FOUND IN RIVER.
A party of boys from the neighborhood
of Hoschton, were seining recently near
the spot where the old bridge stood. One
of the dips of the seine, brought up a
very heavy substance. One of the boys,
thinking tha* it was only a piece of
wood, started tn throw it out. when he
found that it resembled an old-fashioned
gun. He examined the gun, and found
that it was a musket of civil war type.
The Ashing expedition was immediately
abandoned, and they rushed home with
the gun. An old Confederate veteran af
ter exami; Ing ft, stated that it was of
the kind usee, during the war. The boy
who had found it took it home, hanging
it up in a conspicuous place.
Lecetdly one of the children of that
home took the gun down, and upon look
ins through the barrel, found it choked.
Not content with having a gun that would
not ehoot at all. he threw the barrel into
the Ara, an explosion following immedi
ately.
LIVE STOCK SALES
AMOUNT TO $300,000
CORDELE, Ga., Feb. 17.—Mr. B. H.
Palmer, of this city, reports that 1,300
head of mules have been sold to this
date in Crisp county and vicinity to farm
ers at an approximate cost to the planters
of 8309.000. The demand for this large
number of mules is the Yesult of new
farms being opened up throughout the
county and the effort on the part of
those already operating farms to inten
sify the yield of lands under cultivation.
The sale of Ane buggy horses in Cor
dele has suffered a marked decrease and
is attributed to the use of the automo
biles for purposes formerly served by the
horse and buggy. The farmers are in
clining more and more to the use of
automobiles in the country and but few of
the prominent planters are without autos.
The Increased use of the machines is
doubtless stimulated by the fact that the
public roads in this section hate been
built up to the point that automobiles
can be operated proAtably and safely.

(By Associated Preu.)
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—Persons
who live in cities and have not mail

They will not, if a provision of the
postoffice appropriation bill becomes a
law. Letter carriers are prohibited
from delivering mail at any houses un
less there is a mail box on the outside
to receive it.
It means that Uncle Sam is tired of
having his uniformed carriers wait for
people to take their time in answering
their door bells.
It is expected this provision will
greatly Increase the efficiency of the
service and possibly reduce the number
of carriers required. A saving of $400,-

The vast expenditure by the people
to meet the provisions of this bill in
the way of providing new mall boxes

NEGRO CONVICTED FOR
ATTEMPTED ASSAULT
COLUMBUS, Ga., Feb. 17.—After one of
the shortest and most sensational crimin
al trials in the history of the Muscogee
superior court, Arch King, a young negro,
was late yesterday found guilty of the
charge of attempting to criminally assault
little Miss Catherine Trammell, 14-year
old school girl and member of a promi
nent family near Columbus, on the morn
ing of December 9, last. The jury was out
only seven minutes on the case, and tbe
entire trial only took up about seven
hours.
Since the attemtped crime, in which the
little girl was dragged some distance and
badly bruised up, the negro has been
confined in Atlanta, and other places to
prevent violence. The prisoner was se
cretly brought to the city and his trial
actually in progress before it became
known that he was here. On learning that
the trial was in progress, quite a large
number of people gathered at the court
house only to find that, as a precau
tionary measure, Judge Price Gilbert had
placed a heavy squad of officers at every
entrance to the court room and given spe
cific instructions to ehoot the first man
who attempted to force entrance.
The order had a good eeftet, evidently,
as little complaint was raised, and the
trial proceeded without interruption.
There was some talk of violence, but no
demonstration during the day. When the
verdict was anounced in the late after
noon, and Judge Gllebrt gave the negro
the full extent of the law—2o years, it
seemed to have a good effect on the peo
ple, and no further trouble is anticipated
by the authorities.
