WM. SWAIM.
September. 1858.
The'’ following certificate gives the his-
toryrflf the introduction oftl e Panacea into
tho Pldladelphia Alms House Infirmary.’
Those who [read it, will he cnnvinced that
thi proprietor has never feared the investi
gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
tlmso who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicine from this institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, nfter it had been introduced. .
From william duane, Esq.
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor nf a medical com
position called Swaim's Panacea, applied
tome, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of |iis medicine into
the Alms House—and I consider it > duly
to comply with his requ st.
Being President of the .Board of Mana
g'eis of tlio Alins Mouse in’the.year 1850.
•Mr. Swaim expressed to me a wish to un-
dnjrtnke. the cure of some persons then in
tlie house,* whose eases were.given up as in-
curable by the medical gentlemen; that he
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the mojtjdespefate—and would require no
Other compensation tltaii tilt satisfaction
to be-derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so; Imt I found that some of
the medical gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice them, as some of t|ratu
attempted to prepossess me.against what'
they denominated qqaekery. Some of tho
managers felt inclined tn the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical men which were to'he opera
ted upon, no harm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the oppnrtunb-
ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood tiiat they did
out like to put themselves in opposition to.
tlio physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
ntyself whatever responsibility there was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swain) that I
would accompany him, and tljd so. The
first case selected was.that of p woman
whose appearanoe.was horrib'c, and wliose
condition was so deplorable that the p:

Worms being .espeera’ly apt to Infest
persons of debilitated digestive organs and
emaciated constitutions, uiirch mischief is
often done by tlie ordinary worm ‘medi
cines, which generally consist of lIk- strong
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, narco
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may destroy worms, but they dc-
bilit.ite the stomach, and often materially
injure the general health. Swaim’s Vkr-
Miruqy has the peculiar advantage of de
stroying and removing worms from the
bowels without tlie weakening consequen

it has, jnoreover, a decided tendency to

Worms are capable of producing great
disturbsheps-itfttiesystem. 'Not only do
ilrey aggravate ordinary diseases when they
are present, but they also give rise to a
great variety of very-alarming nnomaloits
nffeption*. The wholo train .»fspasmodic &

irritation of worms in the alimentary canal.
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus', pa-
ralvsis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety of other nervous and- convulsive
affections, are not unfrequently the imme
diate effects of this cause. Besides these
diseases, worms have also been known to
