These premiums apply to ducks, »nd geese, the same as chickens, and the pigeons have been provided for with ©dually as good a showing as poultry. On all varieties recognized by the pigeon standard, >2.00 will be paid for first and >I.OO for If there is only one entry in each variety of pigeons, second money will be paid and first honor awarded if worthy. Thlei is an opportunity that the pigeon breeders have never had offered them before in south, and it is to be hoped that it will bring about a large entry, which is practically assured now. A class has also been provided for a commercial egg exhibit and premium will be given for the best dozen farm eggs not pure bred, one for the best dozen Plymouth Rock eggs, one for the best Wyandotte eggs, one for the best Orpington eggs, one for the best dozen Leghorn eggs, and one for the best dozen Minorca eggs; also one for the best dozen pure bred eggs other than the var V2 lef J tloned in this list. Miami, Fla.: Being a render of your valuable paper, I take the liberty of asking your advice. For the past year I have been losing more than 75 per cent of my young chickens, caused from some peculiar disease, I know not what. The chickens die when between two and six weeks old. Have not lost one before two weeks pf age, nor any after six weeks old/ They become affected very sud denly, opening their mouths and gasping for breath very regularly every four or five seconds, until they die, which is from three to twelve hours. Occasionally they have a kind of fit, throwing themselves around violenUy. I have not known o ne of them to get well after being affected. The disease is not gapes, as I have examined a number of them thoroughly, after death, and find no worms. They have no symptoms of bowel trouble and are perfect ly thrifty up to the time they are affected. The chickens are fed principally on corn meal, wheat and millet seed, aome wheat bran, comrer mere is 1 meat meal, and corn meal fed daily and as a wet mash two or three times per week. They have plenty of green food and grit at ail times. Some of them have been given free range, and others have been closely confined, only be ing allowed out on grass lawn bout an hour each day when the weather was fair. Several of myjieighbors are trou bled with the same disease. ANSWER After reading your letter care fully, it is hard to say what Is the direct cause of the heavy death loss among your chickens. I do not bo lieve It is any disease, but that it it something in the treatment, either tn the brooding or the feed they are getting. The age men tioned is a critical stage with them, as they are throwing off the down and taking on feathers, and .c re quires warmth and dryness, and good, rich feed to help them through this period. I am inclined to think that the brooding system you use has more to do with the trouble than anything else. Evi dently they are too crowded, or get out into the dampness too early. My experience i s that chickens raised artificially do better if kept up until they ar- six .reeks old, etirely off the ground, but not too crowded in close quarters. Further more. they should have warmth, which is just as impo tant from two weeks to six weeks old, as it is the first two weeks of their life, but they should not be overheated or crowded in their sleeping quar ters. it is possible that •'they get tooo something tn the breeding stock that does not produce chickens with strong constitutions. On the other hand, from your feeding formula, it is possibile that they get too much corn, which causes indiges tion. One-third meat -crap and two thirds bran should be kept before them at all times after they pass 10 days old. I do not rea • be lieve it is a good idea to feed corn meal to them so early, as It also has a tendency to give them indi gestion. especially If they do not have an unlimited range. The wet mash is also bad for them while they are young. Cracked rice, oat meal, crushed wheat, with a small amount of pearl grits in it, makes the best feed you can give your chickens until they are six weeks old. Then give them only what they will eat clean every two or three hours, instead of leaving a lot of it before them at all times. Theyshould be kept practically hungry and be forced to eat up their feed in a few moments after it is given them. If any is left, it should be taken away. A bunch of young chickens can be upset very easily by being overheated, or chilled, and when this is once done, it is a hard matter to get them started again. , Would be glad to hear further from you, and hope you can get some ideas fromthis letter that will help you. If you have not made your entries, you should do so at once, as you cannot get your birds in if you wait until after the first of De cember to enter them. The following 17 varieties of chickens —Barred Rocks, Butt Rocks, White Wyandottes, White Orpingtons, Black Orpingtons, Buff Orpingtons, White Leghorns, Brown Leghorns, Black Minorcas, Single and Rose Comb Reds, In dian Runner Ducks, Standard color Indian Runner Ducks, Dark Fawn English type. Bronze Tur jeeya—wm be awarded for first prize in cash: >IO.OO for best cock, >IO.OO for best hen, >IO.OO for best cockerel and >IO.OO for best pullet, and >16.00 for best pen. In addition to these first cover two Kinas or rocs, neare ten me what you think of them for grit for chickens. I can get any quan tity of either or both with very little expense. What will it cost me per pound to raise young chickens when I have to buy all my feed at the following prices: Corn, >1.85; wheat, J 2.25; Corno scratch, >2.50; Oats, >2.25 per hundred; beef meal, 15.00, and oys ter shell, >1.25 per hundred? Will say that I have Barred Rocks and Black Minorca*. Will use sprout ed oats for green food. « ANSWER. The samples of rock eent me will answer as a substitute for grit if you cannot get the grit that Is - sharper than thia This grit is toe round and smooth. The sharper the grit the better It will be. The larger size, if crushed would be better than the present size, but should not be ground as fine aa the fine sample. Chickens need sharp edged grit to help grind and di gest their food. It would cost you for the first pound to raise broilers at 6‘ to 8 old, at the prices you are now paying for feed, at least 25 cents, and it would pay you to sell them at this age rather than keep them until they weigh two pounds, as the extra pound would cost you at least 40 cents l more. The price you are paying is entirely too much. You can get a better price than these by buying from the Lackawanna Springs Poultry Sup ply company, of Jacksonville, Fla. The beef meal should not cost over >8.50 per hundred, and the other feeds in proportion. The two breeds you have are both good and should be profitable in your section. If I can be of further assistance to you, do not hesitate to call on me. Mrs. W. B. Burnett, Anniston. Ala.: I read your articles in The Journal and enjoy them very mucn. Os course, 1 m coming to bother. My White Orpington pullets, just begin ning to lay, lay soft shell eevs nearly altogether. I have had this breed of chickens for seven years and have never had any trouble of th a kind until this spring and fall. 1 know that old hens are said to gat too fat and lay soft-shelled eggs, but 1 never knew pullets to lay them rlgh* at ths beginning before. My chickens have free range, and I feed whole corn, syrup cane seed, buttermil < and scraps from the table. Please tell me the cause of this trouble, and the remedy ANSWER: The cause for soft-shellvd eggs is from the lack of lime to furnish the necessary elements to harden the shell, and excessive feeding of corn will often cause this trouble I have occasionally seen pullets lay soft shelled eggs, bix it was for the lack of proper food. If you will discon tinue the ÜBe of so much corn and substitute oats or wheat, and give plenty of oyster shell, I thins this will stop the trouble. Mrs. M. E. Tass, Waverly Hall., Oa. My frying size chickens have sore head. Their eyes are covered with sores so that they can’t see at all. They do not appear to be sick. Please tell me what to do for them. ' ANSWER. If you will use the linseed oil and carbolic acid (one pint of linseed oil to two ounces of carbolic acid), to sponge the chiC-ens' heads with, it will cure them of sorehead. This so lution should be strong enough with carbolic acid to turn the sores back inside of 8 to 10 hours after applying to same. A. E. Greville. Griffin, Ga., 305 S. Hill street. I am interested in the line bred stock and want to breed them right. Please give me the standard points on White Leg horns, so I can score them right; and also the Brown Leghorns, Buff Leghorns, and Buff Orpingtons. Now, I am anxious to know how to score birds for the show. ANSWER. I have had a description of White Leghorns and also the Orpingtons in the paper several times. The only way you can study these fowls and know exactly how to score and select your birds will be to buy a Standard of Perfection, and take it and score your own birds, and apply it repeatedly. In this way you should become fa miliar with the important points and can soon be able to select your birds yourself. You can get a Standard for >1.50, which describee fully all the different varieties of chickens and tells exactly how yoa can score them.
