BEAVERS BUILD BETTER
DAM THAN ENGINEERS;
NEWARK, N. J., Nov. 28. —A tale of
how a colony of beavers was able to
heap coals of Are on the heads of those
who had harmed them, comer to this city
from Stanhope, N. J. A land company
there recently deemed to construct an j
artificial pond In a section which was I
being developed and in building the |
dam to shut off the waters, the engineer |
ruthlessly tore down a dam which had j
been built at the same spot by beavers. I
The engineer’s work was completed on- I
ly a short time ago and the beavers had |
| remained in seclusion sn long that they j
had been entirely forgotten. Then one;
day last week there appeared another j
and a larger dam of beaver manufacture,
below the masonry dam and before the'
men awoke to wi.at was going on, their
new masonry was out of sight. Inas
much as the beavers have made a larger
pond than the engineers had planned,
their man enemies are Inclined to pass

nouncement was made, tonight of the
purchase by the Southern Power com
pany of the property and franchises of
the Charlotte Consolidated Construction ;
company, embracing the local street car;

dollars, decline firmly to mention the

The Southern Power company has
been projecting extensive interurban

handicapped at every point on the Char-'

held a blanket franchise. The absorp- :

A PRODUCT OF THE SOI TH.
Cotton has always been one of the
main resources of the South. In for
mer days, only the cotton Jint was
preserved; the seed was thrown away
as wifrthless. In recent years, however,
this once waste product has been de
veloped until now cotton oil adds mil
lions yearly to the wealth of the South.
Foremost in perfecting methods of !

Many Families
Three families to each farm is
the case In the United States to
day. One off the farm and two iu
town, but all dependent on the
farm. Two generations ago near
ly everybody lived on the land
and It was the lookout of each
family how they worked the land:-
Now with two-thirds of the people
in town, it not only 'concerns the
men on the farm whether the crop
is good or not, but also the man
in town who is dependent on the
produce of the land for his living.
Whether the crop be poor or good
really affects the city man more
than it does the farmer who can
keep out enough for himself, if
