most cases a specific and absolute remedy.
Scrofulous poison is one of the moat destructive
enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt
tenantoftho organism undermines the constitution,
and invites tho attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
it seems to breed infaction throughout the body, and
then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop
into ono or other of its hideous forms, either on the
surfhee or among tho vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles snay bo suddenly deposited in the lungs or
heart, or tumors formed in tho liver. These facts
mako tho occasional U30 of the Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable. •
It i3 a mistake to suppose that so long sis no erup
tions or humors appear, there must be no scrofulous
taint. Theso forms of derangement may never
occur, and yet tho vital forces of tbo body be so re
duced by its subtle agency, as materially to impair
the health and shorten tho duration of life. It 13 a
common error, also, that scrofula is strictly heredi
tary. It doe3, indeed, descend from parent to child,
but is also engendered in persons bora of pure
blood. Low living, indigestion, foul air, licentious
habits, uncleanliness, and tho depressing vices gen-
orallv, produce it. Weaklyconstitutions, where not
fortified by tho most constant and judicious care,
aro peculiarly liable to it. Yet tho robust, also,
whose turbid blood swells tho veins with an appar
ently exuberant vitality, are often contaminated,
and on the road to its consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immunity from
it, nor feel insensible to tho importance of an effec
tual remedy.
