trigger, with a
,8° rock placed at the butt of the stock,

ain. Though we had what might be

those toward Warren ton. When I recall
what now occurred, even to this day, it
makes my hair raise up aud cold shivers run
down my spine.
I heard the command given, “Cross
over,” and immediately the portion of the
column cut off iu tee gap broke into single
file and commenced to cross over the moun
tain by a path leading a hundred yards in
our rear of whicn I had not the slightuet
I knowledge, though I haul bean there for more
thau a month.
RETREAT FROM THS FORT.
I readily recognized the gravity of our
situation, for if they succeeded in crossing
before we got across this path they would
have us cutoff. I immediately called F.'s
attention to our situation, but he was to in
tensely engaged he did not at first bear me,
but when he did he was not -slew to realize
the surrounding, We both started at quick
time to retreat, but by different routes, F.
directly up the ridge of the mountain, I in
clined to the south side of the mountain,
which brought me sooner to their line of
march, and, as luck Would have it, I found
an interval of about 'thirty feet between
files, and I jumped across their line of
march with all the agility I couid command
without being seen aud Blade my escape.
HID BEHIND A LOG.
F. was not so fortunate. He was seen by
three of the most advanced flies, who start
ed in hot pursuit. Ho ran until oompletely
exhausted and finally ran to an embank
ment about breast high, upon which was a
*arge log. He threw himself over the log
ana hid behind it. The union soldiers pur
sued to this embankment, by whioh further
pursuit on their part was stopped. They
were within a few feet of their game, but
did not know it.
How many we killed I never learned. All
I can say at this day is I hope none, but
upon tbeir retreat they took prisoner one
Dr. Marsteller, who said, when reloased,
that their ambulance were well filled with
wounded. One dead horse was left upon the
field and our ruse to obtain one did not suo
ceed.
I am well aware that iu this affair there
was a display of nothing save reckless fool
hardiness. But it was this individuality of
aotion which mads the confederate army so
formidable, which enabled them with so
■mail numbers to successfully oppose so long
the armies of the north.
This is the answer to the question pro
pounded by Ocn. Buell in concluding bis
Century article upon the battle of Stone
River. The northern soldier did not possess
this quality in the beginning of tho war, but
beiug Americans they very soon acquired
it, os evidenced by their charge without
orders upon Missionary Ridge, also when
the Seventeenth corps (I think it was), at
tacked in front and rear, re. ulied the ouomf
In front, then leaped like monkeys over
their breastworks and repulsed the attack
from their rear.
How 1 maintain if soldiers of any army
of Europe wore similarly idtuatod they
would deem the exigencies of the situation
as demanding quirk and immediate surren
der.
WALKED 20 MILE3 TO BE MARRIED
A Blue Grass Girl Bocomes a Bride in
Spite of Obstacles
From the St. Louis Globe-Democrnt.
Louisville, Ky., March 13.—George
Palfrey and Miss Cora E. Collins were mar
ried in Jeffersonville last night, after hav
ing overborne a series of nbutaoles. The
pair bailed from Montgomery county, Ken
tucky. The objections of the lady’s parents
made it necessary for her to elope, and on
Thursday night she stole away from home
and joined Palfrey, who was in wuitlng at
a safe distance from the house.
They at once set out on foot for Chambers
Station, twenty miles distant, the nearest
railway station. All night they trudged
along, occasionally being oompelled to ston
and warm by a fire, which Palfrey would
build on the roadside. Their progress was
slow, but at length they arrived at the ob
jective point iu a half-froze* condition, only
to find that the train for Louisville had
passed a short time before. It was mid
night when they crossed to Jeffersonville.
An enterprising matrimonial agent encoun
tered them, and divining tbeir mission prof
fered his services, which were gladly ac
cepted. Their marriage certificate was se
cured, aud going to a magistrate’s residence
the knot was tied.
The groom now found himself in an em
bnrrasiing position. Having left home
with a limited amount of funds, aud after
having paid $3 for his marriage license,
he made the painful discovery that $1 10
was the total of the balance on hand. He
tossed the squire the dollar and left him
only a sufficient sum to pay the ferriage
aoross the Kentucky. Ho studied for some
time how he was to reoomponse ths young
man whose services had been so valuable to
him, when he pulled bis barlow knife and
empty wallet and proffered them, but they
were declined. Palfrey then promised
upon reaching home to adjust matters with
a remittauce. The early morning boat oar
ried the bride and groom back to tbeir
native state. They said they would spend
the night in the waiting rooms of one of
the railroad stations and this morning re
sume their journey to their Kentucky
home.
