This disease has been very acuratoly described hyman) medical writers bui how little It lips been understood, the want of success \ri\iili attends the gener al mode of treatment, too plainly shows.. Let us take one example to altlhWfiWHKW assertion- Heapt burn,or sour, stomaoh,be ing often a very trdHblesomo symptom, of this complaint, the attention was . natural- ly directed in search or somc-ttrtieloi, that -should have tho power of removing it. The'absorbent earttytns they -are called, were fixed npon as-themost likely mean*‘of obviating this distressing symptom. The ealcareous preparations were tried, but their constipating effect* on the bowels rendered them Inadmissible', in rntionnl, practice. Magnesia, as il was found W pos sess the same power of neutralizing tho a- cid which gjves rise to the heart-burn, was then liad recourse to, and has-been exhibi ted with a liberal hand; Did this acidity, or sourness of the stomach, arise from any quantity of acid accidentally present In ■that organ, then a dose of magnesia would do every thing that could be wished •, but in every, oasc where heart, but n is one of the . symptoms, It arises from a cnn^glit forma tion of acid, and is ilcpeni ont upon a de bilitated state of the, nrg ns concerned in digestion. First, from a deficiency, or morbid state of secretion of tlie bile, which is plainly pointed out by the general topof of thebowels. ■ : -Secondly from tlie vitiated state of tlie gnstrlc juice itself, which is unfitfor produ cing a proper chemical solution ofthc food, in order to the preparation of a healthy chyle; and, in the third place, from w dl- .minished action or a paralytic state of the. tlactoals, arising from tho want of that nat ural stimulus, which excites thenfinto ac tion, and which is effected by the chemical mixture of a healthy gastric juice witli the food j so that, from tlio want of that excite- mciit, tlioy become unfit for separating •ehjllo sufficiently pure for the duo nourish merit'of the body; - From this view of tho subject, we See that oil the good that magnesia can do, is to it- frita wjtit the acid in the'siomaoh, and then prdduce tho same effect as any common purgative; for, as it posscssesno tonic paw or whatever, it noVor chn remove tlmtdebll ity of the digestive organs which gives rhe to the formation Of-this acid, and, of course never 'can restore that tone to the patfs, which is necessaryto a hedlthy digestion.
