■IH SENTENCED FOR
MURDER OF IM. OBES
Jury Recommends Mercy in
Forsyth Case —Other
Cases Tried There
FORSYTH, Ga., Feb. 19.—This was
criminal weelfr in the Monroe superior
court and most of the time was taken up
in the trial of three murder cases. An
unusual feature' was the fact that the
two parties convicted were women.
Both, hpwevef, secured recommenda
tions from the juries and were given
life sentences by Judge W. E. H. Searcy,
Jr.
Mattie Lou Harris, one of the negro
women, was convicted of the murder of
John M. Barnes, one of the most popular
men in Monroe county. Barnes who was
a bailiff in Russellville district sought
to arrest Hehry Harris, the husband of
the convicted woman, who had raised
a disturbance at a negro meeting near
Russellville. The evidence for the
state showed that Mr. Barnes was shot
in the back by the negro woman. Hen
ry Harris, who was first said to have
killed the bailiff, was killed later in the
day, while making an attack on another
white man.
RacheaelJ ackson, another negro wom
an, was convicted of the murder of
Trnest Jordan, a negro man in her own
home.
Hob Wimbish, • charged charged with
the murder of Will Head, both negroes,
under a plea of self defense secured an
acquittal.
A case that attracted considerable at
tention was that of Albert Smith, charg
ed with the burning of the bam of W.
D. Thurmon, a prominent' farmer
with whom he worked. The evidence,
however, failed to sufficiently connect
the negro with the burning and he was
acquitted, and by a jury composed al
most entirely of farmers.

(Special Dispatch to The Journal.))
MARIETTA, Ga,, Feb. 18.—Memories
of the famous Taft " 'possum dinner/’

It was one of those dinners that can
only be given In the south, and the
courses were excellent—partridges and
•possum being the chief attraction.
'Possum was as new to Mr. Blakeslee
as It had been to President Taft, but he
took right to It. After the dinner the
negro servants were heard discussing
the guest of honor. One of the servants
was heat’d to talk something along this
line:
"Marster Newt sez dat Gfen’l Blakeslee

EVER SALIVATED BY
CALOMEL? HORRIBLE!
Calomel is quicksilver and acts
like dynamite on
your liver
Calomel loses you a day! You know
what calomel is. It’s mercury; quick
silver. Calomel is dangerous. It crashes
into sour bile like dynamite, cramping
and sickening you. Calomel attacks the
bones and should never be put into youi
system. .
When you feel bilious, sluggish, con
stipated and all knocked out and believe
you need a dose of dangerous calomel
just remember that your druggist aells
for 50 cents a large bottle of Dodson’s
LiVer Tone, which is entirely vegeta
ble and pleasant to takd and is a per
feet substitute for calomel. It is guar
anteed to start your liver without stir
ring you up inside, and cannot sali
vate.
Don’t take calomel! It makes yod sick
the next day; it loses you a day’s work.
Dodson’s Liver Tone straightens you
right up and you feel great. Give It
to the children because it is perfectly
harmless and doesn’t gripe.—(Advt.)
