fliEATME N T
OF UlUOJilC liROXCHITIS.
INHALATION,
nv DR- JAMES A. HUNTER.
(Late of New Orleans,)
rtrsicwn for Diseases of the Head, Throat
and Langs.
frlUon Tdegrnph—SwB: In my last I con-
a brief description of the nature and
jjaptoms of several forms of Chronic Bron-
.vjtis. In this, I shall describe equally as brief-
i r jU treatment by Medicated Inhalation.
Lite *11 other great improvements in medical
psciico, this struggled for many years, against
bigoted opposition of the great mass of the
cedical profession, and not until after it had
seen thoroughly tested by Sir Charles Scuda
more end a few other equally as eminent pbysi-
ys3 of Englend, did it receive the attention it
c eiite deserved, and Sir Charles Scudamore said
,fit: “It it on selfish grounds I advocate the
yxfat (Inhalation.) What concerns mg repu
gn it personal transient and of little moment •
*5strdnU* to science and the interests ofman-
fyijfuraU ages and of inestimable impor-
latt-
it present this system is receiving moreat-
Kjtion from the profession at large than ever
Kfon. Some of the most eminent medical men
({jus country have adopted it in all diseases of
fcBcspiratory Organs coming under their care
the literature upon the subject is already
atrasive, yet much of it is totally worthless, as
it teachings of the anthors are not founded
jpa special experience, and to this cause may be
•oibed the failnre of its success in the hands i
i way whose qualifications as physicians are
jtenrise good.
The term “inhalation” is applied to the act
([inspiring or drawing a vapor, gas oratomized
|bd or tprag into to the lungs, as air is drawn
j it each inspiration. "When this vapor is medi
ated'as in the treatment of disease of the air
jusiges, by this system of treatment, it is
rated Medicated Inhalation. I am thus par-
nnlar, as a method of treatment for lnng dis
use*. termed Inhalation, has been suggested
ai emn practiced by a few, wherein the pa
tent merely draws air through a small silver
abe held in the month. In this case the effect
-if any—is merely mechanical and not thera
peutical or medicinal, and conldbe accomplished
mb better by inspiring and expiring deeply
vithout any such contrivance,
rations forms of apperatns have been con
tacted both by myself and others, for the ap-
pBeorion of medicated vapor to the diseased air
pages of tho lungs. The one at present nsed
if ms is that universally known as “ Hunter's
Haler." It is constructed principally of glass
phi and rubber and the glass globe attached
kit holds abont a pint of fluid. This fluid is
mm, hot or boiling according to the nature or
bge of tho disease and the medicine is added to
1 Air is then drawn through it and, becoming
sweated, together with the vapor arising,
Itaes into the longs and becomes distributed
htbe minutest ramification or branches of the
lonchial tubes. Thus an application of a rem
it is made directly to the seat of the disease in
Mnnehial tubes and lungs. The inhalations
W taken once or twice a day and continued
*h time for five, ten or fifteen minutes accord-
•gto the indications of the case and the strength
i the patient. In Bronchitis tho first object of
he physician is to cleanse the air passages by
'rpoimnu inhalation and allay the irritation
Jpon which tho secretion depends,by mild sooth-
n S ^pors. The diseased and ulcerated surfaces
anst be healed by Alterative and Astringent
■smedies and the functions of all the organs of
k tody kept in good order by judicious consti-
3t * oa *l treatment by the stomach.
‘I am thoroughly convinced that in proportion
^ inhalation in tubercular Consumption and
forie Bronchitis is more nsed and really un-
k*tood, and done justice to, so will its high
become known, and its good name be es-
dished. This practice should be persevered
for a great length of of time, beginning with
l ' te a day, soon increasing to three time, then
ing to twice, afterward to once, and even
finally suspending its employment; by
plan, on its renewal, its efficacy may be
**ter.”—Sir Charles Scudamore.
toy next I will take up the subject of Pul-
tD Uty Consumption, but as the period allotted
oy stay here is drawing to a close I must
*«tasarily be terse. The demands of a large
^ practice in tho city of New Orleans will
^r it necessary for me to return to that city
deafly
date.
Respectfully,
James A. Hunteb, M. D.,
Office No. 70 Mulberry St.

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,
FOR PURIFYING THE BLOOD.
The reputation this es
cellcnt medicine enjoys,
is derived from its cures;
many of which aro of e
truly marvellous char
acter. Inveterate cases
of Scrofula, where the
system seemed ntterh-
given up to corruption,
have yielded to this com
pound of anti-strumoua
virtues. Disorders of a
scrofulous type, and af
fections winch are merely
aggravated bv tlie presence of scrofulous matter,
have been radically cured in such numerous in
stances, in every settlement in the country, that the
public do not need to he informed here tnat it is in
most cases a specific and absolute remedy.
Scrofulous poison is ono of tho most destructive
enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt
tenant of the organism undermines tho constitution,
andinvites tho attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
it seems to breed infection throughout tho body, and
then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop
into ono or other of its hideous forms, either on the
surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles may bo suddenly deposited in tho lungs or
heart, or tumors formed ia tho liver. These facts
make tho occasional U36 of tho Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable. <M
It is a mistake to suppose that so long as no erup
tions or humors appear, there must be no scrofulous
taint. These forms of derangement may never
common error, also, that scrofula Is strictly heredi
tary. It does, indeed, descend from parent to child,
hut is also engendered in persons bom of pure
blood. Low living, indigestion, foul air, licentious
habits, uncleanliness, and the depressingviccs gen
erally, produce it. Weakly constitutions, where not
fortified by the most constant and judicious care,
are peculiarly liable to it. Yet tho robust, also,
whose turbidblood swells the veins with anappar*
cully exuberant vitality, are often contaminated,
nnd on the road to it3 consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immunity from
it, nor feel insensible to the importance of an effec
tual remedy.
In SI. Anthony’s Fire, Rose or Erysipelas,
for letter, Salt Xhcutn, Scald Head, Ring
worm, Sore Ears and Eyes, and other eruptive
or visible forms ofthe diseases caused primarily by
the scrofulous infection, the Sarsaparilla is so ef
ficient as to bo indispensable. And in the more
concealed forms, as in Jiyspepsla,Dropsy, Heart
Disease, Fits, Epilepsy, Neuralgia, and other
affections of tho muscular and nervous systems, the
Sarsaparilla, through ila purifying power, re
moves the cause of the disorder and produces aston
ishing cures.
The sarsaparilla root of the tropics does not by
itself achieve these results. It is aided by the ex
tracts combined with it, of still greaterpower. So
potent is this union or healing virtues, Syphilis or
Venereal and Mercurial Diseases are cured by
it, though a longtime is required Tor subduing these
obstinate maladies by anv medicine. Eeueorrhaea
or Whites, Uterine Ulcerations, and Female
Diseases in general, are cammonly soon relieved
and ultimately cured by the invigorating and puri
fying effect of our Sarsaparilla. Rheumatism
and Gout, often dependent on the accumulations of
extraneous matters in tho blood, havo their remedy
also in tills medicine. For Direr Complaints,

As its name implies, it docs Cure, and does not
fail. Containing neither Arsenic, Quinine, Bismuth,
Zinc, nor any other mineral or poisonous substance
whatever, it in nowise injures any patient. The
number and importance of Its cures in the ague dis
tricts, are literally beyond account, and we believe
without a parallel in the history of medicine. Our
pride is gratified by the acknowledgments we re
ceive of the radical cnre9 effected in obstinate cases,
and where other remedies had wholly foiled.
Unacclimated persons, either resident in, or
travelling through miasmatic localities, will be nro-
tected by taking the AGUE CURR daily.
