fhg unostentatious enthusiasm of the
Cabans, which manifests itself rather in
Lj, than in words, speaks volumes for
the ultimate success of their cause. The
cLe evolutionary fund they have accu
mulated has been, of course, the result
Tj e jy of individual contribution. The les-
L of their late defeat has been well learned
by the revolutionists, and they evidently
do not intend to precipitate another ear; -

prepared to quickly bring it to a successful
P .
Though the greater part of the work of
jbe party is in the in'eriorof the island,
that part must be done silently and secretly.
Tbeir propagandist!! is carried on openly in
lie United States, and ie meeting with great
success- The headquarters of the party is
t Xew York Kenor Jose Marti, well and
favorably known in Key West'throueh his
recent visit, is at the head of the central
body. Benjamin Guerra is treasurer and
(Jonialo de Quesada secretary.
There are in the United States 88 Cuban
patriotic clubs, besides which there are 6 in
Jamaica, lin H iyti and liu Mexioo. Of
the clubs in the United States those of Key
West outnumber those of the remainder of
the country taken together, there being in
this city 54 out of a total of 88. 'The others
are divided among other cities as follows.
Tampa 13, New York 10. Ocala aid Phila
delphia 2 each, and Brooklyn, Boston, Chi
cago, New Orleans, Atlanta, Jacksonville
and St. Augustine 1 each.
The clubs in Key West are in a flourish
ing condition. New clubs are constantly
being organised, and consequently the
number of members to each club is varia
ble. Many of them have more "than fifty
members each, and several more than one
hundred each. Persons in a position to
make a close eatimafe believe that there is a
total membership of more than 3,000 ia the
Cuban clubs of Key West. J. I). Poyo of
El Yara is president of the central body, or
| club of presidents, iti Key West, and Gual-
I terio Garoia is secretary.
No fee is charged for admission into these
dubs and they are supported by voluntary
contributions. They have done much to
arouse and stimulate the spirit of inde
pendence among the Cubans, and have
given an organization to energies, which, if
scattered and isolated, would be much less
affective.
Key West's contributions to the revolu
tionary fund bwe been very generous. It
It thought that on last Patria day the sum
realized in the oigar factories alone was
more than $12,000. The employes gave
their earnings for that day to the fund, and
many of them did several hours extra work
to help swell the amount The l’ohalski
factory gave its profit for that day to the
fund. It is now proposed to commemorate
fatria day 6ach month by giving the earn
ings for that day to the revolutionary fund.
There Is on exhibition at the ooffee house
of Francis Ybern, on Charles street, a
machette and carbine, such as were used as
weapons by the patriotic soldiers during the
Cuban war of independence. The carbine
is merely a short Remington rifle of large
caliber, differing little in appearance from
the ordinary Remington. The machette,
however, is an object of unfailing interest
to all who have never before seen one. In
ahapo it is something like a Missouri
corn knife, though much larger. It is
about twenty-five incbeß in length and
21 4 inches in breadth, is slightly curved
backward and sharp from point to hilt.
The blade is of finely tempered steel, and
the bone handle, with scarcely any protec
tion for the hand, shows that it is not meant
for fencing but for business. Indeed, it is
s more fomudible looking weapon than the
Scotch claymore, and in the hands of ex
perts must be a terrible instrument of
death. There is little wonder that it was so
greatly dreaded by the Spanish soldiery
during the Cuban struggle.

“Cantoris is an excellent medicine for chil
dren. Mothers have repeatedly told me of its
good affect upon their children.”
Da. G. C. Osoood,
Lowell, Mass.
•• Castoria is the best remedy for children of
which lam acquainted. I bope the day is not
far distant when mothers will consider the real
interest of their children, and use Castoria in
stead of the various quack nostrums which are
destroying their loved ones, by forcing opium,
morphine, soothing syrup and other hurtful
agents down their throats, thereby sending
them to premature graves.”
