served to Nancy, that Tom was so bashful he
n ver.could tell her how much be loved her,
'at d'therefore he would persuade him to address
her by letter. Soon after, Trumbull wrote the
fi l owing witty lines, and sent them to Nancy,
without the knowledge of Wooster, but sail*
concern'd knew that it was the production of
Trumbull, none were offended, and it became
tiie subject of frequent mirth at their family par

that timet but this communication was taken
from the origin*I,found a few years since in the
drawer of the table occupied by Trumbull anti
Wooster, and all others -who subsequently stu
died law in that office. •
To thee, Dear Nancy, thee my sweeting,
Poor Colonel Thomas sendeth greeting:
Whereas, an pleas’d the powers above,
I’m fallen most desp’rately In lovei
For Cupid took a station sly,
I*, one bright corner of your eye,
And from his b w let fly rdirt,*
V Idch miss d my ribs arid pierc’d my heart s
Pierc’d through and through, and passing
further,
Put t)i my insides out of order.
Nor this the only plague I found;
• Love entered at the viewless wound ;
A* Mice into a Cheese will creep
Through some small scratch, and entering
deep, . .
While all without look* fair and well, ,
The* t-ave your cheese an empty shell.
8o tlViqyish love, when once got through,
Stole and bore off my heart to you,
Ann left me heartless still at ease
An empty shell, like ’foresaid cheese.
I, Colonel Tom, being in great smart,
Btreech thee to return my heart ;
Or else to cure my ceaseless moan,
Make an exchange, and send your own.
Oh! Nancy, thee I love more fully
Then ever Iludibras lov’d Tully,
Net JEneas of old, nor Dido,
Could loveone half so much as 1 do; *
I hold my Nancy more a God less
Th»n Vtiiusgay, or Dian modest j .
Throughout the world thy glories shine,
Nor hath the Sun such power as thine ;
Thy beauty keeps the world together,
Thy looks make fair the cloudy weather;
Arid if a drougnt shou’d come again,
If you should frown 1 know ’twould rain.
For you the earth produces flowers.
For you clouds drop in lovely showers:
Fruits only grow that yuu may eat,
And pies and calves to find you meat.
Your cheering smiles which we observe,
Sh’iuldycu withdraw, the world would starves
Earth would refrain her wonted store,
* And plumbs and peaches be no more.
Oh! Nancy I would you love but me,
H iv mighty glad poor Tom would be;
I’d sqjrk to you like pitch forever,
Not ctlinge nor fate <ur love should sever.
: Then love me, Nancy, for I tell you .
I . » pretty clever fellow,
A>4you must thiuk ’t:« true, for why ?
N- cnecan tell as well as I:
T re follow then, without objections,
Th*r •* rent-roll” of poor Tom’s perfections.
Know thefi, all woman kind, that I,
When stretch’d out straight, am six feet high,
IV hence from plain reasoning it appears
I’m one of nature’s grenadiers;
CYetl do whisper this between us—
Serve only in the wars of Venus.)
I’m fair, ; and one good sign observe is,
I have red hair, Ma’am, at your service.
Of wit I brag not, yet have brains
Enough to walk in when it rains;
I know the oddx ’twist cheese and chalk,
To tell a handsaw from a hawk;
1 To cane a man if he abuse me,
And bang myself if you refuse me.
