German Embassy Does
Not Believe Story Told
By Karl A. Graves
(By Associated Press.)
WASHINGTON, Nov. 15—The Ger
man embassy does not believe that Karl
Armgaard Gravea secured from the
steamship Oscar 11. as he save, the let
ters he is alleged to have used In an
attempt to extort $2,000 from Countess
von Bernstorff, wife of the German am
bassador. Graves will be arraigned for
a preliminary hearing here tomorrow.
The Oscar II arrived at New York
November 1, having left Copenhagen
October 22.
According to the German embassy
the latest date on the documenta taken
from Graves Is September 6. It is un
believable. embassy officials declare,
that the packet containing the papers
could have been kept in Europe nearly
a month and a half.
Extraordinary efforts are being made
to determine the identity of the mes
senger who brought the packet to the
United States and the ship he traveled
on. The embassy feels that the mes
senger. having lost ths packet through
aecilent or thefL might have feared to
report the loss.

BOMBS RAINED ON
GERMAN TRENCHES
IN BRITISH ATTACK
Majority of Infantry Fight in
New Offensive in France
Was Done With Hand
Grenades
(By Aswctatsd Prasa.)
(Copyright 1916, by the Associated
Press.)
« WITH THE BRITISH ARMIES IN
FRANCE, Via London, Nov. 15.—The
British advance along both sides of the
Ancre, which continued yesterday with
the capture of the village of Beaucourt,
la considered by the British command
era aa one of the most important suc
cesses in the four months of the of
fensive. They Insist especially ,on the
relatively insignificant character of the
German resistance in a position which
they consider of great strategic Impor
tance and one of the most highly forti
fied on the entire western front.
More than 5,000 prisoners have been
collected In the extensive subterra
nean galleries and .chambers which were
sunk on both sides of the valley and
were miles In extenL Five hundred
Germans surrendered in a tunnel near
BL Pierre Divlon, which was a mile
and a half long. This tunnel gave ac
cess to scores of electric lighted cham
bers in which companies of infantry
were housed and which contained quan
tities of machine guns and bombs. An
other 700 prisoners were caught In a
ravine south of Beaumont-Hamel where
they were cut off by the first attack
on Monday afternoon.
The British success south of .ie
Ancre was increased owing to the fact
that the Germans in this section were
on the point of being relieved by fresh
troops when the attack was launched.
The result was that twice the normal
strength of the garrison was trapped
by the barrage fire.
FIGHT WITH GRENADES.
Among the prisoners taken here were
many men of the Ninety-third Infan
try of which the Duke of Albany is
honorary colonel in chief., The regi
ment lost heavily. According to the
prisoners the duke was waiting in the
rear to inspect the regiment when it
left the fighting line.
The majority of the infantry fighting
was done with grenades instead of
bayonets. The British swarmed over
the surface between the trench lines
and hurled showers of bombs into the
German dugouts and shelters, capturing
in quick succession seven parallel rows
of the main German trenches between
Beaumont-Hamel and Beaucourt. Pris
oners from the Prussian guards told the
Associated Press correspondent that the
terrific British bombardment destroyed
the machine gun emplacements and
made resistance to the infantry charge
impossible. They said they were cut
off from their reserves on an entire
front of seven miles which was iso
lated by the British curtain fire. They
declared they were glad to surrender.
A tank which helped to destroy ma
chine gun positions at the bottom of
the valley south of the Ancre was at
tacked with bombs by the Germans who
swarmed about in large numbers. All
of the attackers were killed by the guns
of the tank.
Two-thirds of the British casualties
south of the Ancre were walking cases.
The total losses were lighter tn pro
portion than in any previous operation
of the past four months. All ground as
far as Beaucourt has been well con
solidated and the troops are pushing
beyond Feenele. The Germans so far
have not attempted any counter at
tacks.

SPECIAL NOTE.—Dr. E. Sauer. d pbyslcan

a thorough investigation in to tbe real seen t

Jess Willard, and tbe marvelous value of nux

NEW YORK.—Upon
viewed at his apartment n the Colonial
Hotel, Mr. Willard said: Yes, I have a
chemist with me to study the v:Hue of
different foods and products as to their
power to produce great strength and
endurance, both of which are so neces

the free use of iron by all those who
wish to obtain great physical and men

Dr. Sauer said: "Mr. Willard’s case is
only one of hundreds which I could cite
from my own personal experience which

Not long ago a man came to me who
was nearly half a century old, and asked
