FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq. One of the .Ahlr.rmcn of the City oj I'hi ladeipiiia. Mr.Swaim, prnprAcior of a medical com position called Swahn's Panacea, applied to me, requesting me to state what l know about the introduction of his medicine into tho-Alins I louso—and I consider it a duty to comply with his requ st. Doing President of the Rouril of Mann •ers of the Alms House in the veBr 1820, dir. Swaim expressed lo me a wish to un., dortuko tlm cure of some persons then in the house, whom cases were given Upas in curable bv the medical gentlemen, that he wits confident of curing by Ills medicine, those cases, nnd would undertake some of the most despejrpte—and would require no other compensation than tlie satisfaction to be derived from the service reudered. I.promised to consult the other mnna gars, and did so; but I found flint some of the medical gentlemen in the .house had labored to prejudice them, as somo-of then! attempted to prepossess me against what they denominated quaokery. Some of the managers felt inclined to the trial, consid ering that a*sthoy were cases abandoned by the medical men which were .to bp opera ted upon, no lidrm at least would be done, and if cure was practicable, the opportuni ty ought to be afforded, but they expressed •a’ reluctance to take any responsibility iipon them; by which I understood that they did not like to put themselves in opposition to the physicians. Others opposed it alto gether. I therefore oflTcrcd and took upon, myself whatever responsibility there was in, the case, and notified Iftr. Swnim that 1 would accompany him, nnd did so. Tlie first case stlccted was, that of a woman whoso appearance was horrib'e, and whose eomlition wns so deplorable .thnt the, pa tients in the same rbotn wished to have her removed, andthe evidence of my o,vn sen ses justified their complaint.
