It is said tn lie S'dire- wliat !tk« fa.ltli. in that it is •• rite substatic of tilings hoped for.” It is the language o aTection. the echo of love, the coocootra tion of Idiss; it is of “good report,” am pleasing to our ears; it is eloquence “dwell ing with sweet accents upon the Ups.” I is both vocal ami instrumental ‘harmonise in a language and with sentiment into li gible in all languages ami in all ages. It i- ttie ‘zeal' of n lather’s blessing, the‘witness’ of a mother’s love, the ‘guarantee’ of ; brother's protection, the ‘surety’ of a sis ter’s devotion, the. ‘gate’ to a lover’s heav on. and somethi g that mere friends liav* not'iing to do with. It is very iadtionaldc for Jfisses of j-. ceitaiu age to insist that ‘it is all lonlish and decidedly silly.’ We never hear sue! an expression without thinking of a eir c imstauce that actually occurred some wuere in Indiana, if we tightly reinembei A gentleman stopped at a house hy tin ways de for information as to the route in was taking, and found a woman ironing with her imle child trying to amuse liei self on the floor, the little, one was sotm two and a half years old, very neatly dressed, evidently scrupulously cared fm. and eminently handsome The gentle man w itile talking to the mother, picked up the child and kissed it; the iittie otic looked up in such perfect astonishment, that the gentleman remarked. ‘Why. m\ little deal, one would think you were not used to being kissed.’ The mother an- sweied for the child, *1 don’t believe, sii, lliatslie was ever kissed before in bet life Tin sure I never did such a tlcn;, an< never knew its lather to do so.’ • I.ov ba* e m< rty on that child, a id send it t< ■Somebody to love it,’ was the gentleman’:- f.rayer, as he made sute that his waller was in its place, and took himself out o! the house s;s fast as possible. Not D know the holy kiss of a mother, the iond ling embrace of a father, the earnest lip press of brother and sister, is to fail in tin development of the soul in an essential and vital degree; anti surely wlmt is so w n drottsly Indy in infancy, so refining ii childhood, so worthy in parents, and s. ] revalent upon the hearthstone, is not a matter to he disposed of with a sneer, oi dismissed with a ‘pooh!’ Kissing, like the maniage hells or tin- blessed truth.of the blessed lhlde, nevi i wears out; it is like them, always new, fresl and interesting; and for the same reason namely, it deals with the affections, whicl unlike the intellect, lo^es tlie familiar: delight in the old, and is coy of the nev and strange. The variety of kisses is no: small. There is the kiss paternal, tin kiss lraternal. the kiss connubial, (am pie-connubial.) and the kiss promiscuous. The last two varieties are the only ones tii which we object. We have oftei thought in reference to the kiss promis ctiotts. one of the blessing ot the mai o'er the woman consisted in being reliev ed ol his conventional duty. It seems t. ns. in verv many instances, like casting peaiIs hefoie swine, and in iliusnation o: the old adage familiarity breeds contempt A man or a woman who makes liimsel or lierse.fcommon in this respect inns ti t wonder if they are not alwaj s ajqire cated.
