NEW YORK, Feb. 21.—There was a renewal
of scattering local liquidation and southern sell
ing at the opening of the cotton market toda.v.
Liverpool was lower than due with private ca
hies reporting a little hedge selling in the mat
i ket there, and first prices here were 8 to 11
I points under Saturday’s dosing figures- People
I with southwestern connections were heavy sell
ers, presumably actual, while It was reported
j that hedge selling was also coming in from other
> sections of the belt, and -he active month* sola

the movement. Around 11.20 for March, 11.45

| be a considerable demand from shorts and trade
interests, and prices rallied 9 or 10 points

The early rally met continued southern sell-1
Ing and was followed by reactions to nearly th* |
low point of the morning, but trading became
I less active toward midday and prices steadied
on covering or buying for a reaction. May con
-1 tracts which had rallied to 11.55 and reacted
to 11.47. ruled around 11.5.3 shortly after mid
day. or about 8 points net lower.
The market became rather unsettled neafn dnr
'ng the middle of the afternoon with May selling
off to 11.40 and July to 11.70. or back to with
in 3 or 4 points of the early low level and
about 11 to *l2 points net lower under renews,!
liquidation and New Orleans and scattered
southern selling.

NEW ORLEANS. Feb. 21.—Active trading and,
heavy selling featured the opening of the loca>
cotton market today. Values fell away under.
the pressure, losing 12 to 14 points In the first
I half hour of business. Nearly all of the selling,

Complaints of drouth in the southwest, re
ports of a large business in cotton transactions
and efforts of short took their profits
lated a buying movement at the middle of the
morning. The downward tendency was checked
and at noon prices had recovered to a level 4 i
to 5 points under Saturday's close.
The market was barely steady in the after
noon. At 1:30 prices were at a net loss of 6
to 11 points.

CHICAGO, Feb. 21.—Wheat dropped if
value today as a result of lower quotations ,
from Llhverpool and because of liberal receipts
here and In the northwest. There were also
advices that sections in Missouri, where sleet
damage to the winter crop had been fearea ■
were becoming beautifully green. Some of the
consequent selling here was of a stop loss chsr-,
acter. Opening prices which ranged from H; (
to 2@2'4 down, with May at $1.2544 to |
$1.27, and July at $1.21’4 to $1.22, were fol- (
lowed by a slight additional decline.
Decided breaks in wheat ensued, the sequel ’
of a lack of expert buying. Evening up for 'the (
holiday tomorrow led however, to something of
a rally and so too did a substantial decrease
of the United States visible supply. ’ The close
was unsettled 1%fa244«i244c net lower, with
may at $1.24%@1.24% and July at $1.2044.
Big arrivals weakened corn. More than 1,100
carloads reached Chicago. After opening half
to 144 c lower, the market underwent a mod
erate further sag.
Bullish estimates of the Argentine exportable
corn surplus helped afterward to steady the ;:
market. The close was easy at %@% to %®4 |
%c net decline.
Oats turned down grade with corn and wheat. 1
i Pit traders, however, were buyers on the de I
[ cline.
| Higher price* on hogs strengthened provis
ions. Besides, exports for the week showed an
increase as compared with the week before.
