To Mordecai Sheftall, 8er»V. Esq.
tSmt—Youlfkve again placed yourself
before the public as a candidate for a bijjh
[and important appointment. In thutbring-
ing yourself before the community, you
have not excited my surprise, since the
knowledge 1 have of your character led
the to expect such a course, and more par*
ticularly whqja JgflUcoxered your secret
operations in connexien with some of your
satellites, who go hind in hand in your
political intrigues. You have ctfcently
declared that you were nut a candidate for,
the State Legislature ami in a few. days af
ter have the unblushing effrontery to an
nounce yourself a canditlaltffur the Senate.
.Such conduct,Sir, such political incousitK
tency, cun uiily bo reconciled iir. the con:
templatioti that ii emahaier. from yoursillf.
It is the iiH'mh ing oTa political cunning and
duplicity which will ahvjys in the end*
detect you,‘and destroy your hopes of poli>
ticnl elevation, ' : .
But yourgonius and.acquirement in the
ijeie-i.v of politics have not, 1 hope, yet
devised the means of securing you a seat
in the Senate of Georgia.
The signal defeat of the past year, which
ci nsigned you to your humble .station in
society, the strong expression of the pub
lic feeling against you in this community
should have deterred you From again ob-
troding you- Velf as a candidate/for public
favor, lint yourtemerity .and vanity seen)
to have totally disregaided the public sen
timent, and w« again find you reudy to
meet the'froivns of the people uud the mdr-
titirnti. o of 'another defeat. The people
you seek to represent me too ,virtuous, too
just, loo discriminating to countenance a
course of conduct which sets modesty at
defiance, and which is calculated /o bring
down aspersions upon the community in
Which they live.
After such a defeat, you should have en-_
dcavured to imitate (.'ce.-tar, who, because
his . head was bald, covered that defect
with laurels—and when you had cuvered
Youi defect-) it would then be time, and
nw till <hen, to ask for honors from a Vir
tuous community,
Seneca thought modeSly so great a check
to Vice, that lie prescribes the practice qfc
it in secret j and if you had but followed
this wholesome prescription, we should
ha 1 d found you, at least for some years
to cointf, bftd eavbring to pn.fi! by a few

But ydu have thought proper to pursue
a course offensive (0 those around you,
which bids defiance Id public Opinion—
which fecommeuds impudence as gnou

in countenance,- not because he is innocent,
Virtuous and wise but because he is shame
less and vicious.

yob been called on by’ the people to oppose
that gentleman? are you more competent
to represent the county ? are you more vir.
tuouB or are your claims better founded?
*’ these ate questions which temerity alone
will answer in the affirmative.”
You have, sir, fully evinced that you are
actuated by no principle which takes in a
prospect Of your country’s welfare, but
that which catches at the applause of the
multitude, and which serves only to ag
grandize yourself.
You profess to be opposed to a distin
guished citizen of our district for a seat in
Gena'te of the United States, arid have of
fered to the public under an assumed' ap-
.pellation (not adapted to yourself or your
subject) the giounds of your opposition.
