Athene. Ga. , Cantoloupe Growing in Georgia The eulticauon of cantaloupes has now assumed verv considerable propor tions xp Georgia. It may I* authentic ally stated that 64t> cars were shipped out of the state up to August 1. 1916. During the same period California shipped 5.620 cars and sent them a much • longer distance to market than is nec essary in the case of the Georgia grow- • er. There is no reason why this in dustry should not be greatly enlarged • to the material advantage of Georgia farmers and truckers. A careful inves tigation of the situation indicates that the state could find a market in the next few years for at least 5.000 cars of cantaloupes. Os course, the indus try should be built up gradually so as not to overdo it in any one locality. The production of cantaloupes must, of course, be studied and carried forward in a systematic manner. Farmers should plant a relatively small acreage to begin with and increase the same from year to year. A review of what may be accomplished along this line is presented for the information of our readers. It includes a number of ex cerpts taken from the circular prepared on "Commercial Cantaloupe Growing. by J. W. Flror, of the Georgia State College of Agriculture. The separating of trash of all kinds from the cornmeal is practically perfect, because of an invention that is used only on Meadows mill—the only patented weevil spout on the market. The spout consists of two screens built into a ' main frame, which, while vibrating rapidly, receives the corn from the hopper. Nothing larger than shelled corn can pass through the top screen. OKIGINATOKS AND BKEEDEBS ties the growers are marketing or are ready to market their products through their own organizations, while the Geor gia Fruit exchange, a stock company which has been successfully marketing peaches for a number of years, is pre paring to market cantaloupes on the same or similar basis. Several individ uals have also been marketing canta loupes for growers on a contract basis. In fact, the marketing phase of the cantaloupe business is in the best shape it ever has been with indications that it will be further improved. That the blight hinderance to this in dustry can be abated was clearly dem onstrated in tests made by the horti cultural department of this institution, during the season of 1916, near Fitz gerald. This contribution to the solu tion of the growing problem, taken with the progress that has been made in bet ter marketing, has brought about the most healthy condition the business has j ever enjoyed. Sandy loam soils or the wiregrass sec tion are specially adapted to canta loupes. They admit of early planting J and easy cultivation. The lighter types, especially th€ sands, are often infested with nematode worms. which cause root knot. They also dry out more readily than the heavier types, but be ■ cause they warm up readily, thev ave in their favor earliness of production. Any soil for cantaloupe growing, regard less of type, needs to be fertile. Obser vations made during the past five years show beyond a doubt that soils wh.clt have been built up by turning under cowpeas or velvet beans, or have heavy applications of manure, are the soils IHE ATLANTA SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL, ATLANTA, GA., TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1917. which make the heavy yields. It is bet ter to build up soils before planting than try to grow cantaloupes with a heavy application of commercial fertilizer o> fresh manure at time of planting. Besides the different strains of the Netted Gem (Rocky Ford I, all of which are good commercial varieties for Geor gia, a variety called Pink Meat, or Pink Queen, lias been successfully grown for the last thrge years. Unless future development indicates otherwise, theer is little preference to be given among these varieties. It is usually de sirable to plant only one variety in a section, and this is certainly good prac tice for the individual farmer. Before the season of 1915 it was con sidered necessary to use a commercial fertilizer containing at least 6 per cent of potash, but the experience of 1916 has indicated that cantaloupes can be produced with little or no potash. Wheth er they will be as good as those produced with heavy of potash can only be accurately determined by care ful experiments in the south Georgia section. None of such experiments has yet been reported. The use of potash therefore should not be too hastily dis credited and wherever possible a com mercial fertilizer containing some pot ash is recommended. It is suggested that on good soils, from 400 to 800 pounds of a ommerclal fertilizer analyzing 10 per cent phosphoric acid. 4 per cent nitro gen and 3 to 6 per cent potash, if ob tainable, be used. Nitrogen from an or ganic source such as tankage, cotton seed meal, etc., is preferable. Nitrogen can. of course, be economically obtained through growing cowpeas or other legu minous plants or by the use of stable manure. It is suggested here that no variety of the cowpea be used other than the Brabham and Iron, both of which are resistant to the nematode. Com mercial fertilizer applied in the row and as side applications, will give better re sults than where broadcasted. Two methods of laying off the field are used, the hill and the drill. With the first method the hills are laid off four to five feet both ways, thus per mitting of cultivation in both direc tions. From eight to ten seed are plant ed in each hill and after they have de veloped the second pair of leaves they are thinned to two in a hill. With the drill method the seed are scattered at intervals of three to four inches and thinned so as to have a single plant every tifteen to eighteen. The rows are five to six feet apart. The latter is the better method on all easily culti vated soils. It takes about a pound of seed to sow an acre. The essential points in cultivating are to keep down the weeds and grass, and to conserve moisture. This means that the cultivator should be run once a week from the time the plants come through until the vines cover the ground. At the last cultivation it is good practice to sow rows of cowpeas or peanuts between oE canta loupes. Thus a crop of hay can be produced later in the summer without any additional work. blight, a fungus disease of the foliage, will destroy entire fields of can taloupes during a few days of wet weather. this disease can be controlled by spraying the vines with Bordeaux mixtures. A test made during season of 1916. at Fitzgerald, Ga., demonstrated beyond a doubt, that this disseise can be prevented by spray ing the vines, that the vines can be kept healthy’ and the cantaloupe pro duction increased. Two spraying were made: one on June 2 and the other on June 19. The material was applied with a barrel pump, the foliage being covered thoroughly each time. About fifty gallons to the acre was used. For a patch of ten to twenty acres, a barrel spray pump will answer, but such for larger areas it will be necessary to have a power spray outfit such as is used in spraying peach, apple and pecan or chards. The formula used in making this Bordeaux mixture is as follows: Copper sulphate (bluestone! 4 lbs. I Dime, unslaked * *hs. | Water oO gal.. Dissolve the bluestone in 25 gallons of water. Slack the lime and mix it | with the other 25 gallons of water and | pour the two together at the same time, | preferably through some kind of a strainer. It is then ready for use. Sometimes cantaloupes are pulled too green or too ripe. Experienced pick ers judge when to pull them by the way the melon looks. This, of course re quires a great deal of practice. Until the meat of the cantaloupe turns sweet they are too green and as soon as the ■ blossom end softens they are too ripe. j By' noticing the general appearance cf • the cantaloupes, especially the under- | color, then by pulling and cutting a , few. the relationship between the gen eral appearance and the time to pull the fruit can lie established. For distant markets, pull as soon as the meat sweetens and for nearby markets, allow a day or two longer. A tendency has developed during re- | cent years in this state to use a flat Instead of a crate for shipping canta lc upes. The standard flat is 4 1-2x13x23 inches and the special 4 1-2x12x22 inches. Nine, twelve and fifteen are put in these flats and are considered standard packs. Sometimes irregular packs of six, seven and eight to the flat are made, the cantaloupes being usuallv wrapped in paper. The flat is especially suited for shipping canta loupes of exceptional merit. To put an ordinary cantaloupe into a flat and wrap ping it in paper, however, does not de ceive any one into thinking it a high class and exceptionally fine fruit. From, field to breakfast table canta loupes pass through many hands. The farmer packs and loads them in re- j frigerator cars. Often he sells to a buyer and the buyer in turn sends them to a distributor or commission house. The distributor sells to a retailer and he in turn to the consumer. In pass- ' ir.g through this cycle of trade, speed ] is desired, and, therefore, organization. > Well organized trade means that the word of the buyer is sufficient for a! distributor in another state, and the word of the distributor to the retailer j must be good or he will be asked to} refund whatever loss is sustained by' the retailer. Cantaloupe marketing is still affected i to some extent with speculators and dis-j honest agencies Seemingly, the only i way to prevent loss from the opera-. tions of these pirates of the trade is to have an organization large enough ( to keep in touch with the business from beginning to end. Where suspicious ’ things are done a representative of the growers can investigate. If suspicious then for the good of the business, legal proceedings should be started imme diately. , Calculations made by this department show that the following is the average cost of producing 300 flats per acre: Rent of land 15.00 | Seed 50c to SI.OO Fertilizer $7.50 to $15.00 Preparation and cultivation $4.00 to $7.50 300 flats ....$22,00 Picking, packing and inspecting.. $12.00 Total f 551.00 to $62.50 If the number of acres reported is taken in relation to the number of cars shipped, the average production is one car to nine acres. However, the produc tion of the farms under the observation of the college varies from one car to two acres to one car to twenty acres. By eliminating the poorer acres the average will be about* one car to four acres. PASTURE CROPS FOR HOGS. W. R. IT., Pelham. What will make the best pasture for h< gs from May to August ? The crops you mention can be planted to advantage on new ground such as you have recently reclaimed. If weevil in festation *is very bad in your section, you ought to cut your cotton acreage by at least one-half until you learn : how to deal,with this pest. There is everything in knowing how. When the weevil first came into many sections it practically destroyed the cotton crop, [ but farmers after becoming acquainted j w*iLh it learned how to grow a fa’.r j amount of cotton and hold its ravages ; under control. You should be able to sell peanuts to very good advantage to the oil mills. Velvet beans should be planted in your , corn rows. Use the ninety-day variety, i as it matures earlier and is a good yield er as well. You can count on a yield, I say, of fifteen bushels of velvet beans and upwards per acre, .and at the same time produce a normal crop of corn if seasonable .conditions are at all favor able. Peanuts will yield anywhere from i 1.000 to 2,000 pounds of nuts per acre. | If you can not sell them to the oil mills •to advantage, you can graze them down with hogs and make a return of $25 to S4O per acre by so doing. Where one ex pects to keep hogs and is troubled with lice and other vermin a dipping vat should be constructed. You can have one built out of heavy galvanized iron and sink 'it into the ground. It will last for a considerable length of time. We be lieve it better, however, to build a per manent structure of cement. A great variety of crops may be used for grazing down by hogs from May to August. In your section of the state you should plant an early maturing va riety of cow peas and soy beans as soon Ss the ground is warm enough to insure rapid germination. Peanuts can also be planted to advantage. Sprang sown rape should be available for grazing in April, and if you have some cereals, such as oats or wheat, you can graze these crops down to advantage by turning them on the crop just when the grain is passing out of the dough stage. Burt oats and Canada peas sometimes may be sown to advantage tn January and February to be grazed down in the early summer betore velvet beans and peatnuts become avail able. • • • VARIETIES} FOR BODE WEEVIL TER RITORY. R. F. 1"., Aihburn, Ga , writes: Please tell me if Simpkin’s Meal cotton is a good variety for the weevil of south Georgia. A number of varities of cotton can be grown with considerable success in south Georgia in sections infested by the boll weevil. Os course, the earlier the variety the greater the advantage it offers, because the sooner cotton can be brought to maturity the smaller amount of damage will the weevil inflict. A good variety of cotton for growth un der boll weevil conditions should there fore set th£ fruit early and rapidly. It should be possessed of many fruiting but few vegetative limbs. It should continue to grow upward and set squares throughout the growing season. The weevil prefers to burrow on young squares, and hence if these are forming late in the suipmer he will attack them and leave the early formed bolls to de velop. A survey of the varities of cot ton grown tn Georgia would indicate the Cleveland’s big boll, college No. 1, Poul not. Hooper’s, Hite’s Willet’s Ideal, Cov ington Toole, Cook's, Webber's 49, Cul pepper, Trice and Dixie are all good va rieties. Covington’s Toole is especially resistant to'the Xvilt disease, and should ! ■be grown on ground Infested by this d’s- ' ease. Miss., and began his practical agricultural work with the Mississippi Experiment Station. For nine years he was connected with the Kentucky Experiment Station, as Agronomist. In 1905 he was elected Director of the % South Carolina Experiment Station, one of the most progressive stations in the United States, which position he has resigned for this larger work with the Soil Im provement Committee, covering the entire South. Each has had wide training and experience with Southern Crops and Soils. Their advice vriß be sound, based upon actual experience through experiments.
