A letter from St. Augustine lays: J. E.
Ingraham, representing Henry M. Flagler,
has completed the organization of the hos

Important points, necessitating au army of
employes, Mr. Flagler approve 1 of the sug
gestion of Mr. Ingraham to incorporate into
his service a system similar to that so suc

president of the South Florida railway. Mr.
Ingraham's plan i* to assess each employe

West Equator-. A. M. Cionney, sec
retary of She New York Sponge Company,
and A Moses, a member of the Le Bees
Sponge Company, were in the city late in
December. They represent the sponge
trust known as the New York Sponge Com
pauy, and while here made arraugemeut
with John Lowe, Jr., to buy for the trust.
Mr, Lowe at first refused on aooount of his
heavy shipping business, but finally con
sented to act as their agent temporarily.
A motion was made in December to dis
solve the trust, but the members finally
agreed to stick together until their oompaot
empires In March, and then decide what
they will do. If the trust dissolves iu
March each firm will place their own buyer
iu the market as heretofore. The last trip
of the spongers caused a loss of
about $30,000 to the vessel owners
of Key West. Eaoh vesiei lost about
S4OO. The year past has been very unsatis
factory, and none of th* vessels have made
any money. They managed to keep about
even until the Deoeiuber trip wheh they came
out heavily in dsbt. Many of the men have no
other employment and as they will not be
sent out again until March, the outlook for
them is not bright. The dark water flow
ing out from the rivers aud bayous of the
main "has been the cause of the disas
trous year. The dark water has prevailed
three-fourths of the year, rendering it im
possible to see the sponge. The spongers
state that this dark water, supposed to be
stained by dogwood or poisonous roots of
some kind, has killed the sponge in tome
places, and that the t eds are not to thrifty
or plenteous ob they were. For two years
past from various causes there has been no
money made in the sponge business at this
port, and it is to be hoped that the new
year will prove a much more favorable one
for the business.
