, Register of Debates in Congress.
PROSPECTUS.
A CCORDING to an intimation heretofore given,
there wiil be published at the Office of the
National Intelligencer, daring the next session of
Congress, ami, if encouraged by the approbation
of the Public, at every session thereafter, a RE
GISTER OF DEBATES IN CONGRESS, intend
edto comprehend a more full RcjKirt of the Speech
es on topics of general interest, in each House of
Congress, than has ever heretofore been published,
or than can be given to the Public through the or
dinary and limitedclmnnel, the columnsof a news
paper. This compilation will be of tbo most nu
Ithcntic cast, printed with great regnrd to accuracy,
and in a form for durable preservation.
This undertaking is not of course intended to
substitute or supercede the Reports of Debates for
(lie National intelligencer, but rather, by with
drawing the heavy and extended Reports from Its
columns, to enable the Proprietors of thnt Journal
to furnish, every day, in u comprehensive form,
intelligible Reports of the Proceedings and Dis.
missions in the day preceding, on both Houses,
The “Reoistfr" is necessarily an experiment;
but it is un experiment the success of which we
see no reason to doubt. Every one who takes an
interest in our politicnl history, as well iisall those
who engage in the duties of political life, must
have felt and lamented the wunt of a Record' of
Debates iijtCongress, in a convenient form, .with
indexes which might lead the enquirer to anV sub
ject debated, and to the name of any one who en
gage din debate. fjur.li n work would bo a.11 ele
mentary book for young politicians, and we have
no hesitation iu asserting that the : possession of
such a one, from the commencement Ortho exist
ing government to this day, would be of immense
vnlueto the nation, were it only to shew wl.ntijas
heretofore been said upon questions, which nre
continually recurring for discussion,..ami product
ing needless consumption of lirtie Bymperlujous
debate. Wliut is true of the years that have, past,
will, as soon as they nre gone, be equaily true of
those in whichWe live. -
It is not only, therefore, as a vehicle of present
Information, but also as a book for future reference
