MR. DENMARK MADE TRUSTEE. SUCCEEDS COL. SCREVEN ON THE UNIVERSITY BOARD. Tlif Appointment Announced Venter. <l;iv ■>>' Governor Candler—An An Wiimnnn of the l nivernity and One Who Him Always Taken a Deep Interest in Its Welfare, an Mile Lawyer and a Snecennfiii llnnlnens Man Mr. Denmark's Fit ness for the Position In Generully Hccogntzed—llls Second Recent llnnor From the Governor, r appointment by Gov. Candler o£ Brantley A. Denmark, Esq., to succeed the l,ii t . Col. John Screven as a member of ,he hoard of trustees of the State Unt v, was announced from Atlanta yes 1, lay. It goes without saying that Mr. Ik nmarlt's appointment to this honorable position will give great satisfaction to hi- friends here and throughout the gt: . Whether the Governor’s selection ,j. made as a mark of his personal friend ship and esteem for Mr. Denmark or Blether it was made with an eye single tf the interests of the university those b nr, are personally acquainted with Mr. IHnmark are. well aware that no better sel< tion could have been made with the vi. w of promoting the inlerests of the in stitution Mr. Denmark is an alumus of the uni v. isity and has always taken an earn e,-t and intelligent interest in its we,lure. That this is generally recognized by the friends and graduates of the institution is til,own by the fact that Mr. Denmark was made c hairman of Ahe committee appoint ,d by the alumni of the university some thing over a year ago to take charge of ,hf work of raising an endowment for lit; 1 dilution. In his capacity as chairman of this committee he has given much time nn l attention to its work and with some degrei of success. Mr. Denmark is a member of the Uni versity Club of Savannah and Iras been spoken of for the presidency to succeed the late Col. Screven, whom he now ,-uc e, eds as a member of the board of trus tees of the university. Mr. Denmark wns not in the city yesterday, being at Ins plantation, in Brooks county. Owing in the decided interest which he has al ways taken in the affairs of the univers al. bis aeeptance is regarded as certain. The friends of the university, who are a .ptainted with Mr. Denmark’s ability and capacity in varied lines of work, will rejoice at his selection. He possesses tile unusual combination of legitl and busi ness ability and ns such will prove a val uable member of the board of trustees. One of the leading members of the Savan nah liar, he has been at the same lime very successful - in business affairs. He ! has been president, since its organization, of the Citizens Bank, one of Savannah’s ; most solid as well as most prosperous financial institutions. He has been for the last several years president of the ] Southwestern Railroad, and it was large ly through his able management, both legal and financial, that the stockholders of that road were saved from being in volved in the general w'reck of the Cen tral Railroad properties a few years since. Mr. Denmark was president of the Sa vannah Construction Company, which built the South Bound Railroad, and was also president of the road. This enter prise differed from the great majority of its kind in the fact that it was not only successful as a public enterprise, hut that It was also a success from the standpoint of the stockhold ers who received back every dollar they had put in and interest on their invest ment besides. The great results which have accrued to Savannah from the build ing of this road are well known. Its con struction resulted in the extension of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad to Savannah, which latter road is now about to become a part of the great Sea board system. Mr. Denmark has also ben active in other Savannah enter prises, w hich have redounded to the good or the city. He was very active in the organization of the Savannah Hotel Com pany, which built and still owns the De Soto Hotel, one of the finest hostelries in the South. He is now a director of the company. Mr. Denmark was born and reared in Brooks county, where he still has large planting interests. He graduated from the university in 1871, being one of the honor men of his class. Aftef graduating he came to Savannah and studied law in the office of Hartridge & Chisholm. In 1882 he formed a law partnership with the late Judge A. Pratt Adams and Mr. Samuel B. Adams, under the firm name of Den mark, Adams & Adams. After the death of Judge Adams, a few years since, the firm was continued under its present name of hi nmark, Adams A Freeman, Mr. Den mark being the senior member. Mr. I>enmark was recently appointed by Gov Candler one of the two commission ’ ™ fr, m this state to attend the World's Exposition at Paris this summer. His further appointment as a member of the hoard of trustees of the State University ! ample evidence of the high confidence film'd in his ability and integrity by the Governor. While Mr. Denmark is a man "'ho has never held or sought public of fi •. and has avoided notoriety to an un usual degree, he has the confidence and m of his fellow citizens, who will in dorse the wisdom of the Governor's se lection.
