As there has been considerable alarm in

The Delegation of Choctaw Chiefs, at
present at Washington city, wore intro
duced to Gen La Fayette last week. They
severally addressed tlie General, and when
he set out on his route to Baltimore they
accompanied him a part of the way, then

ofthe Navy,lias been suspended from duty
preparatory to his trial* upon charges re
lating to his conduct while in commnnd of
the squadron in tbe Pacific, and that it

Francis B aker, Esq. late Editor of the
Natchez Mississippian, on his way from
Natchez,. early in this month, to New
Jersey, Was murdered near Mayslick,
Kentucky, and his body found near the
road about seven to eight days after the
murder Was committed. Mr Isaac Desha
as taken up, on suspicion of having per
petrated the deed, and was to he exatmtt-

TRICK.
A new opera uuder this title U to lie
produced at thcChathum Garden Theatre
this evening. It is written by Mr • hficiih
Hawkings, of this city, who is celebrated
for lus originality, and great fund of hum*
our. The scenes of this play arc in this
state, on the grand canal. The * piece w
wholly original, tho music very good, and
the scenery splendid and entirely new, and
wo understand cost about five hundred
dollars. It will no doubt probuce crowded
houses, rewarding the; manager for his ex
ertions to bring it forward in a spendid
manner, and for his encouragement of na
tive talent.

UNCOMMONLY LONG NAME.
A very gentlemnnly, fresh colored, ro
bust looking man, having grey hair, M as
yesterday undergoing an examination be
fore the Mayor, charged, as, we under
stood,-with no legal ostensible means of
living, and who having under false and
fraudulent pretexts, obtained money from
various respectable individuals, and of
having curried on a-scene of deception in
several parts of the Uilited States since
the year 1808. In 1816 he was delivered
up by thcf’lhte Governor Snyder to the au
thorities of theSratc of New York, as a
fugitive from justice.
It appeared in evidence, that he had at
different times passed under the following

Costa, alias Joseph Dc Costa, alius Mari
no, nljas Moreno, allasCarlos De Moria,
alias Marques Dc Monscrat, alias JusvM.
Dc Mora, Doctor of Law—which last
name he claimed ns his proper cognomen
and,further that he was 65 years old,
native of Peru, hut had been generally cn
gaged in diplomatic service jn-thp Span
ish Colonies, Or in Old Spain, where he
was a memlie r of the Cortes.

Shocking Affair—A gentleman - yester
day related the following sad occurrence,
which took place at Snyder’s Mills on the
20 mile creek, U. C. He way on the

had in-his store examining. There u'erc
also, two men present, when Mr M.Gill
and his elOrk were examining the powder
which had been damp, and lmd some
lumps in it of the size of alien’s egg. The
powder was within 6 dr 8 feet from t he fire.
Just at this'time Dr Sampcl Woodruff, of
the plqce, stepped in and taking up one of
the lumps tossed it into the fire. It explc
ded, throwing Out coals which communi
cated to the rest and the whole burnt. I.
blew up the roofof the store, which fell in
broke all the crockery in the store, and
iujured the goods, and most distressingly
burnt the clerk, Mr M’Gill and Dr Wood
ruff, who are in a hopclcs state of recover
The clerk had a sinew drawn out of his
arm from the back of his hand. The loss
of goods amounts to 81000. The other

from a report presented to the Legislature
on the 25thult. that tho Prison-cost the
State the last year 6520> dollars, which
sum includes the saluries of the. keepers.
There were 73 convicts in coiifipomen at
tlie time tlie report was drawn up, viz;—
71 males and 2 females—whites 50, free
blacks 21, and slaves 2. The average
cost of maintaining the prisoners is. 834

The brig Aurora, Capt. Tucker, arri
ved at Boston, in 34 days from Murauhapi
