Fla., Jan. 16.—-With a Bible as his platform and ser mons as his political speeches, nianey J. Catls. just .inaugurated gov ernor of Florida, stands today the most unique figure in an American guberna torial chair! A retrxrmer of the new school, a pro hibitionist. with new but drastic ideas, a former minister of the gospel who hasn't forsaken his religion. Catts en tered the staxe house after righting inori da’s most strenuous political battle, de feating the regular nominee of the all powerful Democratic party by pitting lUblical quotations against mudslinging! His Bible will remain on the gover nor’s desk until his term ends four years hence and to it he will turn for counsel, rather than to political ad visers—so Catts declares. CHOKING THE DEVIE "I have literally choked the devil out of politics in Florida,” declares the new governor, ~and the devil is due another choking. 1 hope to have enacted legis lation tliat will make our primary laws so plain and simple there will be no chance for fraud.’’ Catts entered a five-cornered race for the Democratic nomination for governor last spring. On th*! face o* the re turns he was the winner over his near est opponent by a few hundred votes and received a 1 certificate of nomina tion. A recount of certain precincts was demanded by the opposing side, and granted by the courts, and after months of suspense and rechecking of votes a new certificate of nomination was awarded to W. V. Knott. Feeling he had not been treated fairly Catts announced he would enter the gen eral election despite the Democratic oer tificnAe of normnaition held by his op ponent. In years gone by such a move would have meant political suicide in Florida, but a political revolution swept over the state in the fail of 1911. and Catts came out a victor by an overwhelming majority. Thus for the first time since the re construction days Florida, has a gov ernor not the regular nominee of the Democratic party. Catts is the "home” type of man genial. religious, industrious. FYllls and airs are as distatsteful to him as a high ball would be to Wllham J. Bryan. His administration, therefore, will not be marked by "brilliant social events,” but visitors to the mansion will receive such a welcome as can be given only by a genuinely southern hosL VIEWS ON RELIGION. Discussing his views on religion and politics Catts says. "I believe there is a place in politics for religion and the Bible. Prohibition of liquor traffic should go hand in hand religion, and blend in the political arena. “The late campaign in Florida has demonstrated the upward tendency of thought in this state. We exposed ir regularities in the primary. This proved the Bible should be in politics. The strongest law on this subject—stronger than state statute or constitution —is from one of the ten commandments: Thou shalt not steal!’ "We are going to clean and purify pol itics in Florida. In order to do this, it will be necessary to rule whisky out.” Catts has only one eye. but that blazes with the fury of two as he illustrates, in the executive chamber, how he intends to "choke the devil out of politics!” Declares No German Would Annex Belgium LONDON, Jan. 12. —Prof. Hans Del brueck. of the University of Berlin, says that nobody in Germany wishes to an nex Belgium, according to a dispatch to the Exchange Telegraph company from The Hague quoting the Deutsche Korrespondenz. Prof. Delbrueck is quoted as saying: "It would be impossible to put Ger man garrisons in Belgium in peace time since the troops would not be able even to pass in the streets safely unless the police and administration of justice were also taken over. This would amount to placing Belgium under per petual military law which is impossi ble. There is no middle course between incorporating Belgium in the German empire which nobody wants and evacu ating it.” GIRLS! Out of \ CATT/*.Z Politics'” to Photo by Tallahassee Suffragettes Plan to Picket White House 1,000 Strong March 4 WASHINGTON, Jan. 12.—The Con gressional Union tor Woman Suffrage announced today that plans for a parade March 4, the day before the inaugura tion. have been abandoned and the suf frage demonstration instead would be an elaboration of the White House picketing and that more than 1,000 women will form a close cordon about’ the White House grounds on that day. Although the temperature was eleven degrees below freezing and a cold wind was blowring, the twelve suffrage “silent serninebs” again took up their picketing today. At the White House it was said that the president’s invitation for the sen tinels to cope inside the executive man sion and wirm themselves still stood. When President Wilson returned from golf, the silent sentinels stood at salute with right hands raised to their hats. The president smilingly returned the sa lute, noticing the sentinels for the first time. As the day wore on the sentinels got so cold they were marched up and down in squads with military precision. Cruiser Milwaukee Grounds; Doubtful if She Can Be Floated EUREKA, Cal., Jan. 14.—The United States cruiser Milwaukee went on the shore near this point Saturday. The Mil waukee was aiding in an attempt to salvage the submarine H-3, which went ashore several weeks ago. Tugs were sent to the assistance of the Milwaukee which was said to be in no immediate danger. The Milwaukee is a firstclass cruiser, assigned to duty as tender for coast torpedo vessels. The Milwaukee grounded inside the first line of breakers in a dense fog. Marine experts here said it was doubtful if she could be floated. Child of Four Bums To Death at Albany ALBANY, Ga, Jan. 12.—Annie Davis Leary, the four-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Leary, died late last night of burns received at her par ents home in this city. The little girl was playing with a broom while her father was outside milking the cow ana the mother was in their store next door. The broom caught fire and the flames were transferred to her clothing. iler mother came to her rescue when she heard her screams but too late to save her life. It Works! Wiley Neal’s Body Is Found in the Woods With Bullet in Heart (Special Dispatch to The Journal.) CALHOUN. Ga., Jan. 18.—Wiley Neal, who is a young farmer and a member of one of Gordon county’s prominent fam ilies, committed suicide some time yes terday afternoon on his farm near Fair mont by shooting himself through the heart with a shotgun. Bad health is as signed as the cause, as the deceased had been in a poor # state of health for some time. Yesterday at noon Neal left his home, telling his wife he was going to the woods to cut some firewood, carry ing his axe and gun with him. His wife’s suspicions were aroused by the fact that it was unusual for him to car ry his gun with him, and when he failed to return home at night she summoned some neighbors and a search was at once begun. The searching party soon found the body in the woods where Neal had gone to work, with one barrel of his shotgun discharged, the load hav ing entered his heart, and a forked stick lying near, which he had used in pull ing the trigger. The deceased was about thirty years of age and leaves a wife and one child. He is prominently connected in Fairmont and Calhoun. Lewis to Be Absolved From Blame If More Evidence Is Not Found PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 12/-Coroner Knight, who has been looking into the murder of Mazie Colbert, the advertis ing art model, said today that unless more direct evidence was found con necting him with the case, he would not instruct a jury at the inquest to render a verdict that Bernard W. Lewis, of Pittsburg, was the slayer. The coroner said that only circum stantial evidence has been found to link Lewis’ name with the death of Miss Colbert, and that It would be an injus tice to the Lewis family to place the responsibility for the crime upon him. District Attorney Rotan and the de tective bureau today continued to exam ine witnesses. The district attorney reiterated that he is of the belief that Lewis killed the girl. The police are looking for a negro chauffeur formerly employed by Miss Colbert, and also for his wife. They de sire to question them regarding their relations with the girt Manning Moves for Fire Companies’ Return (Special Dispatch to The Tournal ) COLUMBIA, S. C., Jan. 12.—A bill, which it is thought, if passed, will al low the fire insurance companies to re turn to South Carolina, was sent to the legislature today by Governor Manning and promptly Introduced in both houses. It allows the companies to maintain rating bureaus to make their own rates, but on complaint of any rate by the com missioner the matter will be referred to a commission of three to be appointed by the governor who will have the right to review rates and if found unreason able or execessive to fix a new rate. Six bills dealing with the fire insurance sit uation were introduced in the legislature One repeals the valued policy clause and another provides for fire inquest law and a modern building code. The bills were unanimously agreed on by the special commission and recom mended by Governor Manning. They re peal the Laney-Odom anti-compact law. It is generally understood that the new I bills will meet with favor from the big ; fire insurance companies and that they ! will resume business in the state, all j having withdrawn following the passage of the Laney-Odom anti-compact bill one i year ago. Senator Laney, the author of ! this measure, was a member of the spe cial commission and introduced the new i bills in the senate. Bar ' low were returned yesterday by the grand juy in connection with the closing of the Wesoto Banking company at De soto, near here, last week. Carter Is under arrest and Arthur had already given bond under a warrant issued last week. Commits Suicide by Jumping Into Well WAYCROSS, Ga.. Jam 12.—Albert Jackson, employed at a still fourteen miles southwest of Waycross, ended his life today by jumping into a well con taining about nine feet of water. He nad been sick several months, and re cently said he had as soon be dead as in his condition. Coroner Walker in vestigated the case, the jury returning a verdict of suicide. FATH DAUGHTER LYING PROSTRATE IN FIRE SUMMERVILLE, Ga., Jan. 12.—Miss Emma Bailey, daughter of R. H. Bailey, a resident of South Summerville, fell in the fire today about 12 o’clock. Mrs. Bailey had gone to the kitchen to place dinner on the table. When Mr. Bailey came into the house he found his daughter prostrate with her head and arm in the grate. Bfl i ® o3C Street (Spell out name with per.dl, very, very plainly J DODGE COUNTY TO EMPLOY TWO DEMONSTRATORS EASTMAN, Ga., Jam 12.—At an en thusiastic meeting of representative citizens of Eastman and Dodge county, held at the city hall, plans were com pleted whereby a farm demonstrator and home economics demonstrator for Dodge county during the year 1917 will be employed. Reports were made showing that for the employment of a farm demonstrator $1,200 had been raised, while $1,200 is assured for putting on a home economic demonstrator. The sentiment of the meeting was that home talent should be employed for the new positions if possible. A committee, consisting of County School Commis sioner M. W. Harrell, W. L. Jessup and W. J. Daniels, was appointed to make application for an appropriation from the Smith-Lever fund for the farm demonstrator and were instructed by the meeting to recommend to Prof. J. Phil Campbell, of the State Agricultural col lege, Athens, who has in charge the se lection of the farm demonstrator, that Mr. R. F. Burch, Jr., be named for this position.
