PITT3B UftG’ S MINISTERS.
They Resent the Utterances of Their
Brethren in New York.
Pittsburg, Dec. 19. —The United Presby
terian ministers of Pittsburg, burning un
der the rebuke administered them by the
most promiuent divines of New York oity
for tbeir attitude on the social evil question,
are now framing a vigorous reply in defense
of tbeir position. The matter was discussed
to-day at the regular weekly meeting of the
Preachers’ Association, aud the resolution
Is now being prepared. A week ago the
New York Herald published interviews
with all the prominent divines of that city
on the attitude of the Pittsburg ministers
toward the dissolute women of the town,
against whom relentless war was then
being waged. With but few exceptions the
aotion of the Pittsburg ministers was de
nounced in emphatic language. It was in
retaliation for these ministerial criticisms
that Revs. Messrs, itobli son and Mo reory
got together and proposed the action tuken
by the United Presbyterian Association
this morning. When the smoke of the ani
mated discussion had oleared away the as
sociation, as a body, bad adopted a resolu
tion setting forth that the criticism of the
New Yorkers had been most unjust and un
called for, aud that they were uttered with
out knowledge of the existing state of af
fairs in Pittsburg. The secretary was in
structed to have copies sent to the New
York ministers.

Someone remarked that the devil is
among the clothiers, because so 'much cut
ting in prices. Every merchant has
all he can do fo tend to his own
business. "The Famous i” Clothing House
finds (notwithstanding the heavy sales) too
muoh goods on hand; to move them we cut
prioes, and the profits go) up in smoke.
The goods on hand don’t appreciate if cot
ton did go up, and we think it decidly bet
ter to sell even without any profit
rather than let them lay. "The Famous ”
thinks that the best, and we act accord
ingly , Cut prices and give our customers
tbe benefit. Others may think otherwise
and hug their goods. This would be a poor
world if we were ail of one mind. The wisdom
of "The Famous" Clothing House’s actiou
in cutting prioes was shown in tbe greatly
increased sales last week of suits, overcoats,
trousers aud boys’ clothing; furnishing
goods too, we sold piles of it, giving in that
