of establishing a race track to train and

A negro living near Cherokee almost gave

Rome will soon be without a recorder.
CoL J. L Wright, the present recorder,
will shortly leave for Flirt Worth, Tex.,

Eiberton Star: It may not be generally
knosn, but it is neVertbsless trus, that tbs
first general conference of the Methodist
church in Georgia was held in Elbert oounty.
The conference was appointed to be held at
Thompson’* pneeting house, in the lower part
of the oounty, which building was moved a
mile or *o. anil is now Bethlehem church,
but, on account of the oold weather, >he
deliberations of the conference, consisting of
a dozen mluieters, were held at Charles
Tail’*. This statement will be news to many
Methodists in Georgia, few of whom having
ever thought to inquire where the first con
ference was held.
Augusta Herald: For tome days past
our citizens have been getting it in Ate neck
for not making returns on their property.
The edict hss gone forth that a man must
W taxes on his property, however small,
and watches and jewelry come in for this.
It Is the law but has never been enforced
and therefore Is somewhat of a surprise to
the people. Twonty-flve case* were ar
raigned before the recorder, and they all,
with one exception, were compelled to ante
up. That exception was Joseph S.
Dean. When his case was called he waltzed
up smiling with an act of the legislature in
which he was exempted from taxation. He
has a charter by an act of legislature, allow
iug him to do a real estate, life, tire and
accident insurance business, borrow and
lend money, and forever exempting him
from taxation. The produotion of tbli
charter was quite a surprise to the court,
and created a great deal of talk. Judge
Pieroe reserved hit decision In the case, but
it is thought that Mr. Bean’s defense will
hold good.
Augusta Herald: Quite a disturbance
was raised in a prominent Jackson street
boarditig house Saturday night. To save
the blushes ot a lady we will have to avoid
the use of names, but the story is too good
keep. It Is electricity in a bath tub. By
some manner of means an eleotrio wire
came in oootact with e bath tub in the
house in question and thoroughly charged
the wator that filled the tub. A youug
lady boarder, anticipating a bath, wan
dered into the apartment, and, plunging
her band into the tub to reaob a cake of
soap that bad fallen into It, was badly
scared by a most painful sensation in her
hand and arm. Thinking it only imagina
tion or some kindred agitation, she essayed
to reach the soap again, out was
baffled by another application
“of a feeling as if needles
were being driven into the hand.” Hastily
arranging her garments tbs lady sum monel
the entire bouse and told her trouble. Of
course she was laughed at, but the most
resolute non-believers of the story were
rapidly convinced by inserting their hends
into the water. The water was drawn off
and a most thorcugh search instituted to
find the cause of the youug lady * discom
fort, but without avail. The tub was re
fUltd, but the queer sensation did not dis
appear with the wnter that had been let off.
After tome time the cause of the trouble
was discovered, but the young lady would
not venture near the funny tub again, and
on® “wash night” was allowed to go by
without its fuuctions being performed.

The Scheme Worked.
From the Boston Herald.
Borne of Boston’s beggar children have a
new trick for wheedling dimes out of cred
ulous soft hearts. A well-dressed gentle
man was walking along Harrison avenue
yesterday wbeu he heard a voice say:
"O, Isn't he elegautf" He turned saw
that a pretty little girl had uttered the
observation with evident reference to
him. and ia the pleasure of gratified van
ity be tossed her a quarter, smiled and
passed on.
A Herald man was only a few yards be
hind, and be deteoted the side play which
revealed the imposture. As soon as the
impressionable innocent had turned his
back the pretty little girl took from her
ponket a half handful of silver and said to
herself: "I guess I won't get a licking to
night.”
