FIRS PUBLICITYIO SOLVE TRUST PROBLEM Elbert H. Gary Wants Rigid Laws Defining Business of Corporations (By Associated Brest.) wi WASHINGTON, Nov. 29-CompletP publicity of the affairs of great cor porations, coupled with rigid laws de fining the character of legitimate cor poration . business, will solve the trust problem in the United States, according to # Elbert H. Gary, chairman of the United States Steel corporation, who ap peared before the senate committee on interstate commerce today. Mr. Gary declared the United States cannot give up the big corporation or the big combination of capital. They are necessary, be said, if the United States is to maintain commercial supremacy and industrial equilibrium and the great est public good will be sectired by work ing out a system of federal control that will prevent the misuse of power of cor porations. “In the last few years,” said Mr. Gary, “there has been much In the manage ment of great business VfTairs that was wrong. Many of the great business men, including perhaps myself, has notions concerning the conduct of business which should be changed.” He said that corporations had developed to a point where they must be curbed to prevent the misuse of their power. FELDER EXONERATED OF BRIBERY CHARGE South Carolina Grand Jury Re turned a No-Bill Against T. B. Felder Wednesday The grand jury of the county of New berry, South Carolina, returned a no-bill ■Wednesday morning against T. B. Felder, of Atlanta. Mr .Felder was charged with attempting to bribe H. H. Evans, formerly chairman of the dispensary board of the state of South Carolina. The latter, it is said, was indicted by the grand jury of that county upon evidence furnished the attorney general of that -state by T. B. Felder, who assisted the attorney general in the dispensary in vestigation. It will be remembered that Cole L. Blease, governor of the state, caused the warrant to be issued several months rjo against Mr. Felder, unarging him with an attempt to bribe. One or two grand juries have met since that warrant was issued, but for reasons best known, to tne governor no effort was mads to have Mr. Felder indicted. Upon the convening of the grand jury of Newberry on Monday morning last, .he governor appeared in person and un dertook the task of having the grand jury indict Mr. Felder. After a thor ough investigation a no-bill was re turned. Thus the curtain i* rung down upon this one-act farce-comedy. Mr. Felder is one of the most promi-1 nent attorneys in Atlanta, and has a legion of friends in Atlanta and Georg who will be glad to learn that he has been cleared by the grand jury of all charges against him. Soule Wkly Exercise Herd Bull It is very important that the bull at the head of a herd be giv en plenty of exercise, gnd be fed Like a work horse, as in this manner he becomes strong and vigorous, and a sure calf getter. On the other hand, if a bull be deprived of exercise and the prop er kind of feed and becomes indo lent, lacking energy. especially breeding energy, he is rendered almost valueless; in fact, he be comes a detriment to a herd, ow ing to the fact that a breeder ts losing valuable time by repeated ly breeding his cows to him with out results. The various ways of exercising % bul| might consist in a paddock to run ip, a tread power to work in, or being chained up and stak ed. At any rate, it is important to conceive some manner in which to give the herd ball plenty of daily exercise, as the results of good feed and plenty of exercise may be plainly noticeable in the offspring. English Milk Rules The National Health society of England formulated some rules regulating the handling of milk, which are more humorous than they are practical, s ays Chicago Dairy Produce. The following is a part: The milker must wash his o» her hands, using a nail brush, be fore milking. Soap, towels and water must be provided in a con venient place for this purpose. A clean linen smock should be worn while milking, and then only. Per sons who are poorly, or have sick ness at home, should have nothing to do with the cows without the sanction of a medical man. The cowshed should be so light that every part of it is easily vis ible in the daytime with the doors closed. The cowshed should be so ven tilated that the air in it will not feel close of have a disagreeable smell. Cows, like human beings, will not suffer from ample ventilation if it is steadily maintained throughout the whole year. Lake all other animal manures, that from the fowl varies in rich ness according to the food it eats. The average manure of a well-fed fowl consists of moisture 75.3 per cent; organic matter, 18.5, and of mineral matter. 8.2 per cent. As fowls’ manure Is Invariably more useful when dried, an analysis of a lot which had been lying in a heap to dry before using gave the I following result: Nitrogen, 13.4 per cent; equivalent to ammonia, 16.3; equivalent to' calcium phos phate, 6.7 per cent. It is evident that fowls’ manure contains a high proportion of nitrogenous matter, but a smaller quantity of phosphates than Is found in guano. The latter generally con tains about 20 per cent of phos phates calculated as calcium phosphates, and yields from 6 to 8 per cent of ammonia. Many cockerels of the Mediter ranean class, especially Minorcas, ' are discarded because their combs lop over while they are young. If a big-combed bird be a little out of sorts, his comb will at once drop. After he comes into good condition agalh, the comb gener ally stands erect, especially if the base of it is thick and strong. llf cockerels of this class are forced too much, especially if given a lot of soft food, their combs apparently lose firmness. When a comb is noticed to fall the bird should be given a cod liver oil capsule at night, and fed entirely on grain. In some cases cockerels’ combs are so weak at the base that nothing will make them stand, but even such birds should not oe discarded, for if they are otherwise good they will be valuable for pullet-breed ing.
