Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaini’s Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to state what T know
about, thd introduction nf his medicine into
the Aims House—and I consider it a duty,
to comply.Wlth.liis re'qlt st.
Being President of the Board of Mana
gersof the Alms House in.-the.year 1820,
Mr. Swaim expressed to me a Wish to un
dertake, tho, euro of seme persons then in
the liouse, witoie cases were given up as in
curable by the medi'dal gentfenibn. lhat he'
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require no
other compensation -than the satisfaction
to be derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so; but I found that some of
the medical .gentlemen in the house had.
labored to prejudice them, as somo of them
attempted to prepossess mo against what
they denominated quackery. SoBe of the
managers felt inclined to tile trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical men which were to bo opera
ted upon, no harm at lealt would be done,
.and if cure was, practicable, the opportlm-
ty .ought to be afforded, but they expressed;
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon,
them; by which! understood that they did
not like to p.ut themselves in' opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon*
myself whatever responsibility.there was in
tlie.cate, anti notified Mr. Sa-aiffl that K
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case selected ■ was that of a woman,
whoso appearance was horrib’e, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients in tlie same room wished to have hei
removed, and the evidence of my o,vn sen
ses justified their oomplaint. She ivns a
wAtnan qf .aliout 30 or 92 years of age. her
right eye was already, destroyed, the left
eye piotruded mdre 'than half an iftch out;
of the socket, the flesh of tlie left cheek was
ono complete ulcer, the flesh of the nose
had disappeared and left tlie nostrils two
naked hplcs, -the tippet lip on the left side
was destroyed, and .the. teeth and gums
hare, andiffe whole-face, asdt appeared to
me, in. a stato of dissolution; tier appetite
had left her—sbo represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr. Swaim said
ho.could oure her; ho could not restore the
lost eye, nor roBtoro the nose, but ho coitld
restore the (eft-eye and'the mouth.
Ho undertook the e.itSn, and I frequent-
ly attended hitp in his visits to the poor
woman, and she was jotrred—and I have
frequently keen her since, going- about Iter
ordinary business with tlie alacrity _ usual
to a person of that age; tlie doformily of
course remained ’-, but nil that remained
besides appearod healthful . I have eon
filled, myself to tills case, Upon which
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may destroy worms, hut they de
bilitate the stomach, and often materially
injure the general health. Swaih's Ver
mifuge has the peepljjtr advantage uf.de-
stroying aiffl . riirtltivlng worms from the
towels without the weakening consequen
ces of the stronger purgatives.. fit-c.—and
it has, moreover, a decided tendency to
give, vigor bntli to the stomach and bowels
and organs of digestion—thereby relieving
the genaral system,final ynanv troublesome
complaints. It'll by this means that so
many grown peisous have been relieved,
bu its use, of different complaints—suppo
sing themselves to ha in a decline, Sec. Sic
This medicine wild relieve bowel com
plaints or dysentery, bf lions .cholic,.vomit-

children or grown persona, in a few hours l

ver on fever aode. No family ought:
or ever will be without it, after a trial.
■ Worms aro capable of _projbicing great
disturhanaes in tlie system. Not only do.
they aggravate nrdinary diseases when they
are present, but tiiqy also give rise to a
great variety of vcfv alarming anomalous
affections. Tlie whole train of spasmodic Si.
convulsive diseases may proceed from the
irritation of worms in the alimentary ennal.
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus.{pa
ralysis, mania, cnhvulsjons. as well as a
variety of other nervods and convulsive’
affections, are not unfrequenlly the imme
diate effects of this CRpse. Besides these
diseases, worths have also been known to
produce pleuritic and rheumatic pains,dys
entery, remitting fever, dropsy Of tile brain,
chrohic.nnd spasmodic cough, &c. Arc.

Among the symptoths which indicate;
the presence nf worms, the following are
tto most common and striking:—A. pale,
leaden-coloured, and occasionally flushed
countenance; a-bluish streak Under the
eyes, these are dull and heavy, the pupils
are dilated and m.uclt contracted, the low
er eyelids ind upper lip swell, especially
during tlie night while sleeping; great
itching in the nostrils, which causes . the
patient to piqk bis nose; .foul breath; dis
turbed sleep; during which the' patient
grindsltis teeth, it apt to scream Out and
start up suddenly as’ if frightened: tingling
in the ears; giddiness; interrupted speech;
palpitation of the heart a dry spasmodic
cpngh; irregular and depraved appetite,
being sometimes entirely-suppressed, and.
at others exceedingly voracious; gl domen’
swelled and hard; looseness of the bow els:

pains in the bowels; avasting of the, flesh;
