On motion of Mr. Tritnblcso to amend
it as to include the correspondence as to
piracies of other Spanish islands, as well
as that of Cuba, Mr. Camhreleng accept
ed the amendment, and the resolve was
then adopted, nem con.
VIFtOtNIA CLAIMS.
Mr. A. Stevenson, of Va. rose to ask
the attention ot" tlie lion e to a subject
which was interesting to Virginia, and me
rited an early consideration. It related
to the unsatisfied claims of that state for
advances of money made by her for use of
the Genoral Government during the late
war. The subject; Mr. S. said had been
presented to Congress by the President,
in a very strong message, at the last ses-
sion;bur,owing to circumstances unnccessn
rv t6 mention, had not been acted on. He
wished ittakenup, andfinally disposed of.
This was due as well to this Government
as to Virginia, nnd with that view he beg-
gedleave to submit the following resolu
tion :
“Resolved, That the Committee on
Military Affairs be instructed to inquire
into the propriety of providing by law for
the reimbursement pf the amount of in
terest,paid by the state of Virgiuiaon loans
of money negotiated by her for the use of
the General government during the late
war bctwcenGrcat Britain and theUnitcd
States.” . - •
Mr Sharpe of N. Y. moved to amend the
resolution so as to refer the subject to the
Committee of Ciaims, which was carried,

Thus amended, the resolution was a-
greed to.
On motion of Sir Allen, it was

and Means be instructed to inquire into
the expediency of reducing the duty on
the importation of brown sugar.
Mr. Wickliffe moved to amend the re
solution by adding the words “and molas-
“ wliich motion was lost. [M. W. un
defstood, when lie made this motion, that
the resolve proposed to increase the duty
on brown sugar, instead of proposing to
reduce it.
The question was then put upon agree
ing to the resolution, and it passed in the
negative.

lishing a post route from the Creek Agen
