It Is said (says the Democratic Press of the 4th
inst.) that accounts have been received at the City
of Washington, that the French squadron in the
Vit Indies, were about to land its troops at the
Havana, and take possession of the Island of
Cube. Whether this movement was or was not'
by virtue of a treaty of cession frem Spain, we
have not heard; but presume, It possession shall
he taken by France, that it will be under the au
(hority of a Spanish Treaty. It issaid that the in
formation excited some Sensation-at Washington
where it was rumoured, that the Franklin and
Ohio, seventy fours, wduld immediately he man
ned and equipped and sent on the West India
station, to protect American commerce and pro
perty. We do not wish to be understood to vouch
for the truth of nny pnrt of this statement, but we
;vould wish distinctly to be understood, to betruly
detailing what we heard from a gentlemen who
inoy have been misinformed* but who is incap
able of misrepresentation.

THE LAKES.—Wo stntcd, in our
Inst pAper, says the Salem Observer, on
the information of a friend, thut the Board
of British Surveyors had been engaged
for two ycnis, in making a survey of the
Lake country. The gentlemen has since
informed us that we misunderstood him
respecting the time of tho surveyors’
service. They nro nnder the direction
of the Admiralty Bourd in England, and
have been engaged for ten years in tnnk-
tilg surveys of tlio Lakes only. They be
gan on Luke Ontario, completed the Sur
veys of Superior during the present sum
mer. The Survey of Lake Hu»ou alone
occupied two years. Tho Board of Ad
miralty are now in the possession of cor
rect charts of the Lakes, drawn from «n
accurate Survey, and if bur suspicions are
correct, theyhnve obtained much better
information respactin,? these inland seas,
than our owu government. The eVents
of tbe last war taught the Lords of the
Admirnlfy tho importance of tnnking
these Surveys, nnd should future occurren
ces afford them an opportunity to avail
